Hey Piell.

I'd like to play a Healer (Miniature's Handbook Pg. 8) who worships the dragon goddess Tamara (Draconomicon Pg. 35: goddess of life, light and mercy, actively worshipped by healers). I'm also interested in taking the Sanctified One prestige class (Complete Champion Pg. 99), but it only has sample abilities for a few gods, and doesn't include Tamara.

If I were to write up a suggested set of abilities for a Sanctified One of Tamara, would you be amenable to reviewing them and maybe permitting me to play one?

I figure I'd like to go with something fluffy for this game, so neutral good with a gold dragon wyrmling.

So now that I got you to read the thread the actual idea is only peripherally related. Lots of people are gonna think I am a heretic, a democrat, republican or some equally unsavory thing, but why not?

Martial classes work fine in heroic and for most of paragon, but why the heck does some dumb jock get to do as much damage as a dude raining meteors down on your head? I mean after a little bit you can only swing a sword so fast and so hard before magic is pretty much involved.

I think the idea was that you took demigod as a martial character and thus were more then mortal, but a +2 to Str doesn't make you Hercules.

So why not? I think the next game I run will ban the pansy martial classes so that the real rear end kickers get a chance to shine.

One of my friends played a Sorcerer who's legs were ruined with very powerful magic, so we had to cart him around and such. You know what he did do though? He nuked the poo poo out of everything we needed him to, what he didn't put in DEX and such he put in CHA and other feats to help him there. It was actually fun because he just rode in the cart and we could basically do drive bys with him, and that's pretty drat fun to kick the cart in high gear and have the ranger fire his bow while the mage hurls fire.

Also our GM gave him basically a Professor X wheelchair (magic version) later on when it became clear we would have to be fighting in a lot of towers/dungeons. (Until then the campaign had been mostly nice open air/ruins exploration fights so he got some maneuverability with the cart or a riding mule.

edit: what I'm saying is these people suck because they focus on the flaw as a disability rather then something the character can overcome and be pretty awesome doing it.

Alright...wow. I didnt think this would be so widely interperted(sp)

So I need to tone down the blatant sexuality, got it.

The dragonborn leader would be too hard pressed to be in charge and in a socialy submissive role, got it.

now, why a blatantly overthe top introcuction (flawed as it has now been shown to be) in the first place?

my group tends to make the usual jokes about gays and lesbians, even though we have 1 gay member and a man in a womans body with a collection of ...well never mind that part. They often depict anyone gay as limpwristed and speaking in enfeminate italics with Xenaesque lesbians who are two steps shy of growing a beard of their own withthe 18 in both str and con.

I wanted to show the group that the villian can be gay and evil and dominant.
The second part was to see if the fillian can be submissive and still remain a threat or if his 'look' would break the image too far away even from the high stength and inteligence. I seem to have gotten the answer to the second half.

You made me kill an idol, drat yoooooou!

quote:

You see, I've had the D&D 4E box set on my shelf for a long time. I read through it. I liked a lot of advice I found in the DM's Guide, but reading it was like walking through a maze of mirrors: it's all things I've seen before. A lot of it read like Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering and the dozens of indie games I have on my shelf. Stuff about narrative control, stuff about player empowerment, stuff about spotlight... I mean, yeah. I've seen this before. In fact, I wrote a lot of it for the L5R and 7th Sea GM sections. And I wrote those books a decade ago. I'm glad they put it in the DMG: this may be the first time D&D players ever see it... but I don't think it will affect the way people play D&D at all. I mean, you can give all the narrative advice in the world, but if your game is still about kicking down the door, killing the ork and taking his stuff, that's exactly what players are going to do.

Which brings me to the Player's Handbook.

Reading this book and reading the DMG is a lot like reading two different roleplaying games. One of them rewards killin' poo poo and the other encourages roleplaying. Now, granted, those two goals are not mutually exclusive, but pay close attention to my wording here. One of them rewards killin' poo poo and the other encourages roleplaying. The mechanics do not reward slowing down the game to have talking time.

But that isn't what I really want to say about 4E is something a bit different. 4E feels a lot like a summer movie blockbuster to me. A whole lot of flash and not a lot of substance. More than that, though, D&D 4E doesn't move game design forward at all. There isn't anything innovative or new or daring. In fact, the game itself is... what's the right word?

Oh, yeah. Bland.

An excerpt.

Bonus:

One comment asked "So have you played it" he answers:

quote:

The RPGA here in Phoenix refuses to run it. I mean, at PHX conventions, the RPGA is still running 3.5 or Pathfinder and if you ask them about 4E they give you the same look Highlander fans give you when you mention Highlander 2. You literally cannot find a game in this city.

But to answer your question, I did manage to get in some time in a game while in Los Angeles. I found a TT game and asked if I could sit in to watch and perhaps play an NPC or something. The DM looked at me funny--like my question was completely inappropriate--and said I could watch. I watched about an hour of the game and found myself completely bored to tears.

So, to answer your question, I have not played it. I've watched it played. I've tried to get into a game ever since it came out, but no success.

One of the reasons I didn't want to write any critique of the game was exactly for that reason: I have not played it and I don't think it is fair to say anything about a game until you have. But, after this weekend's observations, I feel that I've covered that qualification.

Also hey Countblanc I like your avatar.
