Im looking at getting a DR-Z in the spring, or perhaps in the winter if I can find a deal.

However there are a few things I'm unsure about.

I want a supermoto, but I also want to do some offroad. About 85% of my riding would be on pavement, but like all of Alaska, sometimes our roads suck rear end.

What all is involved in the conversion from a DR-Z S to an SM? Is it just rims/tires and front brake?

How much does the conversion parts cost?

Would it be more cost effictive to get an SM and then get some knobbies or to get a S and get some slicks?

I've been thinking about a drz for awhile and this came up on craigslist: http://worcester.craigslist.org/mcy/1851201996.html It looks pretty clean and has low miles. What type of issues do you think the bike has? I'm still waiting on a reply from the seller so I don't know if it just needs the carb cleaned or something. I've cleaned the carb on my ninja 250 and adjusted the valves so I think I'd be able to bring this bike to good working order. Are there any big red flags about this?

That bike has been sitting on it for a while, but thats a pretty killer deal on such a low mile DRZ. However you will probably have to put a bit of money into it.

Tires are prob from 1999 and garbage, check the gas tank for rust, carb will most definitely need a cleaning, new oil/filter (You should probably replace all the fluids) and new jets at that point couldn't hurt. Check the rads and crank case covers for leaks/cracks as they can be a weak point. It appears to be missing its right rad shroud and left mirror.

As for things to watch out for, there have been issues with the bolts that hold the stator in, they can vibe out and wreck your poo poo. A bit of loc-tite is a simple afternoon fix. Same issues with the front sprocket.

I always see you guys talking DRZ prices in here, so I decided to see what my area is like. This seems like a pretty solid deal, and somebody in here is always looking. It's not my bike, nor do I know the owner.

If by "low miles" he means a couple thousand then thats a pretty good deal.

I see a nice yosh pipe there, wonder what else he means by engine upgrades.

Edit: if anything you can just return it to stock and sell the after-market parts for a few hundred

Looking to buy some new gear that I can't afford.

1. Helmet. Looking for a more sumo orientated helmet. This one seems to be a good cheap alternative to the $400+ ones and comes in a nice orange that will match my bike. Apparently they run pretty small.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/6/6/24806/ITEM/AFX-FX-37-DS-Multi-Helmet.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

I have this helmet (in flat black) and love it, however it has its downsides.

The small diamond shaped vent on the jaw whistles when you turn your head, none of the vents close and thus its pretty loud with wind noise inside. Also the liner isn't removable.

But its drat comfy and looks great.

As long as you maintain front wheel traction and stay on the gas you should be fine sliding around like that.

Wheels, Tires (Recommend Contiforce SM for pure pavement or Avon Distanzia for on/off), Front Brake Rotor, SM speedo unit if you want it to be accurate, Kickstand (It should be drat near vertical with the S stand on SM wheels, I've seen people heat and bend a stock S one.) and maybe a rear sprocket depending on how the S is currently geared. SM comes stock with a slightly longer swing-arm too, but that shouldn't matter much.

DR-Z 400SM Despite the many years since there has been no significant improvement, but even by today's standards, DRZ-400SM is still a good car.

I love my car.

I guess this is sort of a general motorcycle question, but anyway:

I'm facing the probability of not having a winter storage location for my bike this year and having to keep it outside all winter. I can buy any number of tarps and covers and such, but is there anything I should REALLY look for? I'm in an apartment, so a shed is out of the question. The bike is a DRZ400SM if that makes any difference.

You got a living room right?

2nd floor apt.

But I guess if you really have to keep it outside, Sta-Bil in a full tank of gas, battery hooked up to tender, GOOD waterproof cover, raise it off the ground so tires are off, and maybe some some sort of antifreeze in the radiator, replace with proper coolant come spring. I actually have no idea what kind of coolant is in there stock.

Also keep in mind that the DRZ-S has a seat height of 36.8in while the DRZ-SM is only 35in. I have no problem flat footing both feet on my SM and I only got about a 31in inseam.

The only thing that's going to be different from a regular 4-stroke dirtbike is the electronics. Headlight, blinkers, taillight, spedo. Only an issue if you have to debug and chase down some electrical issue, it's still stupidly simple.

edit: In fact the DRZ would probably be easier than your run of the mill derpbike, since there is such a HUUUUGE weath of information on the net about the DRZ.

If you find some good ones let me know, I'm not sure where to even look. Lots of sites want a lot of money for what ends up being some stickers. :(

Yeah I haven't had very much luck either. The few actual kits I can find are either the wrong color (bike and gear are black/red) or they are cheesy/ugly as gently caress.

I'll def. post something here if I do find it though.

Does anyone really use those collar braces? I know I'd want to if I ever did track days, though I guess it'd look pretty silly.
You mean a Leatt brace? They keep your helmet from giving you killer (literally) whiplash in a crash.
It's mainly a motocross thing but I've seen a few sumo riders wear em. I don't think they're silly, no sillier than a helmet or knee braces. Just a matter of comfort, I've even started seeing jackets on the market that have shoulders/collar shaped to fit the brace.

Just got a sweet tax return so I'm gonna pick up some fresh tires for my DRZ. I currently have distanzias on there that are not bad , but was unimpressed with them off road, though they're nice on gravel roads. I want to try some real SuMo tires this time around and I cant decide on either the continental contiforce SM or the new Conti Attack SM tires. I know the contiforce have been recommended here on many occasions but do any of you guys have the attacks and how do you like them over the forces?

Well I finally broke another spoke on my 400SM, and my rear is worn to cords so it's parked until its fixed. Never re-laced an SM wheel before, is this something I can accomplish in my garage or is there some specific tools and equipment to do it properly?

Found the stock part # for the rear spokes, Unless someone knows of a better aftermarket spoke kid.
