There was a really popular website with sexual AD&D stuff from back in the day, including the famous Bigsy's Bitch Slap. Sounds completely different though.

I wonder if the website was an electronic version of the actual book. I don't think there would be a Bigby's Bitch Slap in the book I saw though, because the book seemed to take itself pretty seriously. I think it had a similar appearance to all those paperback "Complete" series of books. (Complete Fighter's handbook, complete bard, etc..)

Hmmm... 1996 would be about the right year and the content looks familiar. This could be it. I wish it had pictures, because then I would recognize it for sure.

Steve brings something to the frontpage that only Livestock ever really otherwise attempts, and that's genuine upbeat enthusiasm. Steve knows that it is OK to love something that is ridiculous, and he embraces the stupid wholeheartedly. With the regular tone of SA articles being sarcastic, negative, and mocking, his blind optimism honestly feels fresh every time.

Basically steve is pretty great

That's the only free guide. It was text before it was ever a website. There was only one that was very popular and that was it. Anything else cost money, so I guess we're talking about different things. I'm sure there's been plenty of Adult DnD products.

Yeah, the article struck a chord with me because he really reminds me of myself. I've ardently defended AD&D against all naysayers since Wizards took over the reigns of the franchise and I still run 2nd edition at my table to this day.

It reminds me of arguments I've had, defending "seemingly" stupid rules like when my friend said that it's ridiculous that a barbarian takes 6,000 exp to get to level 2, more than twice that of most other classes and I go into a long-winded explanation of how barbarians are wild and unruly by nature and can't go into formal schooling like other classes do. (if you don't pay to train in between levels it costs double exp to level up hence the ridiculous exp cost)

These updates were great. I think the Morkoth was my favorite discussion piece.

You guys should do an update on the absolutely ridiculous magic spells old D&D had, like spells that had no function except for countering other, specific spells, or spells that simultaneously disintegrated, petrified, poisoned, plane shifted, and deranged you if you walked through them.

I think Zack already did a one man commentary of this, or something similar. It must have been many years ago, but I distinictly remember some tidbits such as "all elves are bisexual" and spells that damage creatures when they have an orgasm.

Anyway, both of these articles were some of the best I've read in months. I've never been able to convince my friends to play DnD, but I bet they would be more willing if they saw how chill and ridiculous the first addition was. Seems like people took it alot less seriously back then.

Which edition were those "flumph" guys added? They are like big hovering saucer things with eye-stalks. I saw a picture of them once and thought they were just wonderful :3:

The Flumph was from the Fiend Folio in 1980 or 1981. Almost all the monsters from that book are beyond ridiculous.

Tomb of Horrors isn't just killing players. It is killing players completely out of spite, and then killing their companions because, since the first player died, the other ones can't get out.

It also takes the singular route of making virtually all the party's skills and most of the game's classes entirely useless, relying instead on puzzles with no clear solution or even a clear initial question, which results in decisions rooted in accident.

Back in high school I played a lot of AD&D 2nd edition with bits of older books mixed in, so this was a nice little nostalgic look at how loving ridiculous some of it got. The best part is that even when they hired actual artists, it still came off as ridiculous and goofy, albeit in a different way.

I haven't played DnD for almost 20 years. I first played it back when it was called "Chainmail". We were all excited when the DnD basic set came out, crappily-cast dice and all. I got all the books as they came out. "Deities and Demigods" was a bit of a disappointment for us. We always referred to the book as "Gods and Clods". It was nearly as bad as "Monster Manual 2" with things like the Pillsbury Doughboy...

Or in the case of Jeff Easley who did the art on the cover of the 1st ed. Monster Manual just got really pretty good and continued doing cool covers, especially for 2nd edition.

There's something dangerously insane about a bare-breasted lobster-headed woman who hates humans. Still, I imagine the creation process went something like:

Guy #1: Hey, check it out, I drew a chick with a lobster head.
Guy #2: Did you put tits on it?
Guy #1: No.
Guy #2: Put tits on it.

Zach and Steve descend into the Tomb of Horrors in this delightful new update.

I count myself lucky for not getting into tabletop gaming until well after this sort of crap had long since run its course. This is Gygax at his finest, folks.

One thing I always wondered about was why they named them demi-liches, though. Were they going for like a demi-god sort of thing without realizing it just meant half-lich?

I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave, like this. Can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?
I think it was just another way to gently caress with the players - make them think it's less powerful than a regular lich.

Does the module actually tell you he's a demilich from the start? I heard tales that the introduction just tells you he's a lich, then the final `gently caress you' in the adventure is discovering that he's an entirely new type of undead who's just killed you to death.

(Loved the article, by the way)

The only thing I'm sad about is that you don't delve too far into the "Puzzles with no instructions" parts of the adventure. All the different lever puzzles or teleporter puzzles or arch puzzles which you might not even know are a puzzle, and no indicator that any particular action has a specific effect.

Otherwise good job navigating the tomb of horrors. My gaming group sent two party members into the mouth.

So when you die in DnD, that is it? You just have to scrap the character you have been working on? god drat that is harsh. What if your character dies while playing with one group of people, can you use that character if you play with a different group? Or will that ruin your DnD cred?

I know that in 3.5, there are spells that can bring you back from the dead (usually at some amount of XP cost to you and the caster), but they're very high-level and have a lot of prerequisites. And some DMs just ban those spells, as they feel it diminishes the stakes. So, in a lot of cases, dead is indeed dead.
