Ah, I figured out why my networking card was so bad. It turns out that Windows 7 and Linksys WMP54G don't mix well. The solution is to download the Ralink RT266x driver and use that driver instead. So far, it's actually stable.

That driver is buggy as hell too. I have the v4.1 card and the Ralink driver would hard-lock the whole OS randomly with no error messages in the event viewer or crash dumps. *Every* time I ran the Speakeasy Speed Test it would lock the whole OS when it got to the upload part of the test. Through trial and error, I discovered the Linksys netr6164.sys v2.00.03.0 driver was the only one with a modicum of stability. If I install the driver Windows Update is pushing or the newest version from Ralink the hard-locks return. Obviously YMMV.

If anyone was able to grab the Win 7 Realtek HD Audio driver R2.26, would you mind throwing it up on RapidShare or something or pointing me to a working link? I've been trying to download it from Realtek for two days and keep getting "550 Failed to change directory" ftp errors and timeouts.

Yeah, I'm having issues in Win7 with the WHQL drivers, and they are about 5 revisions old so I figured updating would be a good place to start.

Windows Media Player 12's file management is pretty neutered in comparison to Vista as well. Advanced tag editor is gone and Zune playlists are not recognized among several other annoyances.

If those are NTFS drives, make sure you use the same name and password as on your old install or be prepared for some permissions nightmare.

Hit enter then type:
icacls DRIVELETTER:\ /grant YOURUSERNAME:f
Hit enter. You should see a window popup changing all of the ownership properties of the files in the drive.

Is there a way to exclude folders from showing up in the libraries? For example, my "Documents" library indexes an entire disk as does my "Music" and "Videos" libraries. Other than manually entering GB's of folders manually and not entering the sub-folders of midget porn I don't want showing up in the libraries? A work-around is zipping the files with WinRAR, but that's not very elegant.

Definitely don't just delete the user accounts. This leaves all kinds of personal data behind, and most people are using the admin account anyway.

Make sure you have the license key! Then boot off the install media, then click "Install Now". Choose "Advanced", delete the partitions until it says "Unallocated Space" and then reformat it or just hit "Next" if you aren't concerned about someone doing a forensic analysis of the drive. If you are really paranoid, download DBAN, burn it to a blank disc & write zeros to the disk before reinstalling.

Does anyone know how you terminate the install so when the new owner boots up they get the screen which asks for the user name & password, so they can just enter it themselves?

It's my understanding that if you create a partition BEFORE you do the install or if you delete the system partition after it's created during the install, then windows will put the recovery info with the regular partition and not create the system partition.

You did get an answer, albeit indirectly. You must have the 100MB partition if you are going to use Windows 7's full disk encryption Bit Locker.

My question was the converse. Why the heck SHOULDN'T you let Windows create the partition? Why are people going out of their way to outsmart the installer?

Gotchya. Apparently it installs the partition even on versions which don't support BitLocker. Since the Recovery Environment can run off the system partition, it's kind of redundant.

What's a good page file size for systems with lots of RAM? In the past I've heard 1.5-2x the amount of RAM, but that was before absurd amounts of RAM became dirt cheap. A 12-16GB page file seems like a waste of space on a system with 8GB of RAM that rarely even comes close to using that much.

The gospel is to let Windows handle it and place it on a separate disk than your system drive (not a separate partition - a separate physical drive). When Windows has a BSOD, it writes kernel memory crash dumps to the page file, so everything in RAM is written to disk. If you don't know how to troubleshoot these memory dumps, this is pretty much useless and if it happens a lot you will have huge multi-GB files wasting space somewhere.

You can turn on performance logging and fire up every app you could conceivably use simultaneously, and then adjust the size according to peak commits if you are pressed for space. If you have a smallish SSD laying around you could always just assign your pagefile to that.
