You might also check out The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward (I wasn't that impressed with it but YMMV) or At The Mountains of Madness (technically a mythos story but written in a rather different fashion than most of them.)

What's a good book on introductory music theory? Assume that I have no previous knowledge of it whatsoever. EDIT: For purposes of evaluating and appreciating music, not composing. If that makes any signficant difference.
