Also, any Internet sites, online articles, etc. are fine too if you have a good one to recommend. John Hersey's Hiroshima is exactly what you're looking for to satisfy number two. I'm surprised no one's recommended it yet, it was judged the finest piece of American journalism of the last century by NYU's Journalism program.
