If most audiophiles understood the way records are recorded they wouldn't bother with all that excess. Any decent sized city has a studio, owned by couple guys who make radio jingles, where a band you've heard of recorded a few songs while on tour. Most people who do mastering do it in their basement and they have the best equipment a couple hundred bucks an hour can afford.
