I'm applying for the courier position too. I was actually looking through this thread to see if anyone had any information about it and saw that you guys were already at it. But yeah, any info anyone has? Would a recent grad with 3.5 years of computing lab work for his university and a summer working at an office in Beijing have a shot?

Oh, great heads-up. I'm actually having that resume service in SA Mart do mine right now, should have something today or tomorrow so I'll get on that. Thanks

So, I submitted an application for the courier job about two and a half weeks ago - how long does it usually take for them to decide if you can take the exam, or whatever the next step is? It's been on "Eligible - referring to hiring official" or whatever for a while now.

Yeah, I kind of feel like I'm qualified - but barely - and if anyone has experience doing anything, then I'm up for some stiff competition.

A question about DC postings - is it worth buying a house while you're there? I mean, you'll be in and out of DC your whole career so maybe...but it seems like it'd be wasted when you're gone. Rent it out maybe? What do most people do?

So, it's barely been a month and a half since I submitted my application online, so this is going to sound really impatient - but I've been going on the time frame someone mentioned before of 4-5 months for a response and I'm working if it's ever shorter than that. Has anyone heard a response to a job there in like two months? It's for the courier position, btw.

Point taken.

...so, United's position is that Private Jones' tabby makes bigger sacrifices and takes bigger risks for its country than, let's say, an assistant RSO in Kabul? Just want to make sure I'm reading that right.

Oh hey, question. Is going IMS > FSO that much easier than trying directly to go FSO? I know the positions have been described in the thread, I couldn't recall any advice about it though. I guess what I'm asking is, if you have an IT background and can qualify for an IMS position, would you recommend it as the best path to becoming an FSO?
|
# ¿ Mar 22, 2012 15:55 |

Does it matter what certification (of those they list) that you use to qualify for the IMS position or it basically just a check-box on the application? I only ask because I'm already going for one (MCITP Server Admin 2008), but I see a lot of the others are a fair bit more involved, and I wonder if mine would be looked down upon.

Skandiaavity posted:I think they're just checkboxes. It doesn't really matter, you can get a percentage pay increase if you get it.. after you're hired (protip: if you're already in the process, you might as well wait on it). If you get the certification before you're hired, you're ineligible for the pay increase. It's either 7 or 14% your pay. Well, this is my first cert off that list, so I need to finish it before I even apply for IMS. But that's good to know about not getting anymore immediately after until I'm in. I can see a clear progression to the MCITP Enterprise admin cert, which could bring about the pay bump. If/when I really get this cert and get my application in, I'll make sure to grab one of those books for CISSP and look through it. I know it had been mentioned earlier in the thread that the technical assessment, while not hardcore, went into backups and some security stuff, which I really have no formal training in (though for some reason the IT company I work for has been having me be in charge of for the 4 months since I started there...). Thanks for the info, really.

So, I've seen it mentioned off-handedly in the thread before, but no one seemed to go into much detail. I was wondering about getting residence in States that don't have an income tax before you begin working abroad. From my research, it looks like there are seven States without an income tax: Alaska Florida Nevada South Dakota Texas Washington Wyoming I guess my first question is - is this legal? Just becoming a resident so you can then leave and avoid taxes, it sounds a little fishy. And the other question is - how do you go about becoming a resident in a short period of time? Is it just get an address in order to get a drivers license and change your voter registration, usually? I don't have a job abroad or anything, I was just curious how it all works.

Don't know if this is okay for the thread, but it seemed like a good place to ask - are there any good online Masters in Int'l Relations programs out there? Looks like a couple MPA programs which might be useful, but I don't see much IR

I haven't known what to say yet, but what happened to Vilerat has been gripping me since TCD's first post about it that day. I never met him personally, or even had any direct communication with him, but I read updates to this thread multiple times a day, and I absolutely feel like I lost a friend, even though he probably wouldn't recognize the name Barracuda Bang!. I'm so sorry this happened. That said, the outpouring of support in both the SA and Eve communities has been incredibly touching and makes me proud to be a part of what we otherwise denigrate as being some silly online-only geek hangout. I think if Vilerat were able to see the community reaction, he too would be filled with nothing but intense pride. Vilerat wont be forgotten. Goonspeed, friend.

Skandiaavity posted:send you a reply. I thought it went really well. I walked in expecting the US history and American government stuff to be a breeze and everything else to be tough, but those were the questions that tripped me up the most. Not like I had no idea, but more than once I was down to two answers and had to just pick one. For the biographical stuff was tricky. I answered them all truthfully, but sometimes when they wanted like four examples, I had no way how to fit it into 200 characters. I ended up sounding kind of generic for some, which I'm hoping isn't the opposite of what they're looking for. The essay went way better than I thought too - I thought that's what I'd stress the most. The only problem is that I tried to use all my leftover time to proofread and hit the "submit answer" button with like 3 seconds left, and it took me to the "end section" window, but before I could hit that button, it ended the test. I'm like 90% sure it registered my answer, but... edit: and thanks for the good luck, guys!

So, I recall there being something stating that an FSO can only receive a full course of a Hard or Super Hard language twice in their careers, with a possibility of a third. But is there a limit to how many times you can receive training for less difficult languages?
