Congrats, SWATJester.

I have been somewhat following this thread and I think I may register for the exam.

Do you think I should register for the Feb. exam? I am leaning towards waiting for the next one so that I can better prepare, and because whatever I end up doing for my summer internship/fellowship will likely be very useful in the hiring process.

How long do you have to wait to retake the exam if you fail?

Just take it. There's little that can really be done to prepare — it's not like the GRE, GMAT or other standardized tests as much of it is things that should be common knowledge and the variety of questions is pretty wide. Plus there's no guarantee you'd get asked to do the Personal Narratives afterwards, so all you're doing if you're interested is wasting time. Plus, there's no better preparation for next time than having done it once.

As well, the hiring process sounds incredibly drawn out. What's the worst that could happen? Having to make a decision after getting through the exam, PNQs, and Oral Assessment? Better to have the decision than "what could have been."

I found the answer to my own question, per State "the test may be taken only once per eleven-month period". The main reason I'm considering waiting is that I am in my first year at an MBA program. I think if I take the exam in the summer or at the beginning of my second year I will have a higher chance of passing the PNQ and OA if I advance to those sections. Also the OA for the Feb dates is "Summer 2011" and I may be overseas depending on what summer internship I get.

Wait, do the IT mafia dislike ipads? I was going to take my ipad to my summer internship rather than my laptop.

Tyro

Gotcha. I wasn't planning on using either for work stuff obviously, but was hoping to at least have them in the office for mp3s or to use on lunch break, etc. I know some people I can ask.

iPads violate FISMA. You will never be permitted to place government data on it. They do not have any sort of NIST approved encryption, and they are an untested piece of network hardware that requires a piece of software that will never be seen on OpenNet due to its numerous security issues (iTunes).

USAID is using them in direct violation of the law.

Sounds reasonable. Just so we're clear, I specified in my next post that I didn't intend to use it for work things, but for personal stuff.

I would also be interested in a DC-area FS-goon-meet.

Can't believe I have less than a month before the FSOT. Haven't had much time to prep. Anyone have any good recommendation for biographies or documentaries on Netflix Instant Watch? Might be a good way to take study breaks, rather than watching crappy TV.

pamchenko - Would a (paid) internship in DC in Spring in a field that I am very, very interested in be worth it if it means either taking a lot of summer classes or postponing my graduation a semester?

I already delayed one year to do extra research/study abroad/transfer to university from CC. I just want to build more connections at my university so I can have my research advisor set up for senior year. Unfortunately I go to school in Boston, not DC. But this opportunity seems so tempting, do you feel your internship was worth it?

e: I realize this is horribly subjective and it's only a choice I can make. But do you feel like you gained skills that would be useful in your career? Was the work stimulating? Do employers seem impressed? etc.

Did you get a SCEP slot? Congrats. The bureau I want to work for unfortunately doesn't have any SCEP slots open at the moment. I was a summer intern (unpaid) this summer so I can't speak to the resume-enhancment aspect yet, I'll find out soon. If you're an undergrad it might be worth it. I'm in grad school and I found the duties of my particular internship to be a little underwhelming.

Hey Greencard,

Every agency has their own suitability requirements in addition to clearance requirements. But you won't know unless you apply. For less serious offenses, time is seen as a healing factor.

This site has some clearance adjudication appeal decisions that might help you get a sense of what they're looking for.

Thanks for the advice Dameius and nm. Are there any issues with using stories for the PNQs that you also may want to use for the OA? (ie do the OA guys have your PNQs at hand or are they totally separate processes?)

Tyro

Yeah I have a feeling I screwed the pooch on the PNQs. Despite being warned in this very thread I waited too long to start them. They're not nearly polished enough.

Pretty sure the letter we got that said we passed the written exam said mid-January.

Which also means you can have separate candidacies in separate cones.

I also understand you can have one generalist and one specialist candidacy at the same time but if you accept a COE and/or go on a register, the other is terminated, is that correct?

Awesome, thank you. I went through and read some of the approvals/denials and got a bit nervous, but I know that I'm just overthinking this. That said, anyone here have experience with internships? I'm sure they vary widely between the bureaus, but I don't have a solid grasp on how federal jobs work and how useful internships are for future applications.

Internships vary like crazy depending on not only bureau but what office you end up in.

Tyro
Nov 10, 2009
Really sorry that you guys didn't make it! QEP is so fuckin' weird. I was prepped for the worst after seeing the responses here because I feel several of you are more qualified/as qualified as me, but I made it through. Hopefully more goons will also. This was a Hail Mary for me, I guess I need to start prepping for the OA now.

Tyro

It's not true for entry and mid level jobs either. I'm in grad school and to a person every single classmate of mine has been horrified when I've told them the starting salary range I'm looking at for federal jobs.

Tyro
Nov 10, 2009
Eonwe - the QEP and the FSOA are the two biggest weeding out phases. This last phase that I went through, IIRC 27k took the FSOT, don't know how many passed, of those 9k were eliminated in QEP, and the pass rate at FSOA is historically around 30%.
