Wow, two of the OA passers from my group are on the registers already, and each in the top 10 for their cones. Waiting anxiously for that drat letter...

I was told just yesterday by HR that you can be on both registers until you accept an offer. As soon as you accept a real offer (not a COE) your other candidacy is terminated. That's the situation I'm going to be in as soon as my clearances are done...

Nice. Bern is a quirky and kind of quiet city, and holy hell is CH expensive, but I'd definitely live there if given the chance. The trains are amazing.

Freaking medical Office wasting my time. Have a current class one, they want me to redo everything for DS when I just need the supplemental. The bureaucracy of this process is annoying.

:stare: drat. Good score.

Good luck! I've been waiting on Security for about 3 months now.

edit to add: Please don't be my cone! (no offense)

Ouch, one of the folks I OA'ed with got dinged by the FRP about 6 weeks after their clearance was adjudicated. I realize they are different standards but I imagine that is that relatively rare, to make it through the security clearance but to then be found unsuitable?

That sucks, though. Is there an appeal process or is it actually a final determination?

Yeah he was understandably vague about the reason but said they did tell him why they made that decision. Apparently there is an appeals process but if the appeal is denied there are no further steps to take.

I actually do have a question. What do generalists do when they are posted in DC? Work alongside GS employees? I'm mostly interested in Consular, since that's my cone. I feel like I have a decent handle on the overseas work, but when it comes to US posts, I have no idea.

Anyone have experience with the Skill Code Change process? Specifically going from generalist to specialist. From what I've found online I know it is theoretically possible but it seems like meeting the requirements (something like 30 months out of the past 6 years in a job that fits the desired skill code) would be difficult to meet, and actually getting a conversion would depend on factors completely outside your control.

Do QEP questions/ topics stay pretty static, year to year? Since I got dinged on that this time around, I'm wondering if I should rewrite the ones I submitted this summer to make a few of them suck a bit less for the next time around or would that be a waste of time?

It would probably not be a waste of time. If nothing else it will get you reacquainted with how freaking short they have to be and working on writing concisely. And if it turns out you can re-use or slightly modify some of your old answers, it will give you more time for the others.

IMO yeah, you won't get on in time for a Jan class unless you already have an active State clearance, they'll *hopefully* be starting to send out the invites around the time you interview.

I'm assuming it's a standard board procedure? ie: sound confident even if you're not, answer questions quickly but intelligently, and stick to any judgement calls you make even if found to be incorrect?

No offense but that's just the subset dumb enough to bitch about it on the internet. I failed my first DS BEX, along with 3 of my best friends who were very well qualified. Most of the DS agents I know had to apply multiple times to make it in. It's competitive as hell. I'm not saying this to dishearten you but to let you know to bring your A game.

Seriously, I did take the FSOT to hedge my bets on DS, and it looks like I very well may end up a generalist instead. Go for it.

NFO is a pretty awesome job, and hard to get, I don't think that's a negative at all. Just focus on the responsibilities you've had.

How long do the PNs generally need to be? I have a problem sometimes of being overly concise. I like to get right to the point and maybe don't expand as much as I should. The one draft answer that I finished last night is around 950 characters. Will that be a problem? Also, Diplomaticus, you should be expecting a draft from me sometime this weekend. (thanks again!)

Mine were all just a hair under the character limit and it took me some serious editing to get them that way, I'm pretty verbose. I think you are fine around 950.
