You'll want to check out the Foreign Service Specialist listings (scroll down to information technology): https://careers.state.gov/work/foreign-service/specialist/career-tracks/ I think some/one of the posters in the thread worrks in that role.

Yorkshire Pudding posted:Second, I took the FSOT last June and passed, but with a really low score and I was still in grad school so I decided not to move forward. I just never turned in my Personal Narratives (or whatever stage two is), so I didn't know if I would be disqualified for some specific amount of time for that. If you don't do the PN, there's no penalty, it's just the standard "one application per 12 months" waiting period.

Any of y'all use the State Dept. Federal Credit Union? Applied for an account since they accept Americans without a US address but have read mixed reviews. I guess worst case I'll just use their cash back credit card and put in a savings account, but maybe they're actually OK?

Thanks for the feedback, most of my banking is done with a foreign bank, so I just need something for the occasional bill pay and I think the SDFCU should be fine then. I also heard good things about USAA but I'm just an American emigrant, not in the FS or military, so my options are limited.

Xelkelvos posted:They didn't provide a breakdown which is why I'm confused as to how someone immediate figured it was the oral portion that I failed at. Because the minimum cutoff for the written test is like 150 or 160 or something and the cutoff for the oral is 5.25 and there aren't any other tests.

Y'all know anything about the availability of the next generation passports? I read that some diplomats had already been getting the new ones, but I assume it won't be till next year that the fees increase and you can expect to receive one if applying for a renewal? https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/next-generation-passport.html

Awkward Davies posted:I’m curious if any of the IMS goons in this thread would be able to comment on the level of expertise needed. Obviously UX design is not IT, I’ve never done an IT job. However, I have a fairly sophisticated understanding of digital stuff due to a decade of working around it, and designing for it. I know how to find things out I don’t know. I have a masters degree (MPS) with the word “telecommunications” in it (okay, it’s from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU which is really an art degree). I have a BA in International Relations because I was interested plus my brother’s influence. It has to be pretty specific IT education/experience: State Dept https://careers.state.gov/career-pa...pecialist-quiz/ posted:Approved IT degrees include the fields of Information Management, Telecommunications Management, Computer Information Systems, Networking, Data Processing, Computer Sciences, Mathematics or other related computer networking fields.
