They'll find out about during the background investigation whether or not you put it on your resume. I can't imagine they'd check for the purposes of reviewing your resume though.

The Mantis posted:2) Along similar -- yet more personal -- lines, I'm still trying to understand how most FSOs spend their pay. With housing provided and logistical limits on personal acquisitions, does most of it just go to travel and Thai shemales? And from this monstrosity I'm assuming you're assigned a "class" along with your GS rank? Is this number wholly or just partially based upon the number of black tie high-stakes poker matches you win? We spend money on the same things everyone else does minus utilities and housing. The Foreign Service has its own own pay scale which is what you linked to there's no GS involved.

Fun thing you can do in this job: Be a terrorist in a role playing exercise with the local SWAT team. One second they're nowhere around, and the next your face down on the ground.

Jobs like that are usually advertised locally or within the Embassy community. They're either looking for locals or spouses of Americans who work at the embassy. If you want to move there and get the right visa to live and work there you might qualify. There are a non-trivial number of Americans who work as FSNs. You're on your own in terms of housing and Diplomatic immunity and all that other fun stuff though.

I got out of the party since he had GITM concurrent with a SecState visit and I expected to be on call for both. Hillary ended up coming early than we thought so I mostly just chilled. I enjoyed the ones I've been to though, got to eat drink, and talk to who I wanted. The job you want is puller. You just hang out until the end and then tell the stragglers to beat it (politely of course but it's still a pretty good gig).

GregNorc posted:Any IT specialists care to share? Read through the first 10 or so pages, everything seems geared towards the diplomatic side... I know a lot about international relations, but am I tested on that or my IT skills? More and more systems work is being centralized in DC so computer janitor isn't too far from the truth. But you have an opportunity to be a mail, phone, radio, and diplomatic pouch janitor too. There are special challenges that come up because of security concerns and just being overseas, but it's rarely deeply technical. There's plenty of room for advancement, all way into Senior Foreign Service. It's all managment track though as you might imagine. Assignments are for 2 or 3 years. You extend or curtail but they're all limited to a length of time.

You're given some time to write a short essay on some vaugely IT related topic just so they get an idea of your ability to string words together. Then you're interviewed by a two person team. One is a generalist who conducts a more or less generic job interview with some basic questions about government and conducting yourself overseas thrown in. The other is an IMer who asks some basic IT questions.

Nobody cares about your personal internet history. But don't try to pull crap at work if you get hired. edit: There's no retesting but we do use an "up or out" system. If you sit around too long without getting promoted you will be booted out. I do know of one person who was fired but I can't really comment on it. I've had to deal with bribery so I can't really speak to that. Any blackmail or any other surveillance must be reported to the RSO. You can have overlap with the person your replacing. Posts usually like to do that whenever they can since it's an opportunity for that person to show you around and they get an extra pair of hands.
