What about housing? (either the housing stipend with dependents, or the housing complex owned by state?)

Also at what time is this calculated? I could simply tell them "my lease is up next month" (which it is) "and so until my clearances go through I'm going to move back to Florida". Right? Note - and then actually do it, I'm not talking about defrauding anyone here.

Housing is part of Per Diem. There's no State owned housing in DC unless you can convince Hillary to let you crash on her couch.

2) Along similar -- yet more personal -- lines, I'm still trying to understand how most FSOs spend their pay. And from this monstrosity I'm assuming you're assigned a "class" along with your GS rank? Is this number wholly or just partially based upon the number of black tie high-stakes poker matches you win?

We spend money on the same things everyone else does minus utilities and housing. The Foreign Service has its own own pay scale which is what you linked to there's no GS involved.

Are jobs like this all available on the .gov job site or do embassies advertise jobs externally from the system?

Jobs like that are usually advertised locally or within the Embassy community. They're either looking for locals or spouses of Americans who work at the embassy. If you want to move there and get the right visa to live and work there you might qualify. There are a non-trivial number of Americans who work as FSNs. You're on your own in terms of housing and Diplomatic immunity and all that other fun stuff though.

Any IT specialists care to share? Read through the first 10 or so pages, everything seems geared towards the diplomatic side... I know a lot about international relations, but am I tested on that or my IT skills?

Would I get to do real work, or would I be a glorified computer janitor(that's fine starting out considering I'd be able to see cool new places, but around 30 or so that will get old fast)

Is there room for advancement?

Do you continually move throughout your career, or do you eventually settle on a single post after 3-4 tours

More and more systems work is being centralized in DC so computer janitor isn't too far from the truth. But you have an opportunity to be a mail, phone, radio, and diplomatic pouch janitor too. There are special challenges that come up because of security concerns and just being overseas, but it's rarely deeply technical.

There's plenty of room for advancement, all way into Senior Foreign Service. It's all managment track though as you might imagine.

Assignments are for 2 or 3 years. You extend or curtail but they're all limited to a length of time.

Like BoF said it's a different process. You're given some time to write a short essay on some vaugely IT related topic just so they get an idea of your ability to string words together. Then you're interviewed by a two person team. One is a generalist who conducts a more or less generic job interview with some basic questions about government and conducting yourself overseas thrown in. The other is an IMer who asks some basic IT questions.

Nobody cares about your personal internet history. But don't try to pull crap at work if you get hired.

edit: There's no retesting but we do use an "up or out" system. If you sit around too long without getting promoted you will be booted out. I do know of one person who was fired but I can't really comment on it.

I've had to deal with bribery so I can't really speak to that. Any blackmail or any other surveillance must be reported to the RSO.
