I had a very good time in Barbados. You've kind of got to find your own fun once you get past the usual tourist stuff but you can do it if you try. Island Time is a real thing too so you have to be patient when your trying to get things done. Sometimes people stop in the middle of the road to chat with their friends going in the other direction.

We had a great group of people while I was there but I've been told it's had periodic morale issues before and since due to poor management, not sure what it's like now.

I never went to Trinidad but we had a few visitors come up our way and they were all pretty unhappy, it's just very poor and boring.

I'm an IMS candidate, passed my OA back in March with a good score and am currently waiting on the security clearance. I'm extremely excited to be joining the FS (hopefully sometime soon!) and since I feel like there's a good mix of FSSs and FSOs on this board wanted to see what everyone thoughts were on the current state of the Generalist/Specialist divide in the FS.

I've read some pretty negative articles (such as: http://www.bguldin.com/class_divide_in_the_foreign_service.html ) that do not paint a pleasant picture of how Specialists are treated in the FS; but this article, and others similar to it, are quite dated and I'm curious if anything has changed.

I fully understand that Specialist career tracks are support roles. And that's my goal, to support the needs of FSOs/FSSs/and FS as a whole. And I understand that my masters degree and 15 years experience, while an asset to the service, doesn't change the fact that I'm entering in an entry-level position -- all of this I'm OK with.

What I would like to know is if there continues to be a us vs them mentality? Do Specialists and Generalists socialize outside of work? Do Specialists continue to be treated as "second-class citizens" as the linked article states?

Thanks in advance to anyone that responds!

In 10 years I really haven't seen this. I can think of one individual who gave me that attitude and they were generally unpleasant anyway. Very few people really care about the distinction in my experience.

This would certainly be a unique post. I know people who probably jump at this, but wow that is really cold and isolated.

I finally got my FAN account working so can spend the pandemic looking at emails from the week in 2017 when people used FAN.

I kid, they've actually improved it quite a bit. Google Meets is probably going to turn out to be very useful in coming days.

Okay nerds, question for you. There's a debate raging in my section, and our IRM team is not interested in answering it.

Non-standard Latin characters in SMART - okay or not okay? Our received wisdom is that you can't use something like this - Yüksek Askeri Şura - in a cable, because the ü and Ş would cause some computers (perhaps or exclusively in other agencies?) to melt down in incomprehension. However, I see tons of cables coming out of like Slovenia or Poland that use non-standard Latin characters.

While it's not essential, I do prefer using the correct spelling of names in Turkish, including extra diacriticals, in official reporting. All of us have keyboards at home and in the office set up to handle this. What is the official take on whether this breaks the system or not?

Nah, they come out as punctuation or just weird stuff. You can put them in attachments though.

Just got the email that I passed the QEP for an IMS role; time for more waiting!

A quick question for any IMS goons: I’ve been reading some grumbling online (more than usual, anyway) about the IMS role in particular. Is there anything to that, or is it more a case of people whining because they were slighted once/ signed up for a job that they didn’t want to do?

I like it. But like any job, there are plenty of things to grumble about. If you've noticed an uptick in grumbling in the next month or so it might be related to some changes in how the Skill Code works. It wasn't really rolled out in the best way, and the communication hasn't been as clear as it could be. Won't really affect anybody coming in after January though. Sorry to vague post but I'm not completely up to speed on it.
