Speaking of the Defiler video on the previous page, here's a video of the vocalist in the studio - pretty insane that he's only 17 and has a voice like that:

Check out this hilarious track-by-track analysis of Emmure's new album by Frankie: http://www.altpress.com/features/entry/track_by_track_emmure/

quote:

My Name Is Thanos
Consider this song an introduction to things to come. For the record, my name is Thanos Reignz, although you may know me as Frankie Palmeri. My true self is beginning to emerge, and this song is merely a preview of the story I am preparing to share with the world.

Is he seriously for real?

I've found that I enjoy a lot of these "scene" or "post-hardcore" bands nowadays, somewhat to my surprise. Rise Records has a lot of good artists even though many of them are very similar. Chief among the awesome tapes is the new full-length from Memphis May Fire, check it out

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAzsp73UMXw

God, this band went downhill fast after their debut album "Sleepwalking" - instead of keeping with the Southern-inspired riffs, they just went generic with their newest record because they wanted it to be "f'ing br00tal".

I'm of the opposite opinion. I think the southern rock poo poo is super overdone and generic and I wish it would die (though I guess it's starting to fade away now). I like the new sound a lot better, I don't think they went overboard with the heaviness or whatever. I especially like the part that starts around the minute mark in that song, really cool "wall of sound" type thing with subtle nuances that leads into a really nicely structured breakdown part. I guess I just liked a lot of the subtle elements on the album that seem to set it apart.

Personally I found the first album good in spite of the southern riffs, not because of them

Which other metalcore-ish bands do you think use Southern riffs? Personally I can only come up with Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, The Holly Springs Disaster and Dead and Divine.

I fuckin' love He Is Legend, probably my favorite band. And nope, I agree, Suck Out the Poison is their best record. I feel that I Am Hollywood is their most catchy album, but both Suck Out the Poison and It Hates You are more gratifying in the long run. Also, "Everyone I Know Has Fangs" is a monster of a track - goddamn Schuylar Croom has an amazing voice.

I just feel like the songs on Suck Out The Poison have a lot more complexity to them than on the other two albums. Also, I wish I could have A. caught a show from them when they were still a band and B. caught a show when Schuylar was doing vocals for Maylene

Well, they actually played a show in their hometown a few months ago, so there might be hope yet. From what I hear, the band just got burned out from being attached to a scene they felt no connection to, being on lovely tours with lovely bands and generally getting screwed over by the labels. Hopefully, they just need time to distance themselves from that whole experience so they can get together and write some new material. They are too talented not to.

Also, I saw Maylene with Schuylar here in Copenhagen, so nyah :P !

Okay, I'm looking for some metalcore that features more "bouncing" riffs instead of chugga-chugga - I think this riff by Dead and Divine explains what I want (kicks in at 0:33):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgFdyGXmbAg

I'm just kind of sick of most of these new bands that just try to be as heavy as possible instead of using some dynamics - if I want heavy, I'll just listen to Wormwood by The Acacia Strain.

I can appreciate this sentiment, but i never understood why people say "if I wanted x, I'd listen to [band]!" Can't you listen to more than one?

this song is pretty good. "I love you so much, I'm contemplating removing your head!" You should try the newest Memphis May Fire tape. The chorus in your song reminds me pretty strongly of them. Also thanks, I am gonna have to check this band out.

edit: also check out the new tape from Of Mice and Men.

Hah, yeah, I get what you're saying - what I meant is stuff like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69I_rNX3ZdQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQWW6JdPjoc

I get that on the surface the chugging riffs could kinda sound like The Acacia Strain (and trust me, I like other heavy bands besides them), but yeah, I'm looking for something with some more dynamic and bouncing riffs, kinda like what Maylene and the Sons of Disaster did with their first album.

As for your recommendations: I love Memphis May Fire's first full-length, but man, their newest album is exactly the sort of metalcore I'm sick of. Also not a big fan of Of Mice and Men's vocalist.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm glad you dig Dead and Divine :) been listening to The Machines We Are and Antimacy a lot lately, and they both rule.

Can any of you guys help me find my "ideal" band? I've been listening to whatever-core for a couple of years, and as much as I love the genre, I haven't exactly found a band that fit within these certain boundaries:

In short, I'm looking for some group that is equal parts super harmonic with lots of interesting melodies and cool harmonies, but also have ridiculously heavy breakdowns. In terms of the former part, bands that come to mind that fit that bill are groups like Counterparts, or Elitist. Lots of minor ninths and stuff.

As for the second part, I like stupidly heavy breakdowns, like Despised Icon, The Ghost Inside, and what not.

I think the closest I've found is probably An American Shootout, a loving awesome band that not enough people know about :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rKQ2NrIdCE

Unfortunately it wants me leaving a little more on the harmonic aspects and the production quality is pretty poor. August Burns Red also comes close to fitting that bill, but they're too mathy. Counterparts doesn't have enough breakdowns. I love all these bands, but I'm trying to find the one that hits all those points. Anyone have any clues?

Gideon, maybe?

I know what you mean - I get if you don't want to drink and that's perfectly fine with me, but I don't understand having such excessively vocal opinions that you need to wear clothes stating it. At the same time, straight edge bands are often so amazingly ignorant that they cross over from being annoying and back to awesome, plus their songs always go hard.
