Are you local to salt lake? I get to stop around there for a night next month and I've seen mention that the bugs get completely unbearable late May. But a sunset reflection or patterns in the salt flats sounds like fun to shoot.

Yeah, I got a face net. I'll evaluate as I show up and adjust as needed but thanks for confirming the reports. Unfortunately I only got two nights on the west side of the state, one headed west and one coming back east. I'm thinking I'll camp in the hills just west of the bonneville flats and try for a sunset on the salt (or on the shore if there happens to be water that night). On the way back I'm camping at crystal peak and then a final night at goblin valley (which I didn't think I'd like but I am hooked after I got to spend a couple hours there last fall). Was really hard to narrow it down to that list, you're absolutely right that Utah has an insane amount of sights. And I'm not even local, that's just stuff I've been able to find online.

I did get to camp the moon overlook once, the whole Hanksville area is magic. A fun snapshot of another notable feature there: I chose goblin valley this time because it's closer to the interstate and I only had a brief stop previously. I think I have a point saved near those coordinates as well but I don't have a drone. I'll catch it on a future visit. I think I want to spend a week around Hanksville at some point and really saturate myself in it.

I've been taking a wilderness course with a dude that's done Denali, he said he had a fall on the ascent where he landed on his back and couldn't flip over to self arrest. Only a snow anchor stopped him from a rapid unplanned glissade a couple thousand feet back the way he came. Main effect was to convince me I don't need to summit anything in winter. I'll be fine avoiding avalanche terrain in wide valleys.

Appreciate it, thanks. I've been shooting absolute dogshit since Christmas so it was nice to get a win.

I was extremely worried I missed it, that tree was only illuminated for about ten seconds. I took a couple quick shots and then started finessing but it was gone. Fortunately cropping and straightening is something technology invented. The yessss didn't happen until I got home.

That light is hell yeah. And the angles it makes with the stairs.

Man how the gently caress do you even process an aurora photo. The colors are all over the place and it's very hard to avoid an insanely saturated mess. And if you don't try all the detail and structure gets lost. Unless it's situational, maybe the aurora near me just wasn't that great? Skies not dark enough?

Editing concerns aside, I did the thing. Pawnee Buttes by Seth Graham, on Flickr Pawnee Buttes by Seth Graham, on Flickr I still feel like it's too purple but I cooled the white balance/tint and saturation as much as I could before it started swinging too far. So maybe that purple was actually there? I sure as poo poo couldn't see it.. but even the foreground came out purple before I started making adjustments. Really confusing edit.

Man I am such a copycat. I am hoping to do that exact scene in the fourth one in three weeks. Was hoping for some water reflections but that seems unlikely.

Well it's absolutely happening especially if you can guarantee blue hour colors like you got. It's just proving I am not doing anything original. And yeah the idea is to snap pictures at the raceway and sneak some sleep in the BLM hills just to the west.
