Alaska has the most amazing summers I've ever experienced. It may only last a few months, but the weather is almost always perfect. In August it starts getting more gloomy and rainy, and by late September stuff is freezing over.

But May through July? No better time to be there.

How are the campgrounds in Alaska in the summer? I've heard they aren't as well maintained as ones in Yukon. One of the guys I work with is from Whitehorse and has dragged me up north on camping adventures the past 2 summers. Went up north of the Arctic Circle this summer, and while it's cool to go up there, I was suggesting going into Alaska next summer as northern Yukon is a wee bit desolate.

Ending derail with a couple pics from this year's trip

Didn't go to Iceland this summer, cause my gf wanted sun.

You should have told her that Iceland is so close to the Arctic Circle that you'd be getting almost 24 hours of sunlight in the summer.

Oh hey, glad it worked out for you. I hope it wasn't too terribly crowded. Did you get wild and walk along the crazy death cliff?

It was pretty crowded, actually, especially when there was a tour group nearby. I have anxiety issues when dealing with big vertical drops so I didn't do the crazy wood plank route

Where do you usually go to get something printed? I'm in Canada, which will probably change the recommendations a lot. I found a lot of internet companies who claim they will canvas that size and ship it for 150-175 bucks or so, but I have no idea who is good or what to look for, or if it's best to try to find something local and talk to them directly.

Which city? Try a McBain Camera if there's one where you live

I felt that way about Fairbanks. But then I headed south through the Alaska Range and changed my mind. My favorite part of Alaska is actually in Canada; I've never been anywhere that beats the Alaska Highway. It's a shame that you need so much time to do it, I really loved being up there:

Muncho Lake

Yukon

Alaska Range

Kluane

I've gone up to Yukon the past 2 summers and have to agree. We were on a time crunch to get to Whitehorse when driving up there, so the only time we really got to stop for pictures was when the guy driving needed a quick 15 minute nap. The Alaska Highway between Fort Nelson and Liard Hot Springs is also one of the best driving roads in Canada.

Try going up the Dempster Highway if you ever go back to Yukon (you should, it's awesome)

Thanks, I wasn't in the country very long, the furthest I got outside of Reykjavik was Vik, which is less than 200Km away along the coast, and the furthest inland I got was Þingvellir National Park, which is about 50Km inland. That means there's still poo poo-tons of Icelandosity out there.

I tend to wear a pair of thinner Mechanix or Oakleys. They aren't great for below zero temps, but they're good enough for in the 20s or 30s. They're also still tin enough that I can operate all the dials on my camera and not have much of an issue getting filters on and off.

I've got a pair of these http://www.oakley.com/products/midweight-fleece-glove/94178-001 They're decent for warmth, wouldn't take them when it's below -20, but the shiny bits in the picture are extremely grippy

They vary in size, they're all spread out so a smaller one would not be in the same shoy as a bigger one. It was about 50/50 some doors were about 3ish feet in diameter, the big ones were about 5 1/2 feet

Yeah i saw a thing where they built an absolutely huge fake oak tree and then rebuilt it for the hobbit to be smaller and did stuff like building full gardens and leaving them to overgrow for a year to make it look lived in. A crazy amount of effort.

There were a couple big trees that I had no idea were fake until the tour guide pointed it out. I believe the one behind Bag End was fake. The big oak Party Tree was real; the site was chosen because of it and the lake. Also, despite being situated on a 1250 acre sheep farm, none of the sheep on the farm were used, they imported sheep from the UK because the breed has black faces and look older

thanks, traffic was really light but there were a fair amount of campers and I'll admit I wasn't the fastest one on the road, but that's because a rental Yaris with 84HP and 89lbs/ft of torque isn't the proper vehicle for driving up mountains.
