LuisX posted:Cross posted from a previous PAD thread. Let me know if these count as landscape. Absolutely not landscapes. And they suck. Man, first you shoot hot chicks day in and day out, add to that that you do it well, and on top of all that, you shoot some kickass landscapes. You suck.

Zygar posted:This thread rocks. Landscape photography is one of the most satisfying types of photography there is, IMO. Some of the stuff in here is absolutely incredible. The water is great, but it's too small in the shot. The contrast of the perfect smoothness with the rocks isn't done quite right here...I think it's just shoved too much into the side of the shot. Less sky, less rock, I think.

Dass Niemand posted:What I love about this picture is the texture of the stone stairs, like my hand will get scraped up by rubbing the picture or something it's great I need more or less of the asphalt surface. It has the potential to give a "leading lines" look into the picture, and give some nice contrast, but right now there's just enough in the shot to be distracting. Beautiful sky. Can you correct some of the distortion in photoshop? I actually kind of like the bending up at the edges, but I think you could correct it pretty easily, too. edit: After reading your comment on my shot, I looked at it again, and think it could use a little fill light to bring out the textures even more. You're right, it's the stronger part of the shot.

dik-dik posted:I'm not sure why f/22 would cause diffusion or softness. I'd say your best bet would be to shoot the same shot at multiple apertures and see for yourself. Shooting at f/22 gives you nearly infinite DOF, which is often times desired for landscape photography. No, you can't simply stop down infinitely and maintain sharpness. Diffraction and Photography

DJExile posted:I'm getting some good overall ideas here and wanted to ask what to look for specifically with a trip I'll be taking soon. Comedy option: Buy a canon. Real? If you cannot take a tripod, buy one when you get there. A $20 tripod that you throw away will be invaluable. If not, either pack or purchase on the other end, a bean bag support. One gallon ziplock almost filled with dry rice or beans, then inside another one gallon ziplock.

Phat_Albert posted:I'm just starting to dabble in landscapes, and am still having a hard time making rocks sexy. IT looks like, in the first, otherwise awesome photo, you overexposed the land to get the long exposure you wanted on the water. Try f/16, same time. It's a tough balance. You found a great shot...I'd suggest also using the parallel stones to as a framing device, if you see what I mean. They're just above the whirlpool. The second is exposed better, but not as fascinating a body of water.

Don't know if it would have been possible, but I'd like to see this shot from lower...I think if you could have framed that tree against that sky it would have made a more powerful image. The colors are really, really nice.

Too centered a composition. The leading lines of the tree line lead the eye not to the mountains, but to the base of the mountains. Try composing without the mountain dead center.

Anyway, yes, there's no reason to restrict yourself to Landscape = Wide, but every lens has its uses for landscapes. It's all about creative control and making a good image - using your own standards and taste. Where you gonna be? I'm in Evergreen, Co now. We just got 8 inches of snow, or so, and it's a great time to be in the rockies.
