What is the diagonal line going through the image? So distracting. Otherwise, I like this shot.

I'm headed to Iceland for two weeks by myself, pretty much entirely to take photos and enjoy nature. Below are two photos I'd consider pretty typical of my abilities at this point. I'd like to my time until I leave and then the duration of the time there improving my skills. I purchased a video course on Udemy and requested a refund two minutes in when the author of an intermediate landscape photography course claimed one of his subpar photos was almost good enough to be in Nat Geo. I'm planning on marathoning this thread, marking photo ideas for inspiration and noting any interesting discussions. Otherwise, is there anything I should be doing?

Since I'm in Iceland I decided to try and suck less at editing. Let's see if I suck more or less...

I'm wondering then why my photos look less sharp than what's generally posted in the landscape thread. I shoot around 1/100, f11, iso 100 with a Nikon D5300 and Sigma 17-50 2.8. I try to make sure I use a good focal distance to get foreground and background in focus. Perhaps they post process in Lightroom better or have better sensors?

Yes.

Before I answer this - what photos in this thread of mountains, and lakes, and such in this thread do you find interesting and why?

Alright. Here are 4 of my better photos of Iceland. I think they tell a story and I'm proud of them. Give me your worst.

How do you go about picking what feeling/idea you want to convey to what audience?

Edit: thinking on the Iceland trip - I tried and perhaps failed to capture the vast nothingness and coldness of the country.

A quarter of a way through this book and I'm feeling like I'm about off the plataeu I've been on and I'm climbing upward again.

I'm reading through a landscape photography book and I have a question - If my camera doesn't show any signs of noise at, say, 2000ISO, and I can handhold a low light landscape shot at 2000 ISO, are there any advantages to using a lower ISO with a tripod?

Yes, higher ISOs have less dynamic range, you can look for your body here and see how it'll effect your images: https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm

Woah. I lose over half the dynamic range at higher ISOs. Today I learned, thanks!

Monument Valley was my first choice and there are definitely some cool angles but all tours are booked (well maybe not all, I didn't call every single company before I gave up) and it's not a place where you can roll up and start going off on your own.

I've spent too many hours in google earth pro trying to find the perfect spot and it's hard work when you don't know the region well.

Muley Point is an amazing spot. You drive down into Valley of the Gods as well.

It was crazy windy when I went so I didn't photograph too long. This'll give you a rough idea of what it was like:

I would really love a quick behind the scenes on how you created each of these images

1) Went to check out a waterfall around 9am. There were stairs down the side of it so you could walk from top to bottom. As I was going down, I saw myself illuminated from behind and took this snapshot.

2) Same lighting/location as 1. Saw some water making mist. Light passed through various rocks above and created the parallel lines. Took a bunch of snapshots, this was my favorite.

3) 30second long exposure with a wide angle lens just after the sun set.

4) Was shooting star photos. There was a road that wrapped around the mountains. I saw that when cars rounded the corner, they'd make some interesting light situations. I shot a bunch of exposures around 3 seconds each and caught this one of the headlights going through the tree.

5) Middle of the day shot from above with a telephoto down into a valley. I liked the confusing perspective the tree made against the river below it.

Let me know if you want more detail.
