Thanks guys. It was a horrible shoot. I'm was (still am) sick and I had a 100 temp and my new flash died right as I got everything set up perfect. The only thing that kept me going was 10 Years Old, Cask Strength Laphroaig (Scotch).

The color is definitely much better. Awesome shot. This is Harold. I just met him at Walgreens while picking up a few things becasue I have a cold. He approached me and asked if I had any change. I told him if he would let me take his portrait I would give him 2 dollars. He agreed but said he needed to comb his hair first. Harlod and I chatted for a bit and I found out he is from Hobbs, New Mexico.

I love shooting kids but it can be very difficult. If you get frustrated they are going to pick up on that pretty easily and then you might as well give up at that point. Shot my nephew's birthday party on Sunday.

HPL posted:You can fix it somewhat by having a white card on the flash to provide some fill. The card should be parallel to the flash head so the flash can project up and off the ceiling, but the card will catch the light going backwards and reflect it forwards for fill. Here is a template for one I made. Fits a 580ex II. I just wrap the small end around the flash and hold it in place with a wide rubber band. I use a semi-matte paper. I think it was Epson Semi-matte proofing paper.

I have a couple of questions guys. I am going to be doing a series of nudes in the next few weeks/month. The shots will vary from abstract nudes - artistic nudes - fairly graphic (maybe even pornographic in the eyes of some). Will it be ok to post all of these in this forum? Can I post them in this thread, the PAD thread or should I keep them in the fine art thread?

Paragon8 posted:I think NSFW them and it should be okay. AtomicManiac posted:Toss a NWS tag and link them as opposed to posting them. I figured that - I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't breaking any rules by posting the more graphic images. Reichstag posted:Another day, another instant print. I am loving this stuff, however, I have run into a problem. I have no way to store them when 'in the field.' The print is particularly vulnerable to dust and smudging when it's freshly peeled, and I don't have anywhere to put it.] Pompous Rhombus posted:Yeah, I know what you mean. I was tossing them into the empty space in my bag where the camera went (so they weren't getting crushed or anything), but it's still less than ideal. My idea is to take a tupperware or some other kind of plastic box and try to find a way to stick some septums in it, so I have slots to drop the individual prints/negs in (might cannibalize some of the busted wooden film holders I have laying around for the dividers). I think individual storage is best, because they're still a little wet/gooey from the developing and I don't like how stuff sticks together if left to its own devices. I guess Ziploc bags in a tupperware would work, but it seems kind of inelegant. What are you guys doing instant prints with?

The shot was not meant to be flattering like the others. I understand what you guys are saying. She agrees with you - "I love the B&W one but sort of feel like I could be a drug addict in that one. Smudges around eyes. And you can see every pore on my skin!!" - BUT - these images are for me. I needed a model to practice a wide range of shots on.

McMadCow posted:I really liked all the shots from the first set but these just aren't doing it for me at all. Don't be sorry. They are just playful shots to help her relax before we shot some nudes. I gave her no real direction on these - just said relax and do whatever you feel like. I really appreciate the input. I'm learning - I think people are the hardest thing to photograph. DevNull posted:I agree with McMadCow. I like the first set, but not those as much. The first one of the second set has a bit of playfulness that could fun, but doesn't quite work with that picture. I was thinking something more along the lines of changing everything but the model. So have her clothed, in a different location, and different mood (happy/playful) to juxtapose that first set against. Then again, maybe I am crazy and that would be too forced and look like crap. I will be shooting her again - with clothes on.

Did you just photoshop them like that afterward or was it something you did with the lighting during the shoot? Her pupils are most likely dilated due to little or no light.

Gazmachine posted:That first picture is unfeasibly cute. Not only that, but you've brought some interest and character out in a child portrait, which so many people never, ever, ever do, because all they need is one fairly well exposed snap on their kid and 99% of parents will be happy with it. You've actually bothered to go further than that and make it interesting to people who aren't the child's parents. Post is lovely, too - is there a spot of yellow split toning going on?
