This looks a little washed out on this screen (but I can't tell because I am on my laptop). So excuse the lack of realistic colour.

Sorry if I'm blind and have missed it but Clayton Bigsby, Dread Head, whaam and all you other guys in the thread who know what you're doing: what kind of post work do you usually end up doing on your shots?

I love birds but all I have at the moment is the 55-250 kit, I'm learning a lot but it can be really frustrating if the bird isn't just chilling out right in front of you.

I normally dont do much post work, if you can see the horizon and it is not straight I will correct it. For the most part I just do some minor tweaks to saturation, sharpening etc.

Alas, all I have is the kit lens on a Panasonic DMC-L1, 14-50mm/2.8-3.5. At least it's pretty good for a kit lens.

I got excited and went out this afternoon. It's so annoying when it's windy, they keep moving and then a shadow covers them at the minute I take the shot. :(

I don't really consider myself good or anything but i'll share my process. Like dreadhead said I don't think much processing is needed on birds, it can quickly look unnatural with silly contrast boosts etc.

Ok this is what i did to this photo (from memory), noise was pretty nasty. Go check large version on my flickr:

edited

original

In Lightroom I added the tiniest amount of fill light as some of the deep shadows were missing, then I loaded it up in photoshop. I do a quick levels (Ctrl + L) just by manually dragging the highlights/shadows to a decent place without blowing them out or whatever. I then use the magic wand tool to get a rough selection of the bird (it usually does a pretty good job) I feather the selection a decent amount like 50-100 pixels, otherwise it would be really obvious you just edited the bird seperately. I do a quick levels on just the bird and zoom in on its eye and boost the catchlight on its eye by dodging the highlights (eyes look SO much better with catchlights in my opinion) I think with this one I even just took a small white brush and painted over the catchlight. I then unsharp mask the bird, i think it was like 2 radius and 150%.

Then went on to the background, inverted the selection, remember its still feathered so it has a nice transition from bird to background which won't be as noticeable that its edited. Again quick levels seperate from the bird. I run noise ninja on the background to get it nice and smooth, I never do this on the main subject because I feel like im just losing too much detail. Then I just went hue/saturation and boosted the yellows/greens a small amount to give it a little more punch. I think thats it, I don't sharpen the background.

Remember I consider myself a noob and my workflow is probably terrible, not using proper masks and such.

I shot ducks today, the dumb ones who haven't got a clue about flying south for the winter.

Sony A200, Tamron adapt-a-matic 200-500mm zoom using a M42 to Minolta AF adapter. The older Tamron lenses are not up to the modern standard but it was cheap and it's an impressive lens to mount up on a camera, or maybe I should say, to mount a camera on.

might as well add some critique

The first one is interesting since he looks funny. It's pretty sharp and everything, you did good considering the lighting that probably sucked (noise is a give away)

You missed the focus on the second one in my opinion, I would have liked his eyes/face to be sharp. Once again low light must not have helped with that. Shooting indoor is a bitch!

Yeah the light was a battle and shooting through scratched Plexiglas. A couple more came out but those were the ones I liked the most, I guess because of the pretty green.

On this shot you can really see the glass:

Yeah, I was a little pissed. I was hoping to really get some fun shots of exotic birds. I mean I knew the fish would be tough but I thought they'd have more birds out in the open.

I bought a Canon 400 f/5.6L, just in time for the weather to suck. This lens is difficult to just pick up and use, takes a steady hand, good monopod, and good technique, especially combined with the 7D AF system which I'm also getting used to. The AF speed is ridiculous though. I'm not too happy with the results I got today, I just think of these as practice.

Here's a couple from my summer trip to Costa Rica. It took several days of searching and waiting to catch this Quetzal:

It had been three hours of nothing that day, and it was just starting to rain... Then this male came and landed on a branch near enough for me to catch him (with my camera, not my hands). For once the horrible autofocus of the S5IS didn't fail me, and I got this shot. My favorite of the whole trip :)

This little guy shimmered like nothing I've ever seen. I really like the shot, but the focus is a little soft on his head. They move SO fast!

Those look great. It was sunny today so I went out again. Not a lot of activity this time of year on Alki, but I got a couple better shots.

I'm still not sure that my lens is perfectly OK. I'm getting a LOT of CA on some shots, and some weird softness and bad bokeh. I thought it was lens/camera shake, but at 1/2500, that shouldn't be an issue.

I wish the buffleheads (last image) would get closer to shore, but they stay pretty far away, making me crop way down.

Che storia figata, ragazzo!

This week I've been taking time to sit at my window shooting birds. Getting a good shot of a flying bird is hard and I haven't had good results on that part.

I really have to get out of the city for this but the weather sucks right now (always cloudy and dark)

A few more from today. Went to visit my sister, she lives in a small town with fewer power lines and way more birds. Next time I'll get there earlier because I only had a couple hours of light to shoot today.

I've had limited success with bird photos; it's the area in which I've had most disappointment, and I blame a lack of practice and a lack of patience.

This is the one with which I'm most pleased. It was very tame, shot from about 2ft away with a 50mm held at ankle height.

Posted these in SAD but birds are birds so here they are. These were shot with the Canon EF-S 55-250 f4-5.6. I went out to shoot some leaves or something and this sucker was right there! He hung out for a few minutes until another bird chased him away. At 250mm this is about as close as I could get.
