Beware the Forest's Mushrooms
Let's do some light Googling and some shaky math.

Average Student Loan Balance in the US: $38,290
Average Student Loan Interest Rate: 4.67% (2006-Today)
Average Student Loan Payment: $503
Average Cost of a smartphone in the US: $790
How often do people buy a smart phone: most people do it every 2-3 years, but 12% do it annually and 5% do it every 6 months.

Using this calculator: https://www.creditkarma.com/calculators/credit-cards/debt-repayment, let's see the difference:

Using numbers above:
91 months (7 years, 7 months) and $7,253.08 interest paid.

Let's forgo an annual phone upgrade and instead upgrade every 3 years. So, the savings of $1580 (for the two unbought phones) over each 36 month period adds $44 (rounded up) monthly for have payments of $547:
82 months (6 years, 10 months) and $6,507.71 in interest. A difference of interest paid $745.37 or 1.9% of the original sum. Yes, it's an improvement, but small. What are you gonna do with your additional $107-125 annually ? Buy property?

Let's say we instead knock that $3160 off the principle. Because Americans famously have three grand knocking around, especially recent grads, right? Payments of $503 against $35,130:
82 months (6 years, 10 months) and $5,970.64 in interest. A difference of interest paid $1,282.44, or 3.3% of the original sum or $183-214 annually.

Yes, yes, Lump Sum Investing is superior to Dollar Cost Averaging. More importantly, this tiny savings opportunity is only available only to the 12% of people who are already engaging in this unusually spendthrift behavior.

Wait a second, I'm starting to think the people sharing these memes might be stupid!

tickets prices and other goods getting inflated by scalpers could be fixed by better authentication measures, but the entire pipeline( incest web??) profits from the current model so lol.

SS can largely be solved by eliminating the 120k cap or whatever it is now. I mean, when 10% of the people control 90% of the money, then there's no other way is there? Everyone seems to be experiencing late stage capitalism but half of those people seem to think the answer is to capitalism even harder.

Also, they've been talking about it for 50 years. While we should always look forward on problem solving, let we can make this fiscally reasonable for another 20 or 30 by uncapping SSI and then figure out what the next fix is later.

Seriously, about 15% of incomes (not the total number of dollars, just 15% of people filing a return) are above that threshold where FICA or whatever is not extracted for social security.

That's a big pool of a lot of money that could address the shortfall indefinitely

It’s $169K now, so even more blatantly exclusive of really high incomes.

The whining about kids these days, demanding their new phone etc, is especially annoying because getting a loving job basically requires a phone and WiFi today. You don’t get to pound the pavement with gumption, handing out copies of your resume. A decade ago when I got my first crappy waitress job they were already telling applicants to go home and apply on the website. Then wait for a call from the hiring manager. For the pleasure of getting three dollars per hour to get groped by and grovel at the feet of the people posting “kids these days do not understand hard work.” to maybe get a decent tip.

To paraphrase: Their worldview relies on them not understanding this.

You can explain it to them until you're red in the face and present them mountains of irrefutable evidence, and they'll just dig in on "Well all I had to do was put on my sunday best and give the owner of the company (who lived 3 houses down) a firm handshake."

It's not just kids. I'm pretty old and have gotten phased out of my career by technology. Looking for a job is a loving nightmare. All this poo poo just to apply and, god forbid you put "MS Office" instead of "MicroSoft Office" or whatever and left out a space or some poo poo. You also get a lot of really shady spam calls and emails that 75% of the time are some sort of MLM bullshit and wind up on a lot of lovely call lists, to the point that I got a burner phone.

That sticker came up in this thread some time last year, and the irony hasn't lessened with time.

What was the GI Bill if it wasn't some sort of 'transactional socialism' to give veterans subsidised mortgages, business start-up costs, free education and so on? Y'know, the stuff that has been credited as a major factor in why the US was such an economic powerhouse in the post-war years?

Not to mention what went on in Europe. It's been heavily washed from the popular history but there was a very real swell of "we're going to fight, strive, suffer and die for our country because we don't want to live under fascism, but things have gotta change round here' - this was a generation that was still in the grips of the Great Depression and remembered the broken promises of 'A Land Fit For Heroes' after WW1. In Britain the 'khaki election' delivered the most radical and most explicitly socialist government in national history, and that was before the war was even fully over. Similar political events happened in the French Fourth Republic and even under the relatively conservative governments in the early years of West Germany.

And yes, job-hunting/applying absolutely sucks these days. Not only have you got to jump through so many hoops, but you get the distinct impression that no-one's even watching you jump through them. My sympathies.

Like, 99% of job applications get filtered through some algorithm to look for keywords that either will get you bumped up to "Talk to an actual person" or rejected immediately.

Yeah every time I have an opening we get around 800 applications, about half of them get past the system that auto screens them, then they make it through the level 1 recruiter, then level 2, and then finally to me.

I did hire a dude years ago who walked to our office and slid his resume under the door. But he was also insanely over qualified for the position and looking for something less stressful

Every corporate job I've had came from networking where someone in the destination company would sell me to the hiring manager who would then take my resume to HR and tell them to set up an interview. Knowing how to talk to people really pays off.

I put my experience right under the job title, and write a short paragraph summarizing all of the things that I've done that are what they're looking for right underneath that. It makes for an easily readable resume that hits all those key word searches. It sounds like a lot of work, but I basically write something longer and generic for the job title I'm looking for, then pare it down for the specific listing.
