I feel like this has been brought up before, but my quick search through the last 10 or so pages failed to find anything (and it may be in either the Beck or GOP thread, anyway) so I was hoping someone could point me to it: Being entirely unfamiliar with the situation surrounding Medicare and Social Security, what's a good counter-argument to the common talking point along the lines of "How can we think government healthcare would save money / be efficient / work / etc... when Medicare and/or Social Security are failing / in debt / broken / etc..." ?

Social Security won't be in "debt" for another 30 years. Tacked on to the fact that congress raids its funds year to year to cover budget gaps.

Medicare is liked by people who use it and do not want to go to a private system. http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2009/07/the-popularity-of-government-run-health-insurance.php

Good point on the former, but the latter addresses people's satisfaction with medicare. What I'm looking for is information on the financial side. That is, the right constantly harps on how because medicare is in debt or losing money or whatever, it's a sign that government attempts at providing or managing healthcare are inherently inefficient. So I'm trying to see how that actually gels with reality., if at all.

Private business raised the cost of medical expenses for years. How exactly can one say that private business will run it better when they clearly can't?

Also, some of the issues are a matter of population. More boomers will be on rolls so costs will go up. Sliding the pay roll tax to cover people who make over say, 250,000 would cover Medicare and social security.

A 2005 CBO report might be worth looking at as well, I haven't read through it yet though.

I think there's some misunderstanding going on here. :) I'm well versed on the conceptual differences between public and private healthcare, and can quite adequately explain my point of view on that. What I have trouble doing is specifically countering arguments that go after Medicare and Social Security from the direction of inefficiency and waste (because we all know that government agencies are inherently inefficient and wasteful ), and then try to use that to support the idea that government shouldn't be handling medical care.

A great example is a 401k v. Social Security. A lot of people's 401k's were destroyed because the private sector ineffectively and inefficiently used their money to fund their own pet projects.

I respect your opinion that he is arrogant, bullying and vitriolic. But hes a man of war, hes got strong opinions about what is essentially the enemy hes been fighting. Im not particularly surprised by his opinions. I have bad opinions about muslims and I havent even had his experiences.

But no matter how you or I disagree with him. Does not make him psychopath.

He is buying into culture war rhetoric about other religions. He says that Islam is the enemy and their inherent believes make them violent. When he was question about which believes he was referring to, he told a man to leave since he can't answer the question. Which indicates to me, he only says that because he believes his Christianity is superior to all believes. He essentially thinks that anyone who practices Islam is a violent barbarian.

This extends to anyone who dares disagree with him. In Allen West's own words: "The malignant narcissism of the President, and the liberal progressives, is laser focused on the disrespect and the destruction of the American Warrior class. They detest anyone who has the courage of conviction and love of America, something which they find unconscionable "

"Liberals seek to destroy any institution of intrinsic value: God, country, family, honor, valor, courage, VIRTUE... Why? Because if such things exist, then they must be defended, which brings them back to their fear of action."

Sorry, that's a psychopath to me. Only his feelings and believes matter.

He then ignores repeated violent rhetoric from the Tea Party, Christians, and Timothy McVeighs in the world saying that the liberals are trying to destroy America.

edit: Also, how do the non-violent protests in Eygpt and the rest of the Middle East fit his world view.

I think the main problem we are experiencing here is that you feel that Muslims happen to be inherently violent. Yet you can express the why. Much in the same way Allen West is expressing himself. He is just sure that the others are violent. Do you see how this maybe a problem?

And this maybe a little inside baseball but Allen West was essentially forced to retire because the Army was going to launch a full investigation where he would lose his pension if he lost. At least that is the story but the Republicans fought to politicize his actions.

The most basic way to think about this is that you are a citizen of a country and you are bound by it's law because you are a citizen. You (theoretically at least) receive all the benefits of the country as well.

Mainly, it is used for making sure you don't say stupid things like well murder is legal in this country, so you can't do anything about it.

I`m not well-acquainted with the American electoral process...

What's the Electoral college? Is it a thing where citizen vote for someone else to vote for them instead of just voting for a candidate and tallying all the votes up, giving some states more weight when it comes to votes?

Every state is worth a certain value that equals the number of reps and senators it has. RI has 4 for example, MA 12, TX 34(?). In most states if you win the majority of votes in state you get the state's value. Get 270 electoral votes and win.

It is a way to protect smaller states from being over run by bigger states.

I don't think I understand the purpose of that. It just seems fairer to go with a straight tally. It makes little sense to me that if there's a 51%/49% split, it turns into a 100%/0%. (Maybe I misunderstand, though)

How does that protect anyone but the majority in a state?

More like lower population states have a bigger effect on the election. Off the top of my head Massachusetts has 6 million people, Maine has 1 million. Maine gets 4 votes, Mass. gets 12. So instead of a 6:1 advantage, Mass now only has has a 3:1 advantage. It allows rural states to have a say in the government and have presidents tailor some policy towards them.

Mooseontheloose
May 13, 2003

21stCentury posted:

Wouldn't it be a lot more efficient to have the presidential elections work independently of state elections? I would assume the rural states would have a lot more luck getting a say with a statesman than by helping one president over the other...

Then again, I guess this is really all about ways to make it easier for presidential candidates to get votes rather than to have "fairer" elections.

Surprisingly, states are decent at handling elections and creates a clear delineation of who is charge and who to sue if something goes wrong.

VITAL STATISTICS OF THE UNITED STATES 1961 at
http://www.nber.org/vital-statistics/historical/nat61_1.CV.pdf
says on page 231 under the section "Race and color" the following:
"Births in the United States in 1961 are classified for vital statistics into white, Negro, American Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Aleut, Eskimo, Hawaiian and Part-Hawaiian (combined), and "other nonwhite."
"The category "white" includes, in addition to persons reported as "white," those reported as Mexican or Puerto Rican. With one exception, a reported mixture of Negro with any other race is included in the Negro group; other mixed parentage is classified according to the race of the nonwhite parent and mixtures of nonwhite races to the race of the father. The exception refers to a mixture of Hawaiian and any other race, which is classified as Part-Hawaiian. In most tables a less detailed classification of "white" and "nonwhite" is used."
Obama's "Certification of Live Birth" shows father's race as "African". That word was not used in 1961 to describe race.
