Pornographic Memory posted:There's still people blaming that on government forcing banks to lend to poor people, which falls under "too much regulation". They literally believe the exact opposite of what happened. Banks were lending to poor people and then trading the debt in the form of sub-prime mortgage backed securities. The definition of a sub-prime mortgage is a mortgage which is given to a borrower deemed risky or with poor credit. The reason this happened was because the government didn't have regulations in place to stop banks from lending money to people who couldn't pay it back. In the end, it didn't matter: The American taxpayer covered the bank's money lost in sub-prime mortgages instead of letting them fail, which depending on how you argue it could have caused anything from a few billionaires bloo-blooing or a run on banks and complete collapse of the credit system. In reality, the bailouts were passed to prevent any chance of civil chaos or any shift in the power structure. The elites said "Wait, wait! We learned our lesson!" and we paid to keep the current elites in the elite instead of allowing the market to bring in new elites. babies havin rabies fucked around with this message at 17:30 on Apr 12, 2011 |

Dominion posted:It's not BIG NUMBERS SCARY, it's that most people, including intelligent people in many cases, just can't process numbers that large in any logical way. There's no frame of reference. You can't count to a billion, you can't look at a trillion of something and say "ok, that's how much a trillion is". It's all abstract and at a certain point people's minds just file it under "A fuckton". Oh come on now. This is totally unacceptable. Anybody with 15 minutes of spare time can look at how large the budget of the fed or any state government is and get a frame of reference. It just goes to show the extent of intellectual laziness present in this country. I can look at a federal budget of $3,500 billion and realize that any expense under $10 million is literally pocket change. Any American able to do 4th grade math should be able to figure out that those numbers can be reduced down into proportions which are relative. if you had $3,500 in your checking account, would an expense of $0.003 to learn about bear DNA be significant at all? If you consider yourself an intelligent person and if you want to live in an intelligent nation, you need to stop giving our countrymen the benefit of the doubt and an excuse to blind themselves through willful ignorance. babies havin rabies fucked around with this message at 19:06 on Apr 21, 2011 |

If it weren't for the strawman at the end they might have achieved in making a point that the DoE hasn't lessened US dependance on foreign oil. Of course, it wouldn't be such a genius and insightful email if the criticism of the DoE couldn't be applied to every action of government, ever. It's almost like we've all become as sensationalist as the media.

Not to mention a certain level of unemployment is necessary for capitalism to run efficiently. You need a pool of waiting labor to draw from and when a nuclear physicist has to resort to working at McDonalds it's actually a market failure. We're all better off supporting that nuclear physicist while he finds another science-place to work at because the economy is better off with another nuclear physicist than it is with another McDonalds employee. Once again complex issue vs. gut reaction.
