Saw this guy in Brisbane the other day while I was out. He had stuff written all over the back of his shirt which I'd have liked to get a shot of, but I had a slurpee in one hand and a bag of shopping in the other which made things a bit difficult.

Yup! Sometimes just a few glances and motions is enough.

What exactly do you tell people who ask you why you want to take their photo? I've seen a few people out and about with interesting outfits and such but I'm too shy to ask to take a picture in case they object.

Wow this is late but thanks!

It's some filter I found off DA but I cant remember the name of it.

If it's a curve adjustment could you post a screenshot of the curves (or the preset if it's for aperture)? Thanks.

I had a look through your photostream and there's some really great stuff, I particularly like the 50mm portraits of people on the street. How did you approach them and ask to take their photo?

it's not street unless you use a Leica with a 35mm lens, and shoot on B&W that you develop at home.

Schofferhofer's photos make my want to go to Sydney instead of the one true city, Melbourne.

The second one is the best, the composition is good and the subject is interesting. The others are just pictures of people in some place, there's not really anything interesting about them to me at least. What about the others had you captivated? You want to capture the decisive moment, not just any old moment.
