Now that we have our own subforum, I feel better about posting GBS style news and videos relating to photography. I wanted to see what you guys have hiding in your RSS readers. Discuss photography without giving advice on gear. Heres one story that I was shocked to hear. Annie Leibovitz is being sued over a 24 million dollar loan in which she put up her real estate and full rights to her photographs as collateral. http://www.pdnonline.com/pdn/content_display/photo-news/legal-news/e3i6098aad6d9c8d3fb75851d49d0b675b6 This just shows that no matter how talented you are, you still need to have some common sense in business. Would you guys feel comfortable putting up the full rights to your life's most important work as collateral? I would think that she should just take more photos if she needed more money. And then on a lighter note. This video documents a product shoot and final editing that goes into making the cover of a Macworld magazine. http://vimeo.com/5989754 Since I'm a hobbyist, I have no idea what it takes for commercial product photography and graphic design, so this video was cool to watch and gave me a lot to think about. Commercial work looks a lot like, well, work.

Do you guys do much research into your locations and subjects for your photographs? This is an interview with the co-founder of Smugmug about the stories behind some of the photos on the walls of their offices. http://www.silberstudios.tv/previous-tips/chris-macaskill/ Really stunning photos made by guys who knew about the right time and place. Makes me wonder what kind of opportunities I have locally, if I took the time to plan it all out. Maybe I can find something like a Manhattan-Henge in my area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattanhenge

I couldn't put my finger on why it was so boring until your comment. There was a huge mass of people there, but none of them were interesting.

I just saw this linked via gizmodo http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1210226/This-underwater-love-Spectacular-photos-Pinewood-Studios-famous-films-display-time.html I should have figured that somewhere there is a special tank built for underwater ads and movies. Since getting into photography, light suddenly becomes everything. I start paying more attention to it and I can't think about controlling it underwater.

Well, I was watching last night's Jimmy Fallon and Elijah Wood was a guest. Next thing I know, hes talking about lomo and cross processing and showing off these pictures of his friends throwing a hammer around. http://www.lomography.com/magazine/lomoamigos/2009/08/10/elijah-wood-shooting-with-the-lomo-lc-a-plus I guess its getting close to prime time for the holga crowd. Does that make it more or less ironic?

So I figure I would tell my story here. I Took the wifey shopping for a new sewing machine over the weekend and asked her if she had done any research online. She told me that they were never too helpful because they lacked specifics. The online reviews of sewing machines were typically women who would talk about how it made them feel, or memories surrounding their use, or examples of clothing/quilts that the machine made. I laughed at this because, except for the Dorkroom, photo sites nitpick over focusing charts and the noise of the autofocus mechanism and never talk about the touchy feely stuff.

I think it would be really cool to be a director of photography. I assume you get to help the director achieve his vision. I like the idea of being the one with the technical knowledge of how to light any scene to make it look like a particular time of day or making it look like there is only candle light because its the 1800s.

I think Jericho has some really great cinematography. It hit me half way throughout the series, that everything has to look naturally lit, because there is no electrical power in the town. All of the indoor scenes are shot near windows and doorways and have gorgeous beams of sun light coming onto the actors.

nonanone posted:I'm just bitching, but after I shot a fashion show last weekend, the show coordinator already lifted my pictures off of facebook to post as her own photo album. I left a nice little note "reminding" her to credit me, but here's to remembering to watermark the poo poo out of everything even if you think no one but friends is going to see it. When I put up pictures of my friends dance recital on fb, other people took the pictures and re tagged all the same people in it again. So there was really no need to save them and put them in your own album. It just didn't really make any sense. But yea if its something you care about watermark the gently caress out of it.

What the Duck has the answer to everything photographic. I really need to order on of his plushies. To add: Why in the hell are photographer sites still embedding auto play cheesy music? Are prospects actually impressed by it? Is this some sort of cary over from the physical world, where studios are continuously known to play soft jazz?

dakana posted:Going off of this, if you can afford it, you should pick up a cheap, used body -- like a 20D or something -- and put a 10-22 on it. Tape it to 10mm, mount it on a pole attached to a helmet so that it is directly above and behind you, and use a pocket wizard to make sure that every photo you take with your main body triggers a shot with the remote camera. Then, every photo you post needs to have this proof included somewhere as part of the watermark. Plus, camera helmets are in fashion. This is crazy enough that it might just work, i actually want to try this, no sarcasm. squidflakes posted:What, and be the coolest photographer ever? see guys, you don't need video to make kick rear end films, you can do it with 18.5TB worth of stills. http://www.pdnpulse.com/2009/11/fantastic-mr-fox-movie-shot-with-nikon-d3s.html Fantastic Mr. Fox was a really good movie and was shot using a variety of DSLRs. The coolest bit though is their crazy custom software to live stream the shots all on a network for Wes Anderson, the director, to view from anywhere.

quazi posted:David Attenborough calls this scene "one of the most complex ever attempted in natural history filmmaking": I like how meticulous it was, but also how homegrown(pun intended) the solution was. I saw a bicycle wheel as a pulley, and the lens had some kind of put together flare hood from gaff tape. vide compositing techniques are amazing. I just saw this on chase jarvis's blog, I had absolutely no idea how far green screening had come. The scene at the end of this video with Hiro blew my mind, I saw that live and never once thought it wasnt filmed in time square. http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2009/12/green-screens-and-greener-pastures.html
