Check out industrial parks, maybe. We were doing a carpentry project at work and rented a unit on the edge of town for $250/month or something. It was huge, could easily fit 3-4 cars in it and had a loft area. The guy that had it before us had brought in a hot water heater and was trying to fix it up to live in, lmao.

Not to derail that much, but you can straight up rent warehouse space for $250/month? Did you have to sign a lease or anything? I am very interested in this idea for all sorts of projects I don't have space for in my apartment.

The reason the people who are obviously going to lose go on these shows is, there's a pool of $5000 put up by the show. The parties split it, minus whatever the ruling is. So, in this case, the plaintiff got $2500 judgment, plus 1/2 of the $2500 left, which means the defendant walked away with $1250. I wonder if they thought the blow to their reputation was worth getting a small payout like that.

The woman behind her when she says she doesn't know the speed of the lens is quite hilarious.

Maybe they can use the money to buy a real lens.

Just wanted to say, because I read this thread then ventured out in a storm last night, I really believe the way to get noticed with your photography nowadays is to actually get out there and do something utterly ridiculous.

I don't even really like the guy's photos, but they are masterpieces, solely because no one else is willing to go to those lengths to get photos like that.

And that's why I wish there were brochures I could download, and letters I could send, and clipboarded girls on street corners I could hire, to sell the idea that photography, as we know it, should be criminalized and prosecution chased.

I guess it could be argued photography would stagnate, but the photos would at least be worth something.

This quote was in the Gear thread and it made me think:

So when are we going to see a shift in thinking from "135 frame size" to "DX/APS-C frame size"? ZoCrowes says he rarely shoots less than 35mm, but to him 35mm is, in terms of angle of view, closer to what I think of as "50mm". And what a guy shooting 120 would consider "80mm".

So given that crop format sensors vastly outsell 135-format cameras, and all manufacturers are now making lenses designed for the small sensors, how long before people start thinking about things in terms of crop format fields of view?

I'm sticking with 135 format as long as I possibly can, but I get the feeling that it's never going to catch up to the popularity of the smaller sensors. Even if someday you can build a 135 sensor for the same price as an APS-C today, the smaller chips will get cheaper in turn. The "full-frame" folks today will be the new "medium format" with their weirdo big long lenses.

I don't think there is a problem here. The focal length of the lens doesn't change 35mm is still 35mm. I think you should just be familiar with the field of view of the system you use or are talking about. I don't even bother explaining crop vs full frame to new people anymore. I just tell them this camera uses dx lenses and you want a 35mm because 50mm might be too tight. If they get any more curious than that, then they are already aware of aps-c vs full frame.

The only question that I would have about buying an older MF back is that you're going to take a real hit in usability/speed in terms of the processor, etc-- when I interned at a studio that was often the major factor that kept the MF gear shelved for the DSLR. Obviously if you've got experience with it (which I'm assuming) and it's not a problem, then it's not a problem. But still something to think about.

Are you saying that older MF backs take longer to process a DSLR so you can't take shoot in a continuous mode?

Something about being in an awesome locale, throwing a roll of 120 into the 645, cranking it to start but for some reason it wouldn't lock to the beginning of frames, and my camera doesn't have a film number window so I had to just wind it to where I thought each frame started.

It doesn't sound bad but I woke up pretty upset. Needless to say, the first thing I did was pull my 645 down off the shelf and dry wind it to make sure it would stop where it was supposed to :colbert:

funny you mention an iPad, because I totally preordered right after they went on sale. Fully expecting my current laptop to last for just a wee bit longer until I could afford a macbook pro. I think I can use it to show off photos, but mostly I need to learn how to develop apps/magazines for it.

Happy ending though, my awesome wife bought herself a new laptop tonight that she is graciously letting me use. We got an Asus U50, core i3 for $650. It's pretty nice. I played around with netbooks for the first time and just was too meh, for $300. I think I would find myself just frustrated with the tiny screen, and the battery life isn't that much better at the low end. You gotta spend closer to $500 for something in the 6-8 hour range, and for a a couple hundred more, I chose to get something that I could work on in the field. Hoping to do tethered shooting when LR3 comes out, and I'll use my iPad for all day youtubing.

Doesn't make the good stuff any less awesome though, especially when you consider the difficulty involved.

I was reading where some of the early Daguerreotypes are very sharp and captured a ton of detail. I'm not sure if this is quite the same, but http://stateoftheart.popphoto.com/blog/2009/01/chuck-close-photographs-brad-pitt-for-w.html was used because of its detail.
