It could be Drakensang, which is indeed from Germany. It is a pretty standard (though not D&D) fantasy rpg - mystical elves who love the woods, industrial dwarves who love beer, you know the drill - where supposedly extint dragons play a big part in the mythology. You can't turn into a dragon though, at least not as far as I played (near the endgame).

As was stated, it's Divinity 2: Ego Draconis. The german version is out, and you can patch it to have English Text. The english version won't be out till the 15th I believe. It is a really cool game from what I played through it. The difficulty curve is a little wonky though. Going from barely surviving a fight with a small pack of skeletons to raping dragon babies in seconds back to barely surviving against some goblins again. Very gear dependent.

I have a pretty simple recommendation request this time: Scary games. What are the spookiest games I can play, when it comes to the PC? They can be from any time, I'm not picky.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm looking for:

FEAR - Not a big fan. I guess the shooter action was pretty fun, but the horror "sections" were just uninspired, in my opinion.
STALKER - Loved it. Lots of great, creepy atmosphere-building, and the sheer terror that persisted past the jump scare of a bloodsucker was awesome.
Penumbra - HAVE NOT PLAYED THIS. I played a demo a long, long time ago. It was kind of clunky, but I've heard great things about it since, and it sounds like they must have improved a whole lot. Is it worth playing?

Silent Hill 2, 3, 4 & 5 have all been released for the PC. Of those, I would really only recommend 2 and 3, as they have the best atmosphere, story and gameplay in my opinion. They're all separate stories, so you don't need to have played one to play the other.

Dead Space is also available for the PC. It does a pretty good job of building tension. It does have a number of the jump scares, but there's more to it then just that. Personally, I have a hard time with the game because of the controls as I can't get very accurate with the mouse, but others don't seem to have the problem. It's probably your best bet for a horror game on the PC.

poo poo, I knew I was missing something. I've played Silent Hill - well, 2 and 3. How worth it are 4 and 5?

And thanks for the Dead Space recommendation, I somehow forgot about that.

4 was a lot of fun for the first half of the game. Then it goes through all the levels you already did, but backwards, and escorting someone. There's also some other annoying aspects to it, like your safe area becoming dangerous, and ghosts that can't die. The story gets kind of out there too.

I bought 5 for the ps3, played it for about 4 hours, and returned it. I can't really say what is wrong with exactly, but it's kind of obvious fans of the first game made it, but that doesn't mean they did a good job.

I really couldn't recommend either unless you find em cheap.

Also, I forgot about System Shock 2 and Alien Vs Predator 2, definitely seconding those. They're old, but still pretty good.

Have you played Spelunky? It's an insanely hard yet rewarding platformer. The levels are random, but the worlds aren't. So you have four random levels of normal cave, then four random levels of jungle, and so on.

There's Tomba, for the Playstation. It'll probably be hard to find, but it's a pretty solid game and probably closer to what you're looking for.

And of course the oft mentioned Shadow Complex is basically Super Metroid 2.0.

And if you like contra, you've played metal slug, right?

Two things. One, an RPG (JRPG or CRPG, doesn't matter) that has a ton of side quests. Final fantasy 6, 7 and 8 were good for this. 6 had something to do almost everywhere I went in that game. Same with 7. 8 had a GF everywhere, and that awesome card game, so I always had something to do. Nippon Icchi games are also good examples of this, with tons of extra worlds to do. Dragon Quest 8 and Persona games are not good examples of this. Final Fantasy 9-12 weren't very good on this either, never played the ones before 6.

And an RPG with tons of customization. Either in the main character, or any character. Stuff like the aforementioned Nippon Icchi games, where I can customize the skills, and the items of the characters. I wanna be able to build my characters however I want. I wanna sperg out on em.

One CRPG that immediately comes to mind is Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, which gives you a huge, uniquely inspired world to explore and offers a lot of customisation in terms of skills and stats. The only drawback to the game is that it isn't really challenging once you get out of the early game and it's so buggy installing the unofficial patch is pretty much required.

Black Isle's repertoire of RPGs would also come highly reccommended, especially Fallout 1 & 2 and the Baldur's Gate series.

Heh, yeah I'm a big fan of Arcanum, and had forgotten to mention that. It pretty much is perfect for having plenty to do. Same with Fallout 2. I can't get Fallout 1 to work on Windows 7 though.

Arcanum is pretty much what I'm looking for. Wherever you go in that game, there is always plenty to do. It's never just "Go to town, talk to guy, then leave town" it's go explore, find some quests, complete some, have interesting conversations, etc.

But yeah, if you haven't already played them, the Baldur's Gate trilogy is right up your alley- Big game world and lots and lots of side missions to complete for fun and profit.

Shadowrun looks like it could be cool. I've tried the SNES version, but had no idea what to do. I might have to try the genesis version.

The Black Mountain Mines are so incredibly difficult at the level it tells you to get there. Once they say that's where you need to go for the main quest, you're supposed to go and do a bunch of other quests to level up and get new gear. Otherwise, you're just gonna get raped by those golems.

Golden Axe
Streets of Rage
Gungrave
Prototype
Splatterhouse

I'm looking for both new and old, from 16-bit to the modern era, all suggestions welcome. I'm not so interested in arcade-specific titles because MAME is a pain in the arse or more complex brawlers like DMC and Viewtiful Joe.

Hulk Ultimate Destruction for the PS2 was an earlier version of Prototype basically. It's a lot of fun running around as the hulk and just destroying everything.

The Dynasty Warriors series isn't everyones cup of tea, but it's all about killing huge swarms of enemies. Just non stop killing.

I don't know if you think it's too complex or something, but you have God of war and God Hand up there so I don't know why you'd think they were, but both Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta are fantastic action/beat 'em ups.

Any other RPG suggestions?

Two fairly recent RPG games that you might want to check out is Divinity 2: Ego Draconis, and Risen.

Divinity 2 you start off as a dragon slayer, and eventually you turn into a dragon (don't worry, I'm not spoiling anything). The game has lots to do in it, is pretty big, plenty of places to explore and tons of quests. The biggest drawback to it though is that the difficulty is all over the place. You can be running through a dungeon getting the poo poo kicked out of you, abusing AI and line of sight, and then two pulls later you'll start destroying everything because you found an awesome axe. Then ten minutes later you're dying again.

Risen is from the makers of Gothic 1 & 2. You're on an island that's of a fairly decent size, and you'll choose what class you want to be by joining with certain groups. The combat takes some getting used to, but is rewarding. You can take on monsters much stronger then you, but it'll be hard, and will take forever. The difficulty of this game isn't as all over the place as Draconis, but there is a certain spot in the game where it just skyrockets and if you haven't built your character right, will make it really really hard. I had to restart three times because I hosed up my character and just wasn't happy with what was going on. I also suck at games, so you're mileage may vary.

Personally, I enjoyed Risen more, but I think both might be worth checking out to scratch that RPG itch.

Hey speaking of Suikoden-

I really liked Suikoden5... Suikoden1 somewhat less. Suiko5 was great because it had so much extra poo poo to do not even counting the recruitments, what with the trading and fishing and decoration and voice/window/whatever collection. I usually hate JRPG characters but these ones were mostly very likeable and well fleshed out, especially considering that there's loving 108+ of them (the beavers were all irritating cunts but whatever). I even ended up with a mild crush on Oboro. :3: Hell even the ridiculous anime cliches didn't bug me because the game didn't rely on them. The NPCs always had different poo poo to say too, when I returned to their towns after events.

So which Suikoden, if any, might I also like? I heard that Suiko4 is awful, and that Suiko3 is considered really good... it looks significantly more uh, serious than Suiko5 though, not sure if I'd be into that. Suiko2 is also considered okay by reviewers but it's considerably dated...

HMMM.

ninja e: I do not consider Suiko Tierkreis part of the *proper* Suikoden series. :colbert:

Suikoden 2 probably has more side stuff to do then others. 4 should be avoided at all costs. 3, I'm not even sure why they called it Suikoden. It wasn't very good in my opinion, and I felt more limited with everything I was doing then in the others.

I will play (almost), anything and probably enjoy it. I don't care if a game is "old" or the graphics are "outdated", good solid gameplay OR a lot of fun is what I'm looking for.

Games I played recently and loved:

Dragon Age
Singularity
Bad Company 2
Assassin's Creed 2
Mass Effect 2
Dwarf Fortress
Saboteur
Arkham Asylum

Also played a lot of the major games from the past couple of years like Bioshock, Oblivion, Civ 4, Fallout 3, the Total War games, Mirrors Edge, Modern Warfare etc.

I've played all the old(er) classics like Deus Ex, Fallout 1 & 2, Thief, X-Com games, Baldur's Gate etc.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I was in the same boat as you not so long ago (about three months ago) and was desperate for games to play.

Some I didn't see mentioned, but should really help with the PC time:

Just Cause 2. There's a thread for this, it's awesome, you basically run around an island blowing up every god damned thing and you've got a grappling hook. If you've still got internet for the time being, download the parachute dlc and the mod for it, and holy hell, you will have fun.

Stalker Call of Pripyat. I'm not a big fan of these games, but walking around a nuclear wasteland looking for artifacts and enemies can be pretty drat fun.

Metro 2033 is another russian nuclear wasteland game, but much more linear. It's a good solid 10 hours of fun, and has some great atmosphere.

Risen is another game I try to recommend anytime I can. It's an RPG from the guys who did Gothic 1 and 2, and is great. The combat is hard, but very rewarding. Only worth playing through the first half though (about 20 some hours). But you can play through that part again and see things you never did the first time.

Dead Space if you haven't played that is a great survival horror game. But if you get it for the pc, for the love of god, TURN OFF VSYNC. The game was unplayable with vsync on for me, and I had no idea why until I stumbled on the PA thread for the game. It's a great game once you turn that off.

Almost Last: Mount & Blade - Holy hell, it's like Pirates but on land. Build an army, set up trade routes, take over towns and nations, fight for kings and lords, I spent way too many hours on this game when I first got it. I think though it might have a problem if you download it steam because it connects to an online server to authenticate. If there's a way around it, you can spend your entire month on this game easily. I suggest you download the natural mod (I think that's what it is called) for it though. Haven't played Warband yet.

Others: Torchlight - A diablo 2 clone. World of Goo - A physics puzzle game. Both of which should be really cheap.

Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of decent puzzle games on the PSP whereas the DS is overflowing with them.

Lumines: A trippy kind of tetris like game. Multi colored blocks fall and you have to match the colors while some cool music plays that actually goes along with what you're doing. Much better then what I'm describing.

Puzzle Quest: This is bejeweled with an RPG attached. So you have to use spells and abilities to beat your opponent at bejeweled. If she likes bejeweled, this will add a new level of depth to the game.

The concept behind Sacred seems really redundant, however Diablo was redundant, but I loved Diablo.

The thing is though, Sacred 2 isn't a good Diablo 2 clone, and is at best a mediocre game. I really really wanted to like the game, and for it to be good, but it just wasn't. It doesn't have the speed or flow that Diablo does. It has some technical issues, like frame rate, and just general game play bugs. I mean, if you can find it for like 5 bucks or something, why not?

As for games that are fun while in an altered state, that's a rather vague question. I'm guessing you like RPGs, which unfortunatly are somewhat lacking in quality on both consoles. Not to say there aren't good ones, but compared to the PS2 era, it's just not the same.

That said, games I think fit the criteria: Bayonetta, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, and Dead Space. I don't even like sports games, but Skate 2 (which should be pretty cheap now) and the Fight Night series is a lot of fun.

Also, the games on the Playstation Network seem to be made for this sort of thing. There are so many visually appealing and/or trippy games on it, just browse through the catalog.

And if you're playing with friends, Pain is more fun then it has any right to be.

Does anything like this exist for PC? Or should I just stick with console and handheld stuff like Disgaea, Fire Emblem, FFT, etc.?

I guess I could sum this up by asking for a recommendation of online/multiplayer tactical role-playing games for PC that would be somewhat similar to the games I mentioned above.

It's not multiplayer, but Fallout Tactics sounds kind of like what you want. I don't remember any real base management, mostly just choose your guys and go.

Disgaea is a completely different beast from other strategy games, where it's more grind until you can kill the guy and less figure out who to deploy and what skills to use.

I'm looking for a PC RPG (action or otherwise) I can break, like Morrowind: sneaking around and finding overpowered weapons early, crafting a random spell/equipment combination that makes you unstoppable for a good chunk of the game, killing guards to take their awesome armor. All that fuckery that's been patched or balanced out in newer games. I'm a munchkin and I admit it.

Games I loved:
Divinity II: Dragon Knight Saga
Neverwinter Nights + Expansions
NWN2: MotB (played original and Zehir, they were okay)
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Icewind Dale 1 & 2
Baldur's Gate 2 (although I don't have the time for a game that long anymore)
Borderlands

Games that were 'meh':
Gothic 4 - Combat isn't bad, but it's incredibly linear. Secrets consist of 'collect 30 hidden objects to get a powerful weapon'. Boring.
Witcher: EE - I can't really say what I didn't like about this game, except that nothing about it was particularly interesting.

Games I've hated:
Fallout 3/NV -> Combat sucks, and the game requires too much leveling to be fun.
Oblivion -> I could never get into it. It's ugly, combat sucks, and even with fan patches the thrill of finding a random dungeon and getting overpowered loot is gone. I'd be willing to try it again if there's a patch that would adjust it so that those random dungeons lying around would have great (unique) gear at the end. I last tried this game back in '08 and none of the patches then would fix the hosed loot tables.

Two Worlds is probably the definitive 'break it over your knees' game that you can cheese and end up slaughtering the whole world because you can.

Knights of the Old Republic 1&2 has some force skills that make the game trivial if you choose them.

You could try the original Divine Divinity. It's not the easiest game to break, but it's definitely possible. It plays like Diablo, and the game doesn't really pick up until you get out of the first town (actually that's the same for all my recommendations, but this one is probably the worse offender).

And I'll second Arcanum and Fallout 2. Both are definitely breakable, but not in a very obvious sort of way the first time through. Second time through (or just a restart) becomes a lot easier since you know how to bend the games to your will.

I would like to play a game where I can absolutely tear up everything in sight. I don't care if it's an action game where I control one dude who flips out all the time or if it's an RTS where I can control lots of dudes with lots of guns. I want to be able to go to beautiful, well kept places, and just destroy them with lots of explosions and gunfire (or spell effects if the game is that type) and see everything blasting apart. By the time any given level is finished, there should be nothing but smoke and cinders and blackened craters and the ragdolling remains of blown up, destroyed stuff everywhere.

Examples of games like this:

World in Conflict / Company of Heroes - the artillery in these games looks devastating. Missiles, fuel bombs, lots of fire and explosions and destruction effects stay so any given place you go looks like a post-apocalyptic hell by the time the level is over. And lots of ragdolling.

Red Faction: Guerilla - 3rd person game, but you can blow up everything.

Dawn of War 2: Lots of badass things doing badass stuff. Lots of gunfire and bombs and smoke

Diablo 2 (endgame) - walk into room filled to the brim with enemies, flip out and cast spells that light up the whole place, lots of enemies explode, guts all over everything. Move to next room, repeat.

Just Cause 2 - Amazingly fun game where you can blow up everything, fly away on your jetpack and then find something else to blow up. Huge map all sorts of vehicles, a grappling hook that lets you shoot all sorts of things like an oxygen canister, grapple it, and then ride it like a rocket into the sky.

Get it for the PC, play it a bit, then mod it so the weapons are cheap, and your jet thrusters are infinite.

-EVE Online is perfect, but I'm not ruthless enough to play EVE. You seem to have to be grandma-stabbingly evil to be good in EVE.
-X3: TC has too many problems.
-Distant Worlds looks interesting, but costs $70 to get the expansion that fixes all the UI issues.

2: Open Post-Apocalyptic World. Think Fallout and Stalker. Exploring vast wastelands, ruins, dungeons, etc. Extra points for First Person.

PC Only

1: Have you tried Freelancer? It's rather open world and open-ended, but I found it a lot of fun and have been trying to find something similar to it. I liked being able to just point in a direction in a star system and see what was there. Plus the combat was fun. Though I hated X3TC.

1: Darkstar One: Supposed to be like Freelancer, but not as good. More RPG elements, but not as good as Space Sim elements. Haven't played it though.

2: Really need more details on what you've played for this. It's a really broad category, and without stuff to go on you'll just be given stuff you've already played.

The summer doldrums have hit, and I've got nothing to play, so I turn to you to help me out.

A few questions:

I just picked up Darksiders and enjoyed the crap out of it for $20. But there's nothing else like that for the 360, is there?

I hear Bayonetta is similar in combat, but I can never really seem to get into those crazy Japanese action games. The only DMC I could get into was the first one, and the third one beat the poo poo out of me so badly in level 1 I sent it back.

Is FFXIII really as bad as they say? It's stupidly cheap right now, but my girlfriend's worried it'll turn me gay. (I also share this concern.)

Same goes for Alpha Protocol. I was stoked about that until I heard it was just terrible.

I'd really love to play an RPG, but I find that most jRPGs make me want to claw my eyes out and I've beaten all of BioWare & Bethesda's stuff.

Whatever it is, it'll need to be on the 360. Thanks ahead of time.

Bayonetta is nothing like Darksiders. Darksiders is an action RPG, with rather average combat, while Bayonetta is based entirely around the combat and is more like Devil May Cry 3 or Ninja Gaiden but even more over the top. That said, Bayonetta is one of the best games I've ever played.

FFXIII is really as bad as they say.

You could try Nier. It's an Action RPG with not the best gameplay but amazing story, voice acting, writing and music.

Anyone have a recommendation for a driving/racing game that has an open world like Burnout Paradise or Fuel, but with the car customization of something like Gran Turismo?

Basically I just want to drive all over the place when I want, and then still be able to buy a new car and upgrade it so I can drive all over the place even faster or gently caress it up. PC preferred but any system will do.

I'm looking for an early 90's jrpg style game for the PC. Something in the vein of Lufia or Breath of Fire. Free would be great :)

Cthulu Saves the World is supposed to be pretty good. Very early 90's style to it, and it has Cthulu. It's not free, but 3 dollars isn't much at all. Breath of Death seems even more old school, not sure about that one though.

Exit Fate and Last Scenario. One is like Suikoden, and the other is more akin to the classic types (DW and FF) of early jrpgs.

I'm looking for a platformer, preferably a very good one

And not supermeat boy or that other one where you flip upside down to platform(I forget the name).

Didn't specify platform, so.

PC
Eversion - A rather simple (in execution) platformer with a small twist that puts it into an almost horror game.

Limbo - This is kind of a platformer, but it's more of a puzzle game with some platforming.

N - The classic where you're a ninja, and you have to get to the exit.

Spelunky - A roguelike platformer. Divided into four areas, with four levels each. Each level is different. Very hard, but probably one of my personal favorites.

Braid - If you haven't heard of this, I don't know what to tell you. But it's a platformer where you have some control over time.

Wii

Donkey Kong Country Returns - A fantastic throwback to the old Donkey Kong Country games that were on the SNES. A lot of people says it plays better with the classic controller, but I found the wiimote to be fine.

Kirby's Epic Yarn - Very easy, yet still fun game. You're Kirby.

New Super Mario Bros Wii - It's Mario, on the wii, and supports four player Co-op.

Bit Trip Runner (Also on the PC) is a fantastic music/platformer hybrid.

PS2

Klonoa 2 - I love this game. It's fun, but kind of easy and short. Traditional 2d gameplay.

Sly Cooper Collection (Also has an HD remake on the PS3 that utilizes the Move) - Cel shaded platformer. Don't know too much about it, as it didn't grab me, but people seem to like it.

DS

New Super Mario Bros - Classic Mario gameplay.

There's lots more. Especially if you start straying into the hybrids (Veiwtiful Joe, Cave Story, etc). Of those above I would recommend Donkey Kong Country Returns, Klonoa 2, and Spelunky above all others.

Old and mediocre, but Outpost springs to mind.

Mediocre is right. I don't usually argue against someone else's recommendations, different strokes for different folks and all, but no one should play Outpost. It's terrible, completely buggy, and not even close to fun.

Unfortunately though not many space games like that are going to be very modern. Star Control 2, Startopia, Master of Orion 1 and 2 are as close as I can think of. Startopia being the one I'd recommend the most, but it's kind of a business sim and not city.

Almost all the space games being released now are RTS or Civ like games focusing on building colonies to support fleets, or action games like X3 or Freelancer. I would love to find something like SimCity in space (I oh so wanted Outpost to be good when it was released).

Edit: Dammit, I was too late.

New to the thread, and havent read all 75 pages, so I apologize if Im repeating something thats been asked and answered ad nauseam.

I played final fantasy tactics for the play station a long time ago and immediately enjoyed almost everything about it, and have yet to see that type of game since. Im not into consoles much right now.

Was wondering if there was any sort of tactics style game equivalent for the PC. I loved managing and leveling up units, the story, the gameplay/battle style.

Are there any type of games like that?

Hopefully it doesn't have to be fantasy. Cause there are a number on the PC.

Jagged Alliance 2 - I strongly suggest reading the OP. Very in depth strategy game, with leveling, inventory management, the works. Very open strategy wise too. Set in a sort of modern warfare (not the game) type setting.

X-Com - Is set in the future. Aliens invade earth, and you have to build and manage a base, set tech research, build and hire your team, etcs, and then go out and fight those aliens however you want. Destructible environments too.

Fallout Tactics - Like the above, but without base management and using the Fallout rules.

If you're willing to go console, there's stuff like Ogre Battle (many different consoles), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), The Front Mission Series (PS1 - PS2), and a whole slew of others, almost all fantasy based. Some of those if you do get your hands on you might be able to emulate on your PC in case you sold your console.

Ok. I have played Titan's Quest, Sacred 1 and 2 and Torchlight. I am looking for a Diablo style game for a semi graphics whore that lets me collect loot and be a reclusive single player person when I want to be but also pal around with people when I feel like it too.

When I say Semi-Graphics whore I mean make the graphics at least be comparible to diablo 2. Not that hard :)

The graphics are pretty poor. But apart from that I think it's a great game. Din's Curse is a fun action rpg with awesome loot, co-op play and dynamic quests which are really awesome that you can fail and gently caress up. It's way more fun then it has any right to be. Try the demo. It goes to level 10, and you can see how your town can get hosed.

Not exactly appropriate for this thread, but not sure where else to post. Is Enslaved any good? It's 9 bucks now, and I've been eyeing it for a while. I'm just on a budget and really don't want to drop 9 on game that lasts only a few hours with no replay factor.

Any good RPGs with really in depth character customization? I want to be a ~*special snowflake*~ (and crunch numbers and min-max :spergin:). Please don't say anything from the Elder Scrolls series since I've beaten all of the main games multiple times. Maybe a DnD game would be nice?

The Disgaea series for the PS2 and 3 are made for sperging pretty much. Very anime, though not the worse offender and can be amusing at times. But you can min-max everything, from your characters to your items. It's my go to game for that sort of thing.

And in case you live under a rock, Diablo 2. Specifically with the Eastern Sun Mod. Lots of customization and number crunching in that mod. Way better then vanilla in my opinion.
