You said you're a Looking Glass fan, so you may have played it already, but how about Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri? It's a series of FPS combat missions in very light mechs, with a few squadmates who you can order around, rather than an RPG. But was very good in '97 which was when I played it. There's also the Marathon series which Macintosh owners swear is the best thing ever, and is now playable on PC and I think freeware, but I've never played it myself.
