Spouse and I just finished our respective applications. Hoping to serve next year. We just started our medical stuff, both nearing the end, and the website crapped out. Still excited about the possibility of serving!

I just heard back from a recruiter today and my spouse and I are on the Get Recommendations Submitted part of the process.

So, go see a specialist of my own to get them fill out a report this Friday. Hoping it won't be a problem. I have to take maintenance medication for a renal condition, but (I think) it's not severe. Anyone wanna psych me out about this? Or assure me that they have diabetes and it's not a problem to have take a pill every morning that you could bring with you?

How long do you have to wait after submitting stuff for your pre-medical clearance? I know I'm being impatient, but the wait is nerve-wracking.

Presumably we're still in the running, but my spouse is having to do a lot extra clearance regarding weight (BMI too low [but it's actually fine]). I haven't heard anything since I submitted my stuff, though, so I guess I'm cool.

Application process is looooong. Spouse has to visit with a therapist now to talk about her medical history. Time marches on.

Well, spouse got their psychological clearance sent in Friday. Today is the first time I've heard back from Peace Corps since I sent in documents like a month ago. I got a message from the medical side saying this:quote:We have reviewed your Health History Form and other medical information you provided and have issued you a conditional medical pre-clearance. But then later they say: quote:However, in order to accommodate your [MEDICAL CONDITION], there will be limitations on where we can place you. Anybody else get this message?

I have this condition where people look into my eyes and just cannot look away. But seriously, I talked to somebody else and they made it sound like it would be okay. I just need to take this one pill every day. Somebody told me diabetics can serve, and my condition doesn't seem that severe.

I'm now legally pre-cleared.

You were serving with your spouse then, right? Were you guys trained together or separately? How much time did you get to see each other? What was your site (if you don't mind sharing that)? Assuming your pregnant spouse was a woman, how was she treated during her service? Were her ideas or actions undermined or dismissed because she was a woman? Did you both work together or have separate assignments. If your assignments were separate, could you describe what your daily schedule was like? Hope I'm not coming off too strong here.

Got accepted to do youth development, shipping out at the beginning of next year. Anyone want to give me some tips and tricks?

I got some real good news from a doctor who agreed to sign off all of my medical documents if/when that happens. So, for the third time in about a year, my spouse and I are applying to Peace Corps again. So, wish us luck.

If you want to preserve your integrity and how you appear to these people, follow Ragnarok's lead. That said, I would do what Cronogamer did.

My entire country, which is in the Caribbean, is getting consolidated because of some stupid hurricane. This sucks a whole, whole, whole lot. Any one have some words of wisdom to share about this bullshit?

This is the correct answer. I'm in Jamaica. There was a lot of talk of leaving the island but it looks like we will be riding it out. This country has never had an evacuation of PCVs before so there's a lot of unease among us about this breaking the record.

Fleta Mcgurn posted:Hi, guys. I was just wondering if there are ever any openings for archaeologists and/or physical anthropologists? I have an MSc in Osteoarchaeology with a decent amount of experience identifying human remains, and could be very useful in excavating mass graves and identifying bodies. I checked the current openings and all I see is stuff for English teachers. I'm already teaching, so I'm not super interested in doing that as a Peace Corps position at the moment (although possibly in the future). I know that we have shorter-term volunteers (I think called Response Peace Corps Volunteers) that do more professional work requiring specialized skills. You may want to look into that.

Thesaurus is right about that. You also have much more leeway now than in previous years in choosing what kind of work you want to do and where you want to do it.

You're in Indonesia, right? I don't know anything about your training but here's my very well-intentioned if ultimately meaningless post: I don't have any specific recommendations but my PM gave me a thumb drive with a ton of material covering a vast range of stuff. I don't know how she compiled it, but I think she got them from the Regional Director or something. Some tiles are: Youth Livelihoods & Financial Literacy; Working with Youth; Youth Development through English Practice; Youth Entrepreneurship. Some of them deal with how to bring the community into the process. It is all Peace Corps documents tho and I suspect you might get them eventually in PST (but IDK anything about your training in Indonesia). Also, congrats on making it through your first week and change of PST!

Thank you australian and man's man Tony for your valuable contribution to the Peace Corps thread. Your quick look once again cuts to the heart of the issue, exposing the flaws in our program. Truly, now we can tell these 10-year-old girls that they really don't need to be learning to read anyways, have you seen this post by a guy who likes really fast cars? Finally, we are set free.
