Do you have any more of these 'strange but cool' laws that are in Germany? I know of the one where you're not allowed to use your lawnmower on a Sunday, are there many others? Also, do you know of any good website on cooking German food? I want to make the decent Semmel Knodel I had in Munich but no luck so far

If you have time, give Regensburg, Erfurt or Bamberg a try. They didnt get bombed in the war (much) so are much older style and much more beautiful. Frankfurt, Nurnberg and most of Munich are a shadow of their pre-war beauty.

satiat posted:What kind of cultural food is there besides sausage and sauerkraut? I cannot say that I am a fan of either, but all the bakeries mentioned have my mouth watering. Just go into any restuarant and order Schnitzel (Pork, Chicken etc). Then have a German beer with it. I've gone to painful effort to try and cook Schnitzel at home and I think I have it cracked. Nicest meal you can eat.

Liface posted:Panorama view of the city from the Schlossbergturm in Freiburg. If you go to Munich when you're in Bavaria, pop up to Regensburg while you're there. Its the biggest city that wasnt bombed flat by the British in WW2, so is totally different from any of the more modern ones. Actually if you're looking for nice cities to look at, check out this thread. http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=674434

Default Settings posted:I'm alreay miffed that I have to leave out Bamberg - Many stations along the route are because of my interest in old architecture and history in general. Nurnberg is great and all but the reconstruction after WW2 was a disaster and the city is an absolute shadow of its former self. Look up the Pellerhaus or the Toplerhaus to see what they did to it. They rebuilt the castle but the dreaded phrase "in a simpler form" is all over it. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pellerhaus I get in a rage whenever I hear the farce over the Pellerhaus. How anyone could have put a protection order on that disgusting 1950s facade is beyond me. They need to snap out of it and realise the original building was a masterpiece. Rebuilding the insides just wont work without the facade. http://www.stadtbild-deutschland.de/rubriken/staedte_und_orte/1/index.html I'd be TEMPTED to leave out Nurnberg and do Bamberg instead. The recon of Nurnberg was half assed and only about 10% of Bamberg got trashed so would be much better for old architecture. Munich is worth seeing. They did keep the old street grid but reconstructed a good amount of the old buildings. There is the odd godawful recon, but the historical stuff was restored reasonably well. Also Munich is worth it just to see the terrifying awesomness of the Asamkirche. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asamkirche http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asamkirche_%28M%C3%BCnchen%29 Edit: And the street the Asamkirche is on is quite nice, didnt look like it got demolished. Edit2: Dresden isnt on your list? THE_Chris fucked around with this message at 23:03 on Jul 2, 2010 |

Neuschwanstein is ok but I found it a bit disappointing. Its no better than the photos you'll find on the internet and they rush you round the place too fast. I'd say forget that and go up to Bamberg or Regensburg for that day. Both cities not bombed too hard in the war. Regensburg is the only major city that didnt get a hammering so is still a medieval city. Worth seeing. When you're in Munich, go here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asamkirche
