Roast Beef's biological family is always so depressing, it's a good thing the surrogate one he's managed to build with his friends is a good one(well outside of a distressingly high probability of getting shot)

Anyone made an edit of that early comic asking about why did someone gently caress a monkey in relation to aids into one about why did someone make soup out of a bat for COVID, cause it seems like a pretty obvious one to me

Without the accent she could have been a good anti-Phillipe. He’s the kindness of childhood naïveté, she’s the part where you do rear end in a top hat things because you don’t know better and your sense of empathy hasn’t developed yet.

I think part of the problem is she doesn't get any comeuppance for being an rear end in a top hat either(at least part of this being that she gets hit by Onstad's tendency to drop storylines or characters harder than basically anyone else in the comic), like what makes Pat work is the fact that karma often smacks him hard for how much of an rear end in a top hat he is(like how his horrid attempt at "chocolate covered cherries" directly leads into him getting shanked by Todd in the ankle), and this usually applies to most of the other characters too

A lot of Pat’s stuff is vegan/health alternatives that do the “trying to be a direct substitute” for something, and those are nearly universally awful. There’s good vegan food, but it’s never the type of stuff that’s like “I can’t believe it’s not pork”.

Well reached the end again on my current read through, shame that the comic kinda went on a decline for the last five or so years of it's run(especially since in that period it probably had like maybe 3 months worth of the content that would have come out back at the height of the comic), like it was still pretty good overall, but you could see the cracks forming once you get to the arc where Ray goes to Wales to find his nephew and onward

Still would be nice if it could come back again

I just finished reading the arc about Philippe going back home to live with his mother and it’s giving me some Big Feelings. For context, I moved away from the state I grew up in five years ago to start a new career, and I’m back home on a long trip this week. Whenever I come back, I think a lot about moving back to where things are the way they used to be, but it’s just never gonna happen. Onstad has a habit of articulating things better than I ever could, and once again this rings true: “Home, she is...the grand illusion. She’s a time, not a place, and your time here is over. Pack your bag and go home to this life you already have. Your maman, she will cry, but that is what a maman must do. Life is cruel...but at least it is life, at least for a while.”

Edit: It really kills the denouement of the strip when that god awful Nice Pete goes back to high school arc comes immediately afterwards. Ugh, I hated that one.

Yeah not a fan of either of those arcs

Totally forgot that panel.

Also gonna toss in an obligatory ‘gently caress cops’, on account of the times.

1) In real life they would never actually catch a child predator like that or put in that kind of effort without significant outside pressure, let’s be real (and also look at the stats)

2) statistically speaking, at least one of those three cops has his own CP or victim of another form of abuse and the other two are at best knowingly enabling him.

Idk, it’s weird seeing older depictions of police in media nowadays. Like it’s harder not to go through the lens of current events. The first time I read it years ago I just assumed Connie would get arrested and have a bad night.

But my gut split-second response to seeing that panel now was holy poo poo, Cornelius is gonna loving die

Is this what the GBS kids call *crack, ping?*

On the other hand Achewood makes it pretty clear over the course of the comic that the local cops are both corrupt and incompetent, and the closest they ever get to beig depicted in a positive way is that they're used to keep Roast Beef's toxic family members away from his wedding by jailing them for their awful disruptive behaviors

I mean the comic uses the phrase "no longer afraid of the police" as a descriptor of being drunk, and that was in like one of the first 20 or so strips(and became a recurring thing)

I think Ray's still fairly easy to like, for two reasons.

One, he explicitly fell rear end-backwards into his wealth. He's not outright poor before that, but he gets gently caress-you money out of pure dumb luck, without loving anyone over to achieve that.

Two, he's well-meaning as a rule. When he does lovely things, it's not because he's malicious, it's because he's dumb and didn't think something through before he did it.

If his money were dirty in any sense, or if he was ever just a straight-up rear end in a top hat, he'd be a much harder character to tolerate.

Yeah pretty much the only time he's ever intentionally malicious to someone who didn't deserve it was that weird thing with Philippe, and that was due to Ray thinking he was teaching him an important lesson about life

Also on the topic of how wealthy Ray was before either Devil Piano Skills or Ancient Pornography, as someone who has both a rich parent and a poor parent(and lives with the latter), I'd say Ray was definitely rich growing up, but what I call "lowercase rich" which is where they definitely have a lot of money and normally don't have to worry too much about non business related financial stuff on a day to day basis(assuming no one in the family has a drug/gambling/shopping/plastic surgery addiction), but it's not quite to the point where it becomes "gently caress You Money" and they can just completely ignore the way our society is supposed to work

I go back and forth about Teodor on this. He's clearly benefited from the Ray ATM at times (baseball cards, etc.), but he's the main cast member who's always broke and scrounging for rent money. So I'm not sure if he's making the Ray Orbit money but still living beyond his means, or if he's usually telling himself, "nah, I'm better than them, I don't need to mooch off Ray, I can work for my money," and then just... not doing that. Because in my head, Teodor is definitely the kind of character who would believe that kind of thing about himself despite the empirical evidence otherwise.

I figure it's a combination of being bad with money and not having consistent work
