Somehow I only just now found out we had an Achewood thread, anyways I think this one is my favorite strip;

Roast Beef's biological family is always so depressing, it's a good thing the surrogate one he's managed to build with his friends is a good one(well outside of a distressingly high probability of getting shot)

Anyone made an edit of that early comic asking about why did someone gently caress a monkey in relation to aids into one about why did someone make soup out of a bat for COVID, cause it seems like a pretty obvious one to me

Now at the Ray's Toilet Party arc, and man I just really dislike Ultra Peanut, she's just a huge rear end in a top hat that isn't particularly funny either and honestly her whole speech gimmick just kinda feels racist in a rather uncomfortable way that feels really out of place for Achewood

Ugly In The Morning posted:Without the accent she could have been a good anti-Phillipe. He’s the kindness of childhood naïveté, she’s the part where you do rear end in a top hat things because you don’t know better and your sense of empathy hasn’t developed yet. I think part of the problem is she doesn't get any comeuppance for being an rear end in a top hat either(at least part of this being that she gets hit by Onstad's tendency to drop storylines or characters harder than basically anyone else in the comic), like what makes Pat work is the fact that karma often smacks him hard for how much of an rear end in a top hat he is(like how his horrid attempt at "chocolate covered cherries" directly leads into him getting shanked by Todd in the ankle), and this usually applies to most of the other characters too

probably my favorite of the "gently caress You Friday" comics, Cornelius's "gently caress along, now" might just be the greatest way of telling someone to gently caress off I've ever seen

Daktar posted:The best Pat moment was when he discovered he was gay, had a genuine opportunity to reflect on himself, and still continued to be an rear end in a top hat. Yup, though I do think he actually did become slightly less of one than he was before, or at least he stopped doing stuff that would send him to jail Ugly In The Morning posted:A lot of Pat’s stuff is vegan/health alternatives that do the “trying to be a direct substitute” for something, and those are nearly universally awful. There’s good vegan food, but it’s never the type of stuff that’s like “I can’t believe it’s not pork”. My sister recently became Vegan(at literally the worst time in the world to do so) and honestly most of the fake meat she's bought has been actually pretty decent

Well reached the end again on my current read through, shame that the comic kinda went on a decline for the last five or so years of it's run(especially since in that period it probably had like maybe 3 months worth of the content that would have come out back at the height of the comic), like it was still pretty good overall, but you could see the cracks forming once you get to the arc where Ray goes to Wales to find his nephew and onward Still would be nice if it could come back again

Necronomicon posted:I just finished reading the arc about Philippe going back home to live with his mother and it’s giving me some Big Feelings. For context, I moved away from the state I grew up in five years ago to start a new career, and I’m back home on a long trip this week. Whenever I come back, I think a lot about moving back to where things are the way they used to be, but it’s just never gonna happen. Onstad has a habit of articulating things better than I ever could, and once again this rings true: “Home, she is...the grand illusion. She’s a time, not a place, and your time here is over. Pack your bag and go home to this life you already have. Your maman, she will cry, but that is what a maman must do. Life is cruel...but at least it is life, at least for a while.” Yeah not a fan of either of those arcs

Feels like it needed Nice Pete going back to jail or something at the end though, last time he got all attempted murderous on one or more of the main cast he ended up hoisted by his own petard, or rather stabbed in the brains and rear end a bunch by a really stupid invention of his

On the other hand Achewood makes it pretty clear over the course of the comic that the local cops are both corrupt and incompetent, and the closest they ever get to beig depicted in a positive way is that they're used to keep Roast Beef's toxic family members away from his wedding by jailing them for their awful disruptive behaviors I mean the comic uses the phrase "no longer afraid of the police" as a descriptor of being drunk, and that was in like one of the first 20 or so strips(and became a recurring thing)

I remember Connie explicitly mentioning in his blog that he felt a little bad about fleecing Ray at pool all the time, but, what's one to do? disaster pastor posted:I go back and forth about Teodor on this. He's clearly benefited from the Ray ATM at times (baseball cards, etc.), but he's the main cast member who's always broke and scrounging for rent money. So I'm not sure if he's making the Ray Orbit money but still living beyond his means, or if he's usually telling himself, "nah, I'm better than them, I don't need to mooch off Ray, I can work for my money," and then just... not doing that. Because in my head, Teodor is definitely the kind of character who would believe that kind of thing about himself despite the empirical evidence otherwise. I figure it's a combination of being bad with money and not having consistent work

So apparently Robert Smith of The Cure fame is collaborating with The Gorillaz on a song, which immediately had me thinking of all the times this strip has made jokes about that band*(well that and a joke Strong Bad once made claiming that someone dressed up as Strong Sad for one of the Homestar Runner^ Halloween videos was in fact a "dumpy Robert Smith action figure") *The Cure to be specific ^So I get hit with nostalgia for two dead or mostly dead artifacts of early 2000's Internet Pop Culture
