Hah, he's a 'listener'. How utterly horrifying would hiring Todd as a male escort be.

Spillane, if you don't like Achewood, maybe you should, I don't know, stop reading Achewood?

Is this a hard concept to figure out?

Hey, I'm a huge fan too, and own more than one Achewood book, but this is such a bad, tired argument that could be applied to anything and doesn't really deflect criticism so much as ignore it.

There are things I could bring up about Achewood that I dislike, but I've noticed a trend that whenever it seems like the strip is starting to sag suddenly it turns around with some excellent standalones/storyarc, so I'm far from ready to start bashing it. Still, just because Onstad posts here doesn't mean this is the Achewood Appreciation Station, and I'm sure there's quite enough of that going on at his own forums.

We're all big boys here, legitimate criticism shouldn't be met with calling people trolls or saying "shut the gently caress up unless you're posting about how you love it." Of course, Spillane was getting pretty defensive but he still made some good points brosephs!

Finally got book 2 from amazon, and it is a treat. The prologue and history of Achewood chapters almost make it worth the purchase price alone. My one complaint is that it seems sparse on actual comics, but that's probably because he had to pack all those pre-cats comics in the back which I only skimmed through.

I liked Lyle's origin best.

This is Achewood, and that little bear just saw his squirrel friend break through a puddle of North Korean Magical Realism piss.

is Todd anyone's friend? other than blister, of course.

Although I thought the North Korean bit dragged on too long (the offline week not helping) I thought this strip made up for it, not only in humor but in making Todd something other than a drug-addicted little poo poo.

He wanted to save his new friend Lee :(

The others are incredibly depressing (even Beef's) but Lyle's just seems like par for the course, look how resigned he is :shobon:

Onstad do you think you're going to get in trouble when your daughter learns how to use the internet and finds out you make a living drawing rock-hard cat dicks all day

It seems like there's a pretty high-level of "here's a list of humorous things" strips lately rather than straight-up comix.

Which I enjoy from time to time, but so many in close proximity kind of lessens the impact.

Just popping in to say that this is the best Achewood strip in over a year, and that it is absolutely beautiful. Very well done, Onstad.

This. I shouldn't feel depressed over a strip about cartoon otters. Goddammit.

I give the Dresden Codak guy a lot of poo poo for updating at the pace of a snail, but as hypocritical as this may sound, I understand Achewood stalling a lot more.

Sure, its a tiny little black-and-white strip, but the writing is gold. You can't force something like "MY WHOLE LIFE I BEEN SOCIETY'S STARED-AT MAN"

Also, they look like they've been knuckleheads since small times. I agree, I would love to see a childhood strip that includes Pat. The existing childhood strips show that Ray and Beef's personalities have been pretty much the same all their lives. It would be interesting to see if the same is true for Pat, or if his dickishness evolved gradually.

We know that he only became a vegetarian after a traumatic experience with a duck, but it never stipulated that he wasn't already a huge dick.

Man, I wish I had Chris Onstad's problems (running a successful business that consists of me getting awards for and writing comics). Hell, I would even do it without begging for money during the months-at-a-time I couldn't be bothered!

My heart truly goes out to him :(

There's no ads on the website itself, so Onstad gets no money off of more people visiting it. Merchandise also has a ridiculously small profit margin, so his increase in income would be negligible.
Also, I feel the influx of more people visiting his website while he barely updates would have an effect similar to this on his psyche:

He's free to do whatever he wants, and I don't buy into the "the artist has an obligation to the audience" bullshit either, that's dumb and any artist anywhere has the right to gently caress off whenever he pleases. If he can't handle being lauded as Time's best comic series of the year or whatever, its understandable to collapse under that sort of immense pressure and slink off.

But to do that while putting up a "Hey, sorry no new comics in months, please donate!" message as literally the first thing you see when you visit the site? Who is he, Aaron Diaz*?

*Diaz at least has the excuse that creating one page of his comic takes probably something like 50 hours, and even at his worst he was still putting up like one new page a month
