I've been in a similar situation, luckily driving down the road when a large piece of sheet metal comes off the tradies ute in front of me, was following him probably a little too close but had no choice but to centre it and hope for the best. It took a decent chunk out of the front of the hire car that luckily wasn't noticed when I returned it. Don't know what I would have done should I have been on my bike. I don't tend to ride multi lane highways on my bike anyway.

On the weekend I was merging onto a freeway, just as I'm checking over my shoulder and roll on the throttle I notice the cars in front of me have decided to stop instead of merging. Jumped on the brakes and moved slightly outter of the lane, ended up level with the car 2 in front of me before i could realise.

Lessons learnt? Stay further back and don't assume other drivers aren't complete idiots who can't merge at speed.

New one for me but from what ive seen its not uncommon. Can be summed up in two words - disc lock. Was having a chat to some family, show them the new bike, they walk off (fortunately) then i put in helmet and gloves and completely forget i've a disc lock on. As i go to take off the bike lurches, stops and starts heading to the ground. Luckily it weighs three fifths of gently caress all and I catch it before it goes.

I forgot my disc lock while I was pushing my bike around the yard 2 weeks ago and cracked my front fender :(

Hang on, don't you live in the inner west? How do you have a yard large enough to fit a bike in, let alone push it round?

I live in a small cottage in Enmore, heaps of places have courtyards that'll fit a bike.

I was just kidding with you, i could probably fit my bike in my back yard too, if it will fit through the front door first.

A couple of recent near misses. I was riding down a deserted road in the National Park pushing it slightly and significantly above the speed limit. I spied up ahead what looked like a stick.on the side of the road, but then moved and resolved into a goanna, who then decided to be scared by the bike and to run straight into my path. I tried to go out wide to avoid him (can't imagine hitting a 5 foot lizard would be too much fun, plus they're cool). I almost ran off the road at high speed and there wasn't much run off there - moral, don't ride at silly speeds on roads where you expect wildlife like this this to be around.

The other one was this morning on the way to work. Lovely rainy morning, feeling a little hungover and I'm following the car in front way too closely but not at any real speed. We we approaching a set of.lights that had just gone orange but there was plenty of time to make it through, I (wrongly) assumed the guy in front would go through and i could follow and make the light. I glanced away at something else for a second and then he decided to stop at the last minute. I grabbed a handful of brake and tried to scrub off some speed but noticed I really wasn't slowing enough. Ended up hitting his rear bumper at maybe 15km/h. He got out had a bit.of a look at his car, and then got back in without saying anything and drove off. I had a bit of a look over the bike but can't notice any damage.

Guess its a bit of a wakeup that i haven't been leaving enough space and i really shouldn't try and get to work 5 minutes earlier.

Had a little one today, riding down a street near my house with my mind on other things and a little Honda Civic decided to do a U-turn in front of me. Forced me to do a little emergency braking but that's no biggie - been practicing endos / stoppies lately so could have gotten on the brake much harder.

Lessons i learnt are to a) not ride down that street so quickly (was about 10-15 km over the limit. B) pay attention in areas i know people are constantly parking.

This one happened to me a couple of months back when I was ferrying my mate's new-to-him CB400 over to his place (he was not yet licensed for it), I forgot to post the video. Nothing too dramatic, just the usual poo poo, a driver not being aware of a motorcyclist's presence, and not making any special effort to check for one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DdP7SHaWOU&hd=1

In hindsight, that's a popular pie joint coming up on the left, and I should have seen the car ahead stopping and anticipated that the guy behind him may get impatient and try to go around, even though it looked like he was going to stop.

I've gotten so used to that poo poo by Sydney drivers now that its almost an instinctive reaction to start covering the brake and looking for a place to run off when i see cars start to slow in the other lane.

Actually had one the other week, coming along the road to work and there's a car turning right ahead. Bimbo in pajamas and on the phone in her SS Sportwagon obviously isn't going to see it so i wasn't too surprised when she merged completely into my lane without slowing. Id given myself a little extra room and was prepared for it when it happened so no biggie but i still gave her a blast of the horn and a little single finger salute to let her know what a dumbass she was.

I've discovered silk liners definitely make summer gloves better for the chilly mornings.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. Went liking for something to combine with my gloves last night but had pretty much resigned myself to buying winter gloves. Where did you get your liners?

I hunted around for a bit but in the end i bought them online from amazon for less than i could find them in Sydney. They're not going to be a full on substitute for winter gloves but worked well enough that i could (barely) still feel my fingers after a 20 minute commute in 7 or 8 degrees this morning.

Wow, i didn't think it was possible to buy anything at mcas for less than triple street value. Maybe i should have shelved my prejudices against them and tried there.
