Holy gently caress, perhaps they aren't as robust as I thought, though I was aware before that they weren't indestructible.

So here's how they fail;

1. Diff pin fails
a) To fix, weld diff pin and replace w/ a welded MSP diff or a mFactory one

2. Second or Third gear shreds to pieces (as pictured)
a) To fix, replace w/ expensive aftermarket set or swap in a new gear box

3. The power causes the aluminium case to flex between shifts as power is re-applied (second to third usually) and the shafts destroy their mounting points inside the transmission.
a)To fix this, a thick plate is machined to fit where the shafts meet the 1/4" aluminium mounting point on the transmission.

Or to fix all of this, you simply replace the G-series with a Toyota E-series from a FWD Solara or a AWD Celica (if you have an AWD BG chassis car.)

OH - and for all of you with ZX2s etc - there's a company producing new rear subframes that let you install a Toyota Celica rear diff/axle setup in a FWD Escort GT/ZX2 chassis. There's tons of info about the Toyota trans swap + this new AWD setup if anyone wants it.

Mind you, the adapter plate that's currently out there (about $270usd) only works for the BP motor (which can be installed into a ZX2 easily).

Would that E-series bolt into a Mazdaspeed (BJ chassis, 2.0 FS-DET engine)? I ask for possible options down the road, and to avoid ending up in this thread.

Nope. The tranmsission needs a special adapter plate, shifter mechanism gets switched from rod and linkage to cable, custom clutch setup w/ Toyota disc and BP pressure plate, custom motor and transmission mounts, modified front crossmember, and a few other odds and ends.

That's just to swap the Toyota E-series into a BG (Escort GT, Protege (1990-1994), and Mazda 323) chassis car. You'd have a ton of other issues with;
- different chassis
- different motor (FS vs. BP)

It'd be like starting from square one for yourself - but it can be done.

ab0z posted:

What company is offering those subframes? Can I order one? Is there a detailed writeup that you know of so I don't have to hassle you for details? :glomp:

The company is Pierce Motorsports. He custom fabbed them up for a few customer cars and then put additional pieces up for sale (on request I think).

Early Nissan SE-Rs have the same problem, and people have broken those PAR gearsets. The case flexes and spreads the gears apart, that's what kills them.

Pfffttt... even machined inserts can't save the G-series from the flex.

The only saviour is the almighty Camry transmission. As lame as that sounds.

This is what a finished AWD rear bolt-in subframe looks like for a FWD Escort/Protege/323. It's about 25lbs lighter than the normal AWD Protege setup and a fuckton stronger. Mind you, the spare tire well would have to be cut out, fuel filler line re-routed, etc - totally worth it though to have Toyota diffs out front and back (far more durable than anything Mazda makes involving driveline)

I've had to strip insulating blankets from a few steam headers inside a coal fire power plant. They look loving wicked!

I just wanted to add looking at a 30' (yes, foot) long steam header is like looking at the worlds longest equal length header.

Never seen a doubled up AF. I have seen a foam pre filter... and that's it. Guy wanted to know why his tiller was smoking and burning so much oil. He had gotten it second hand that way, though.

e:There's a hierarchy to the poo poo an engine goes through. It goes something like concrete cutter>tiller>leaf vac>chipper>lawn mower. You should be checking oil every time you operate anything, changing it every 6 months on the lawn mower and every 8 hours of operation on a tiller or concrete cutter (if it's 4 cycle). If you keep your AF from plugging, change it every year and even just keep the oil topped up, you can get a B&S Quantum based engine to run for 15-20 years.

Our Honda HS55 snowblower (tanks treads, yo) is most likely older than me. Never had ANY maintenance done until it came with the purchase of the house. Pretty sure I pulled out the original plug and changed the original (prob) oil.
