I strapped Spiffness's new Contour HD to my head and took my SM to an MX track. The video looks good, the lighting isn't great since this was an indoor track, and the camera was pointing a little too low. http://vimeo.com/8143793

So. The stick of gum camera performs much better and does indeed to 30fps, but that means it chews up more memory. You need 8GB for the 90 mins (of battery life). ebay AUD$11 for the camera and AUD$23 for the 8GB microSDHC card. http://landofbile.com/uploads/hardware/gumstick-camera/gumstickcam2.jpg The result: http://www.vimeo.com/8161306 The source image is clearer than that vimeo link. Cons: it forgets the clock setting on reboot.

My GoPro came the other day. Unfortunately it's decided to be ridiculously cold down here lately so I haven't had a chance to use it up in the mountains to look at my riding technique yet. I did have time to take it out for a quick ride around the block the other day to test it out though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-By_R1GW1K0 Neat little camera. I mean that literally too--it's hard to tell from pictures online but these things are really tiny.

Whats the best bang-for-not-much-buck cam out there? I'd like to try the whole recording while riding thing before I commit to a ContourHD or whatever. Is there anything out there thats inexpensive and relatively OK? EDIT: Besides the pen spy-cam posted above?

Keep in mind that is VERY hard on cameras not designed to take the shock and vibrations associated with motorcycling (or other activities). I killed a nice little nikon point and shoot by doing this: In current GoPro news... I got my misplaced mount removed and placed a new one on my helmet. Quite a bit higher and it works much better. I also played around with the removed sticky-pad and placed one on the low right hand side of the helmet with the side mount. I like that view . Edit: what's good program to edit video with? The GoPro records in mp4 so the super lovely windows movie maker doesn't want to play nice.

Thank you, I meant to mention that and I forgot. I bought a RAM camera mount and I'm hoping that some sort of soft dampening material (foam tape?) between the clamp and the handlebar will eliminate some of the harsh higher frequency vibration. I have a cheapish Canon point-and-shoot that I'll sacrifice next summer but hopefully it will survive.

Silver posted:Pretty sure goo gone will get rid of it, or that's what I was told. Did you get a replacement pad? My go pro came with a 1 replacement for just those occasions. I ended up heating it up and was able to get it off. It really didn't leave much residue and what was left came off easily with some rubbing alcohol. Mine didn't come with extra sticky pads but it did have three flat and two curved mounts. I'm sure I can find a sheet of that 3M stuff and trim to fit the bases or something. For those of you who have mounted bases on your helmets -- have you noticed more noise or whistling when the camera is *not* on the base? I can't help but think that's going to cause some extra noise.

I haven't noticed any noise. Man but rolling down the highway with the camera on the helmet creates some amazing drag, I make it a point to take it off if I'm going to be going straight for awhile. Ung.

I plan on putting one of the flat mounts on my top triple clamp and keeping the camera there for most of the time. It doesn't take to much to swap it around so if I want a more POV look I can just throw it on the helmet when I stop for gas or something . I'm also considering putting one on the very end of the tailsection so I can Goddamnit winter needs to end. Now. edit: What have other GoPro users tried for editing software?

Sony Vegas Pro 9. Had trouble with render/encoding formats before discovering the 264-based ones like 'Sony AVC (.mp4)' and messing with the options.

Hey, uh, for any of you guys with GoPro's, I would highly suggest not using the "permanent" sticky mounts. A couple buddies of mine were just down at Jennings this past weekend and one of them had his GoProHD vibrate off the bike at about 110mph. Luckily the person behind him was my other buddy who noticed the camera starting to wobble before it went flying. Otherwise it could have been a potentially awful situation. Apparently the waterproof housing works extremely well against impacts too! The camera is fine, it just took a chunk out of the housing lens so he just needs a new enclosure and it'll be good to go again. But yeah, I'm not sure if the clasp failed or what. He got the whole thing on video though. The suction mount is rated for speeds faster than any stock street bike is capable of (200mph) and it lets you get better angles anyway. No points of failure either, unlike the clasp on the sticky mounts. Just a warning

Just got a Kodak ZI6 for Christmas, I guess i'll build a mount for the naked bike. It shoots 720p @ 60fps (and 720p@30fps and VGA). H.264 codec i think? So a 4gb card is about an hour worth of video. In good light this thing looks decent.

After trying (and eventually succeeding) in removing one of the sticky pads it's amazing one would fall off in anything resembling normal speeds. Did he put the mount on his bike when it was relatively cold out? I could see that affecting the "stick" of things, along with maybe peeling paint or a generally dirty surface... But holy poo poo, those fuckers really stuck to my helmet. I could see the mount breaking if it got whacked by something though. What did they end up finding out after saving the camera? Did the roll down the road pretty much destroy the base of it?

Felt fine when I put it on, dropped off soon as I went to pavement. Decided I would use sticky mounts from then on.

It's a little cold to try anything out but I picked up one of these at the local toys r us for $20 on clearance. http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Blue-Tony-Hawk-Helmetcam/dp/B000AYAJ34 I had seen it before and googled a few reviews and videos and figured I'd throw down $20 and give it a shot. I'm thinking I can wrap the band around my headlight or forks as the bracket allows 360 degree rotation. Here is a random video of one in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0NYISvhh4E

Luckily the person behind him was my other buddy who noticed the camera starting to wobble before it went flying. Otherwise it could have been a potentially awful situation. I've never been able to get the GoPro HD suction mount decently attached on solid plastic (clean, flat, smooth), but it seems rock solid on the flat part of the gas tank. Haven't had any trouble with the adhesive mounts on the side, but I've only used those for a few run sessions. I feared the same scenario you describe. Took a lot of care to scrub the poo poo out of the mounting surfaces, made sure mounting surfaces were flush, heated up the surfaces before applying, and clamped for a couple minutes. And then safety wired it with zipties. Probably overkill.

^^^ maybe overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Weird that you haven't been able to get the suction mount to properly attach to plastic. I've gotten some pretty funky angles through fairing attachment. Maybe the HD mount is different than my standard GoProWide.needknees posted:Goddamn. You lot are quiet, which I guess makes sense since it's been Winter in the US. I joined the HeroHD club the other day and took it for a test run last night, mounted to the tank: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtIYuW8SVIc Pretty happy with the results, except for the wind noise. Will try the waterproof back next time, or experiment with putting some foam over the mic holes in the housing.
