I have two questions:

1. What do you guys with decent-sized pedal boards use to power all of your gear? I've been looking at the cheaper power supplies like the 1-Spot and Godlyke (what an awful name) but all the reviews I've read complain that they give off a ridiculous humming sound.

I power something like 13 pedals with my 1spot, and there's no hum because I don't live in an 18th century crapshack. There are better power supplies, but not for anything nearly as cheap as the 1spot.

Try to stay away from places like Zzounds, musiciansfriend and Harmony Central for reviews. Zzounds and Musiciansfriend is full of teenagers bitching about why their Frontman 212 won't let them sound like Atreyu, and Harmony Central might as well change it's name to Hyperbole Central.

I've never heard about this being possible, and I've been reading some forums with a lot of EHX-fanboys. The set of parameters being controlled is pretty different on the two pedals. Also, it's my impression that EHX is a pretty decent company, and if the foot controller was the same for both pedals, they'd probably be clear about that.

As an EHX fanboy, I can tell you that they do almost anything they can to save money. The space drum, one of their less popular pedals, was only allowed on the product line because the designer managed to fit it in a Big Muff Pi enclosure. The reason this is relevant is because if the two controllers were the same, EHX could just slap two jacks on it, label it a foot controller and call it a day, as opposed to labeling them differently. I imagine that's what the case would be if they were the same.

Not that it's not possible for them to be different, but by the end of 2010, I hope to be able to confirm that they're different :frogbon:

I'm looking at the user manual for the iSP Decimator ProRack, and it has this page describing the inputs and outputs:

Now, I have a vague idea of what balanced/unbalanced/high impedence means, but what I'd basically like to know is could I run the signal from my guitar to Input 1, from Output 1 to the amp's input, from the effects in the effects loop to Input 2, then from Output 2 to the amp's effects return? If that's possible, is it ideal? I saw a video where the guys from Periphery all use 2 noise suppressors and they say that that's the reason they sound so tight, and I want that.

Basically like this:

Yes, you could drill out the necessary hole to wire that switch if space permitted, but since it's probably made out of plastic, I can't tell you anecdotally if that would be best. On the bluesier end (which is where I'm rooted in technique, as I learned to play out of an infatuation with Jimmy Page) I tend to aim towards Gov't Mule's tone. Warren Haynes cleanliness goes well with this amp, as you already know. I like to break out the wah-wah and get down to some 1970's porno-music, every once in a while. But on the heavier end, I'm into metal that varies in the realm of Every Time I die, All That Remains, and Between the Buried and Me. Though, I certainly cannot shred like the latter two.

For overdrive, I'd still suggest the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret. I haven't played it, but the overdrive junkies at TGP gave a raging hard erection for it, so it may suit your needs. For Distortion, the Wampler Triple Wreck.

I've had the same electric for about nine years, and rather than buy a new axe (my roommate is already pissed off that I bought the amp before paying rent (don't worry, I'm good for it)) I was thinking about trying some guitar necromancy.
It's a Gibson Les Paul Special (the kind of "special" that has mittens pinned to its jacket) with all the original hardware.

Replace. Maybe just one of them. I already checked out the connections at the toggle switch, input, and volume/tone knobs. It all looks fine, so I'm guessing the problem is in the pickup itself (which I have not removed. I'm alright with electrical workings, but I'll admit I'm afraid to gently caress it up worse)
Anyway, I figure this might be a good time to upgrade. Perhaps install something with a more robust high-end for the bridge pickup.
I enjoy making it scream.:black101:

Pickups are a touchy thing, and we actually have a thread here on SA about them. I'm not 100% sure what your tastes are, so I'm not going to throw out blind recommendations for you (I'm much more well versed in pedals than pickups). That said, Dimarzio has a really cool pickup finder tool on their website, as well as audio samples (taken from various artists' songs). Seymour Duncan has both a tone chart and audio samples for their products.

Based on what I know of your tastes and of these pickups, I'd check out the PAF Pro from Dimarzio and/or the SH-1 59 from Seymour Duncan.
