I have a question about the Boss Loop Stations. I was looking at the list of features on the RC-2 and the RC-20XL Loop Stations and they seemed pretty similar. Basically I was wondering if there are major differences between the two or if the RC-2 is just the same thing in a more compact package. Is the RC-20XL so much different that it's worth paying a considerable amount more? I basically wanted a decent looper so I can record some bass lines to play along with because I have a lack of people to practice with. Plus I might try and record some stuff for fun.

I've got a question for all you customizers out there. I want to stencil a small design on a guitar. It doesn't have to look fancy or professional. Is it possible to just get a stencil and spray paint a smalled stenciled design over the existing finish or is this a more complicated thing? I'm really only concerned with the paint sticking and not coming off later. The guitar is a MIM Stratocaster if that matters.

Paramemetic posted:It is a firm belief of mine that every musician ought to own a keyboard, even if he or she isn't a keyboardist, exactly because it helps with theory and is easy to tinker with to explore different sounds. Speaking of which, I play guitar and bass and I wanted to learn keyboards but I can't get my hands to work independently of one another. Anyone got any tips on what exercises will help me overcome that? I originally thought being able to play the other two instruments would make it easier to translate over to keyboards, but I've found that's not the case at all.

MC Fruit Stripe posted:I think I give up on Line6. I had an AxSys 212, an Ax2, a Pod, a Pod 2, a Pod XT, and now a Pod 3. I wish I was kidding. And I've finally gotten sick of it. There's no good dirty tones in my Pod, at all, it's not possible. I can get gorgeous clean sounds, and I can play rhythm guitar for Mudvayne, but that's it. It's clean, or crushing distortion/fuzz. Where are my dirty sounds? Where are my "guitar solo in Hotel California" sounds, or my "Pink Floyd - Time" sounds, etc? I want distortion, but I don't need DISTORTION, I just want it breaking up a bit. I suggest the Electro Harmonix English Muff'n. It's a tube based overdrive pedal. It can do distortion and it can make the kind of tone you're describing. Don't be thrown by the name. I doesn't sound anythign like the Big Muff. There's some pretty good demos of it on youtube and the EHX site. MC Fruit Stripe posted:I've been considering that as well, but it would be the same thing, I'd want one that could do a multitude of sounds, not just throw a tube screamer down and be done with it. Oh....well in that case, I got nothing. The English Muff'n is an awesome pedal though. CPL593H fucked around with this message at 00:42 on Feb 25, 2011 |

Tesseraction posted:To be honest I recommend it. It feels bad at first because of the space and financial implications, but the sheer versatility of specialisation in each effect really rewards you in the long run. I agree with this. I was just talking to someone who was using one of those mutli effects things to replace his pedal board and said it was still not as good as real pedals. And the one he was using was supposedly one of the more expensive ones. He switched back to pedals right away. I don't have personal experience with that kind of rig, but I've always figured that when you have one device that does a variety of things each one of those effects will be a watered down version of the individual pedals. I don't think you can get the range of sounds from a modeler as you could get from actual pedals. As for the prices of pedals. You can get awesome discounts if you buy them used. Most of my pedals were bought pre-owned from people who barely used them. They all work great and look brand new. And I got them for considerably less than the retail prices.

Popcorn posted:I'd like to do some simple electronic drums at an open mic performance. My bassist has an iPhone and reckons there may be some simple drum machine apps we could use. Can anyone recommend some (preferably free)? You can get a decent used drum machine for 100 dollars or less. I would recommend that over using an iphone app. Unless you want it to sound lovely. Cheap keyboards also have simple drum patterns as well and those are a dime a dozen on Craigslist. I bought this drum machine used for 90 bucks and you can probably find one around that price online: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/mrt3/ It's pretty easy to use.

I wanted to make a guitar more prone to feedback. Will opening it up and removing the shielding help that? Or does the removal of the shielding just make it more prone to buzzing sounds and interference? The guitar I want to do this to is a MIM Strat. I've even been considering replacing the pickups with some from an old Silvertone/Teisco type guitar to get a feedbacky kind of sound. The lead guitar in this song is a pretty good representation of the kind of sound I want to make: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rR6vzsqF88 CPL593H fucked around with this message at 09:34 on Aug 21, 2011 |

Thumposaurus posted:Removing the shielding will just make it noisier(not in a good way) it might even start picking up radio signals(that can be kinda cool). Well I know that trick already, but thanks for your response. I was hoping for a way to make the guitar so it's just more prone to doing that randomly. Come to think of it, the shielding on this guitar may not be the greatest because it does pick up radio signals when I use it with a certain pedal (Germanium OD). On one occasion I got some weird Japanese station and another time it was some guy preaching about Jesus. It was kind of cool.

Is there any reliable online price guide (that's free to use) that can tell me what a vintage guitar is worth? I've googled quite a bit and everything brings me to places to buy books or subscribe to a service. I find ebay is not the best way to get a general idea what something is worth because there's a whole lot of price gouging on everything there.
