From a while back, and I apologize if this has been answered already...

Amazingly, Windows Media Player will slow down tracks to 50% speed. To do this, go to the menu bar in media player: Play -> Play Speed -> Slow

A more robust option that I use is BestPractice:

http://bestpractice.sourceforge.net

It has more sophisticated slow down options, as well as the ability to do looping over a particular phrase. And it's free :)
I haven't gotten a chance to play around with this much, but it looks fantastic. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm looking at replacing the pickups in my Ibanez AM-73 (semi-hollowbody). How much of a necessity is it to replace the electronics apart from the pickups? I understand that pickup replacement is a pain in the rear end, and if I wouldn't see much benefit from replacing the pots, I'd prefer to tear things up as little as possible.

Speaking of which, you might look into the Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow line. Even the super cheap ones are built quite well and sound pretty decent. The AS93 exists halfway between a Casino and a 335– full hollow but with regular humbuckers.

Okay, that feels like a whole lot of unsolicited advice so I'll stop. Just make sure you know exactly what you want before buying either a Casino or 335 style guitar.
I wholly second the Ibanez Artcore recommendation. I couldn't be happier with my AM73, and it's their lower end version. It feels great, and has gotten nothing but compliments from others as well. It's sort of the ES-339 equivalent, so it's a little smaller, but has that great semi-hollow sound.

I have a Vox AC15 that seems like it may have a grounding issue - maybe someone here can help me diagnose it. With guitar 1, I get a strong buzz through the amp if I'm not touching a metal part. Guitar 1 also has no issues when played through other amps. Guitar 2 has no buzz through the AC15 (apart from regular single coil hum). My bass also has a minor amount of buzz through the AC15 that goes away when I touch metal, but not nearly to the same extent as guitar 1.

My initial thought is that there's something wrong with the input jack on the AC15 - it's a little wobbly, and I thought it might be the source of the grounding issue, but the experience with guitar 2 is stumping me. Any ideas?

Are the other well-behaved amps plugged into the same socket as your Vox when you test them?
Yes, I made sure to try it in the exact same socket - I had the same thought.

Is there any difference between USB-MIDI adapters? I'm curious about messing around with a keyboard and my computer, and realized that I should probably have some way to connect them. It looks like I can spend $4-60+ and I'm not really sure what the differences would be for the different prices.

I'm not the biggest lyrics guy either, but something that's been helping me out lately is something I learned about David Byrne's writing style. He does rough takes where he just sounds out the vowel sounds and/or consonants he thinks sounds right with the music. Maybe he makes up nonsense words or phrases, sort of like scatting but it can be even less defined. Then he goes back and figures out actual lyrics that fit those sounds. This lends itself to coming up with those phrases that are open to a lot of interpretation, because he'll come up with stuff he never would have if he were taking a more literal approach.
He talks about this in his book How Music Works, which I really enjoyed. It’s part memoir, part just general musings on music history, why certain styles of music have certain characteristics, and things he finds interesting.

About the time the original iMac came out, 1999 or so, there were a series of "flat panel speakers" that came out, they were black and uh, about 4x5" and maybe 3mm thick, I think they were about $250 at the time

I can't find any mention of them online, does anybody know what I'm talking about? I remember they were sold at CompUSA for at least a year

I think you're thinking of Monsoon speakers - looks like there were a few different versions. I hadn't thought about them in years, but I absolutely remember them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ipZtossPyM

I was recently reading about Anthony Jackson, and his opinion that the electric bass really should be a 6 string instrument, because it's part of the guitar family, not the classical bass family. I'm not sure I'm convinced, but it's definitely not set in stone, especially since the electric bass is such a relatively new instrument.

quote:

Why is four [strings] the standard and not six? As the lowest-pitched member of the guitar family, the instrument should have had six strings from the beginning. The only reason it had four was because Leo Fender was thinking in application terms of an upright bass, but he built it along guitar lines because that was his training. The logical conception for the bass guitar encompasses six strings.

I will also say - and maybe this is heretical - I don't really 'get', or like, five-string basses. Maybe I've just never heard one through a proper amp setup but it seems to me that enormous low B string doesn't really sound like anything good at all. It's too low for the fundamental to really come through (believe me, I like sub bass, it's just not there) so all you get is attack and this unpleasant metallic harmonic series. I've argued this at length with my jazz guy friend who loves it. I think it sounds like dogshit. Unless you've got some creative use of distortion going on, I probably don't want to hear your five-string bass.
tbf, a lot of jazz guys seem to love really terrible sounding bass tones, though they're usually on the other end of the fretboard.
