Can anyone tell me off-hand what type of hamster I have here? It's definitely dwarf-sized, but I don't know enough about the various subspecies. Tried to google it, but only got more and more confused. And can I safely assume it's female from the lack of obvious gonads? I've only had syrians, rats and gerbils and none of those leave any room for doubt.

I was thinking about getting some degus and browsing for cages, and I see the recommended bar spacing for degus is 6mm (1/4 inch). That just seems absurdly tiny, is that really necessary or would a nice 9mm (1/3 inch) be just as good? Surely they can't possibly squeeze through that. Anyone?

Goddammit, my degu just died, leaving behind 6 four-and-a-half week old puppies. Supposedly they need 6 weeks to be weaned and 8 weeks before they should be separated from the mother... They eat solid food, so hopefully they'll survive and hopefully they don't end up too screwed up in the head... Does anyone know anything about this? Is there anything I can do besides the obvious stuff to improve their chances?

You say you're staying up until 5 am, does that mean you're in the same room and the light is on? If no then I think you should be worried. He could just be stressed from the pet store I guess, but in my experience if they're not out and running on the wheel during the night it's usually a sign of illness. If yes, then he's probably just confused as hell, because he thinks it's time to get up but doesn't know wtf because it's still light outside.
