This thread is a little dead, but hopefully I will get some useful information. I'm moving to Perth for two years in about a month's time for academic purposes (I'm following my PhD supervisor to his new job). Job-wise I'm obviously secure, including my funding, so I'm not too worried about things like that; they're even covering my medical insurance. My visa is sorted and I have accommodation for 3 weeks from when I arrive so that should hopefully give me enough time to find a place to rent. I was hoping to get a bit of information about what life in Perth is like. Most people tend to talk about Sydney and Melbourne, so I've found it difficult to get an idea of what it's like in Perth. I guess I just want to be able to get a reasonably good social life going and not get too bogged down with work and feel lonely!

NoArmedMan posted:Pretty much this. I really like Perth, it's a nice city and the beaches are awesome, don't expect a big city nightlife but that said once you've settled you'll find plenty of places to have a drink and to eat with workmates. Thanks for the information -- I really looking forward to visiting the beaches, actually; and my workplace is right next to a pretty large park! I also plan on doing quite a lot of hiking and generally exploring while I'm down there. I'm not too fussed about the lack of pubs, because let's face it, I am down there to work. How easy would you say it is to pick up a social circle though? I do enjoy hanging out with workmates, but it would be nice to unwind with a different social circle from time to time. I was thinking of taking up a sport or joining a local club.

Frogmanv2 posted:Yeah I live in Perth. Awesome! As I posted a while back I'm moving to Perth in October for about 2 years. What are some fun things to do / cool places to hang out? Also, open question: is it cheaper for me to buy a Blackberry in the UK and buy a data plan in Australia, or to just buy everything over there?

Fairly standard things, I guess. I like to socialise, go out to pubs (occasionally clubs), see live music, dine out, etc. I've been told there's a pretty good blues festival in Perth ever year that I am definitely going to go to. Freemantle sounds pretty awesome too. I'm also seriously considering taking up scuba diving while down there. I'm going to be working in an academic setting and I guess I just want to be able to make friends outside of my workplace so I don't spend all day every day with the same people talking about science and work.

Frogmanv2 posted:Main nightlife precinct is Northbridge, which is north of the city center itself. Its full of pubs and nightclubs and restaurants and drunk people. I tend not to go in there, unless its for a specific reason. Im too old and have been doing out for too long to put up with that many drunk jackasses in one place. There are a whole buttload of smaller entertainment areas like west leederville, subiaco, fremantle that are good to go to and there are pubs spotted around the place. Get urbanspoon to check out where you can eat. Fantastic, thanks so much for the information! I quite like electronic music too, so I'll keep an eye out on those sites. The scuba diving stuff is good to know too, as I'll be going into it as a complete newbie. edit: Another random question: what are some good internet service providers? Again, thanks for the suggestions. I was prompted to ask because of one my colleagues that moved down to Perth early was complaining about not being able to get decent uncapped internet for a reasonable price at his house. I am going to start packing this weekend; exciting times!

I've been in Perth for almost a week now, and I'm trying to settle in. I've already been rejected from one mobile phone company because they didn't like the fact that I had come from overseas (my credit check failed, apparently?) and spent far too much money in a pub, but at least the weather is better than in Scotland. Does anyone know any good websites besides Gumtree for finding a house/flat to share? All the real estate websites have unoccupied houses for rent which I can't really afford at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. This would be a lot easier if I had a mobile phone, but I'm still waiting on bloody Vodafone to get back to me about processing my order. Why is it so hard to give my money to these people for 24 months?

The Pinnacles are kinda neat! Like a miniature version of Cappadocia or the Valley of the Moon

I don't think so! These are in WA, 3 hours' drive up north from Perth. Right along the coast, in Nambung National Park. I have roughly a day's worth of free time in Sydney in the middle of this month. What should I do? Also, what are some reasonably safe, fun and cheap hotels/hostels to crash at?

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll probably spend most of my time doing indoorsy/cultural things as I'm not the biggest nature fan (I know...). I've fired off an equiry to Wake Up! I reckon the tours they organise should keep me fairly well occupied. I'd love to be able to spend more time in Syndey, but on the 19th I'm driving up to the Blue Mountains to go stare at some galaxies through a big telescope. 2ndclasscitizen posted:I hope you've got some warm clothes, weather is utter shite at the moment. Ha, I've just moved to Perth after six years in Scotland, I'm well stocked up on warm clothes! Montalvo fucked around with this message at 08:21 on Dec 7, 2011 |

I'm mostly looking forward to hanging out with the locals at the remote village locals in the Blue Mountains and hearing all about the harvest.

If you're out East, go and see the Warrumbungles. They are gorgeous.

I need to hang out in central Sydney from about noon until 6PM on Friday. I've got a large rucksack that I'd like to leave somewhere for the day -- does the Central train station have left luggage lockers? I'm also willing to spend some coin at a youth hostel if they're willing to hold onto my bag for me as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I ended up leaving them at a backpacker's travel agency just up from the corner of George Street and Rawson Place. $10 for the day, if anyone else is curious.
