I guess it depends on what you can get your hands on when you get here. I've met people who have done that with great success, but I've met just as many who have broken their budgets on repairs. All you need is a US driver's license. Driving on the other side is really mentally exhausting, especially at first, so I wouldn't plan really long days on the car right off the bad.
