Annoying. Look up "color space" and "color profiling". The calibration the previous poster spoke of was getting an external device to "calibrate" your monitor's color, which sets it to a standard so that people see the same colors on different monitors. It sounds more like you were having a "color space" issue, where you are getting muted colors from switching between color spaces. I'm no wiz at this, but for instance if I load a RAW file in photoshop it will be AdobeRBG. When I go to save for web, it converts to sRBG and looks washed out. You need to convert the file to the sRBG colorspace or you will have issues like loosing intensity. Ask in the gear thread for people who know what the hell they are talking about to help you out.
