:siren: we have an irc channel! if you like electronic music then come join the fun in #electronic on irc.synirc.com :siren:

Howdy everyone, it's time for a new thread! This thread is for discussing all the various forums of electronic house music and related genres, such as: House, Electro, Electrohouse, Synthpop, Electropop, French House, Fidget House, Italo nu Disco, Discohouse, bloghouse bangers and much much more. What this thread is not for is: Trance, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Industrial, as they all have their own threads.

So you may be wondering, what exactly is house music? Well the name is up for debate as to the exact orgins of it, but all house music is characterized by an often simple 4/4 time signature with a bass drum and kick present throughout the entire track. It's that bass'n'kick that keeps us dancing. Oh and I forgot to mention, dancing is what this music is all about.

The first thing coming to your mind is probably everyone's favourite Daft Punk. They were one of the main people in France in the late 90s and early 00s to bring commercial house music to North America. You and your dog should already be a fan of the fantastic robot duo, but there is so much more.

If you are familiar with Daft Punk, chances are you are familiar with the following:

Justice

You've heard their 2007 masterstroke that is Cross, but you may not have known that they did the score for Dior Homme's 2009 Spring fashion show titled Planispheré.

But enough of Daft Punk and Justice, we've all heard them over and over, what we want is bloghouse. Now bloghouse itself isn't really a genre, it's just the moniker used to describe where the track was discovered and first posted. You see, in the electrobloghousewhatever scene, normal distribution methods for artists are virtually non-existent unless you've got a real nice commercial record label behind your back, and a lot of these artists don't

So without further adieu here are some links to aide you in your searches for good sounding tunes (or 'choons' as they are known):

Now this brings us to the discussion part of the thread. This thread is for discussing and dissing new tracks that come out, reminscing of the tracks of yesteryear that made us dance so good, and for exposing those new to the genre to fun and danceable tracks.

Personally, I am a huge fan of french house and Italo nu disco, two genres to emerged from France and Italy around 1996. They feature cheesy sweeping synths and filters with wonderful beats and unbelievable drops, so I will share for you some of my favorites/reposts from other threads.

subtle reminders: do not poo poo this thread up with retarded arguments like we did in the danger thread, it doesn't matter who likes or dislikes deadmau5 but keep him out of the thread because his lackluster trance is not welcome here. This is for talking and discussing the good tunes we love to dance to. No stupid bickering and godhelp Threatis if you poo poo up this thread I will have your head! also, talk about leaks but not where you got the leak, make sure if you post a track that it's legit, we dont want to have a :filez: problem on our hands. Also, this thread is not for discussing how cute or hot the electropop girls are, they're all good looking and that's the end of it! Also, please try and have content with your posts! don't just post a bunch of youtubes for us to listen to, give us a reason to hear it! I realize i did this in the OP but that's just a jumping off point!

:siren: This is not a youtube dumping thread, I repeat, this is not a youtube dumping thread. Keep it about the music and discussion and refrain from posting just a youtube link to your favourite song, or chances are you will get probated! :siren:

And yeah I usually tune in to Kissy Sellout's show and picked up his album. I found that his album had a lot of fodder tracks to it but they are all delightfully bangin'. I was actually surprised when Kissy played a track from Leonardus, a rather unknown but gaining in popularity french-filter-house producer from Holland who makes some of the best filter house I have heard since the Montmarte days. As far as I'm concerned disco is no where near dead, and Leonardus has revived it: Leonardus - Smile

Why was there a new thread created? Electro-pop and house/techno/synth are sufficiently differentiated to warrant seperate threads. We all know this is just going to turn into a house re-re-re-re-mix thread. As a fan of electro-pop, I'm really not interested in looking through page after page of MSTRKRFT and Chromeo mixes...

The whole reason for the electro-pop thread was that its a genre that tends to get completely overlooked in threads such as these.

No need to fret Cyril, I am definitely with you on the synth and electropop. Infact I have some for you right now! Joypop - Six To Six! Joypop is essentially unknown to pretty much everywhere and this is the only track they've made to date, but an EP is coming out soon.

I must remind everyone that this thread is for all sorts 4/4 electronic music (synth and electro pop definitely fall under this) so do not feel ashamed or disheartened to post your favourite (but please please please tell us why they are your favourite) tracks. This is not a Danger thread, plus, I love synth/electropop so much that I won't let these bloghouse bangers take control of the thread and ruin our fun.

CHRISTS FOR SALE posted:

Daft Punk are probably the single most influential group in electronic music, perhaps tied with Aphex Twin or Kraftwerk. Anyway, they're amazing but NOT the originators of house music in the least bit. They also were not responsible for bringing commercial house music to America, as it was actually INVENTED here (in Chicago to be exact), predominantly by gay black people. What they did originate was the performance of original House music with live instrumentation and sequencers. With this setup, Daft Punk moved past the boring world of DJing into some actual semblance of musicianship. Instead of pressing buttons and simply cueing up parts of their songs, they set up the whole performance in such a way that they could improvise almost anything.

Anyone who's even marginally interested in how House and Techno formed should watch Pump Up The Volume, a BBC-made documentary about how dance music, and later the rave scene, began. It is very Brit-centric, because it was made by the BBC, but there's a lot of the documentary that has to do with the American scene as well.
Pump Up The Volume (1/2)
Pump Up The Volume (2/2)

Oh don't get me wrong man, I am well aware of the origins of house music from wonderful chi-town soul to the new york paradise garage disco sound (RIP Larry Levan). I should have specified that Daft Punk was one of the first in north america to bring major commercial success with french house music. I obviously just chose Daft Punk as a starting off point for new people getting in to the genre since Daft Punk is most often the first group people start with when they begin their foray in to house music. Aside from the electronic New Wave movement of the 80s there was not much in terms of electronic house music (that compared to the success of Daft Punk) in North America until Daft Punk came along and garnered major commercial success. No need for us to get passive aggressive and bickering over where house started or by who, it's all good music, let's enjoy it :)

But hey, I'm sure the most of us all extremely well versed in Daft Punk already, so enough about them until the Tron OST comes out.

Also the BBC docu you posted is great as well. There is documentary called Maestro which covers the origin of disco and later house music centered around the Paradise Garage and other clubs in the NY scene during the 70s and 80s. The first part is right here. Definitely recommended viewing for all.

And now, some shameless self promotion!

There's a remix contest going on by Uncovered Label based out of Ottawa (oh no threatis!) to remix Nima Saeedi's Yo Pass. Anyone is welcome to try, all the info and samples are available on facebook here

The original track is here available for you to listen here: http://soundcloud.com/uncovered/nima-saeedi-yo-pass

Unfortunately it's not based on votes so I can't get you guys to rig the contest for me, but here is the entry I whipped up for the contest. Nima Saeedi - Yo Pass (Zcientist Remix). I produce under Zcientist for the record! Hopefully someone likes it, and hopefully I win. The prize is getting on your track on beatport & the retail release so I am pretty stoked. Have a listen!

edit: Oh and I remixed Fake Blood - Mars too, in a slightly eurodance fashion, which is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ7yR0LHmJw and fun and not to be taken too seriously :)

and the reason christ's for sale hasn't been berated for his moderately dumb post is because that would put us back to square one, like the Danger hellhole thread before

You can definitely talk about minimal/ambient in this thread. You totally can't talk about your minimal stuff here, het's orders! I intended this to be a catchall for most electronic genres but minimal and ambient do not fit in with our 4/4 partytime.

And all you electropop folks just need to come out of the woodwork and start posting about your favourite electropop songs and such. By all means do not feel intimidated by the phiz bloghouse & bangers crew (they're all jerks anyway!). I may add a bunch more electropop stuff to the OP here soon to clarify. I think i've got a little something for everyone with this post.

First up is something for my synth pals, Tycho. He's an IDM (god I hate that term) artist from San Fran. He recently released a track to the blogs called Coastal Brake. It's an easy listening ride down synthpop lane. He doesn't have many albums but Sunrise Projector and Past is Prologue are both very good and worth picking up if you're in to this sort of synth/idm material.

I'm sure some of you have heard Dre Skull's I Want You, but have you heard the remixes? AC Slater remixed this fun and fidgetty remix that I cannot stop moving my body to, there's just enough wobble & fidget to keep you dancing throughout the whole song. You can find more remixes of I Want You on the tubes.

And for some italo love, I've got a 1928 remix of College's track Can You Kiss Me First. As a huge fan of nudisco this track really gets me moving (you are dancing to this music are you not? you are a fool if you're just sitting still). Another track in similar vein is a vs with Erik Hassle and Penguin Prison. What they do to you is Hurtful.

Mooqee, a relatively unknown breakbeat artist from the UK who has collab'd with breaks master Krafty Kuts several times, remixed everyone's favourite Eric Prydz track, Pjanoo (Mooqee edit). If you're in to breaks at all then this should be right up your alley, also if you like breaks then you should check out my good friends at http://nsbradio.co.uk a 24/7 breaks & breakbeat radio station.

And now to break out the bloghouse! Combo's hit Crystal Ocean is a catchy tune but remixer extraordinaire Wolfchild got ahold of it and turn it in to a grittier bangin' version Combo - Crystal Ocean (Wolfchild Remix). It makes me literally want to swim in an ocean of crystals, and also dance a lot. Chinese producers Nhan & Taan got ahold of Malente & Dex's hit Hyperactive and turned it in to one banging dancefloor destroyer. Just look at how awesome they look:

And now to finish this post off with one of my favourite remixers, Redial. He has remixed the most absolutely devastating Killers remix that I have ever heard in my life. The Killers - Somebody Told Me (Redial Goes Oldschool Remix) Make sure your subs are up for this, you wont regret it I'm serious, turn this poo poo up. He recently also remixed some Empire Of The Sun which im sure you aussies have heard enough of already which was featured on deathelectro here or on my youtube here.

alright that's enough from me for now! It may be unavoidable to just post youtube links to songs but it's kinda our only option with these genres. Just keep the content good and we're on our way to having a happy thread where we all get along!

I hope he means Digitalism because there is no way that could apply to Shinichi!

Shinichi Osawa is one of my favourite producers. He is huge in japan and asia along with a lot of other asian electro acts (80kidz, Q;indivi, etc) and has such a great style.

Everything he's done lately has been great. I took this La Roux remix from his Sounds of Summer 09 mix because it isn't available anywhere else to listen to, it's an easy going guitar mix that is nothing like his other work.

However, some of the more recent stuff he's been doing includes being on the HOUSE*DISNEY (amazing compilation by the way) and collaborating with his good friends The Young Punx, which can be seen here The Young Punx - "Rock Star (Understand)" [Shinichi Osawa Remix] (Asian Kung-Fu Generation)
.
Other than that, his LP from lastyear, The One and it's sequential remix album The One+ is absolutely loving stellar and textbook electro for those looking to get their moves on. His Star Guitar remix is probably the his most well known work here stateside.

Edit: Every 4-7 days I cull all the tracks that were posted during the week on blogs and aggregate them to my youtube account and blog, so if you're looking for a direct supply of bangers' then head on over to https://www.curbcheckyouhavethecon.blogspot.com to get your listening on. Passion Pit is pretty standard indie isnt it, besides their use of synths i dont get why they would be in this thread (lots of bands use synths?)

They shouldn't but their remixes should be!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qUqbPJmZiY Passion Pit - Little Secrets (Hey Champ Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cig2SibPTbY Passion Pit - The Reeling (Yasutaka Nakata Capsule Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c39ueu0hx6U Passion Pit - To Kingdom Come (Grum Remix)

Personally I cannot get enough of GRUM, and the Hey Champ remix is spot on Hey Champ material.

I think you actually mean the Eric Wareheim directed video for Major Lazer - Keep It Going Louder is the best video of the year http://vimeo.com/7652564

also it is basically my favorite single of the year and got slept on by nearly everyone because they were too busy stanning over "Pon De Floor"

Jesus Christ that video. Lady Gaga or La Roux can't even top that. You just wrinkled my brain so hard.

Reasons why you should be listening to Edwin Van Cleef:

quote:

Edwin van Cleef commented on their status:

"I'm hoping to get Susan Boyle and Basshunter to collaborate on a remix"

It's not my fault the electropop people don't get house music and the current hipster/electro/house movement, but :shobon:

in other news: tracks for you that I have been digging lately!

Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy (GRUM Remix)
Digitalfoxglove - Brassionata
Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrel - Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Mikey Mic Remix) as featured on https://www.noiseporn.com
Dragonette - Fixin To Thrill (Cavaliers of Fun and Anagramme Remix) <-- LOVE this so much

So what should it be? An RSS feed of discobelle and youtubes, no discussion?

It should be some discussion about the music itself and not why you care so much about why someone on the internet likes the music they like. We've all got different tastes, no one in this thread is better than anyone else, it's just music. Take your scoffing and smuggy poo poo back to phiz if you want to keep running this thread in to the ground.

edit: the whole idea of this thread is to expose new people to the genre so hating on scrubs is not going to be tolerated. help them, don't hinder them.

Just listened to this mix and it was really awful. Your flow is awkward, mixing is non-existant, and your track selection would impress only the most entry level of listeners. Would not recommend this as a 'realdude' mix to anyone.

Aww dang you fell in to one of my phiz traps, that mix was intentionally mixed awfully and the track selection is godawful. It gets them riled up in the phiz DJ thread.

However here's some newer actual mixes of mine for you to hear, with actual skills applied: http://www.mediafire.com/?mumzj1jjn0y or http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RD5KWHNA

sorry but unless you were candyflipping while djing and playing from the wrong crate i'm not going to waste my time listening to one of your "actual skills applied" mixes

all I do is fakepost in phiz so you probably shouldn't take anything I say in there seriously.

fakeposting or not your mixes are atrocious, in your electrosential mix your first track goes on for 5 1/2 minutes and runs out into the intro of your second track

fact is you're clueless. you put up these mixes thinking they were hot poo poo when you cant even get the djing part down right. people call you out on it and then you make up poo poo excuses instead of just saying "thanks for the feedback, im still learning" which is actually respectable

I've never made up a poo poo excuse for the mixes i've actually tried to make good, so I don't know what you mean by that, but thanks for the feedback, i'm still learning.

So you can either listen to the whole thing and give me proper constructive criticism which i'll gladly accept or you can listen to the first 6 minutes and gently caress off

I don't want this to be an extended argument, so just drop the whole "Oh I wasn't really trying then"/"Haha you were pranked by my terrible mix" shtick. Even if people were buying it, it would still basically be bragging about making a shitpost in NMD (albeit one that took a weird amount of effort), which I am not cool with.

Sure thing het, I hadn't planned on making anymore anyway.

Agreed totally. The spread of music in this thread is just too wide. People click links expecting one sound and find something very different. It's a lot more fun when we have smaller threads with more narrow genres that let people find things to their taste than this smashing of everyone together.

It's all the same music under the hood.
