I've been watching the nitro's from the begining on youtube recently due to my exposure from 92-98 was purely that which was shown on Worldwide. Other than the first Nitro, until the NWO showed up the majority of shows were pretty terrible consisting of a tag match, a Savage or Luger squash and a main event involving the stars. Its amazing how much one hot angle really ignited the entire product, because from the moment Scott Hall arrived on the first two hour show everything became that much better.

Schiavone hated Heenan. According to Bobby, Schiavone held him and Jessie Ventura responsible for getting him released from his short run with the WWF. Ironically enough he would end up working with both in WCW. Tony and Tenay didn't get on well backstage either down purely to Tony thinking that Tenay was '[Schiavone] ten years ago.'

He did get in some good calls along the way though, and when he wasn't in full on shill mode could call a match far better than any of the other WCW play by play guys. He actually sounded like a legitimate sports broadcaster which made him stand out from anyone else in the industry. On the other hand he often said a great deal of stupid things that undermined this.

Schiavone's high point was his comentary on one of the first Sting vs Flair matches. He was on fire that night having done all his homework on the history of both men and their careers to that point. He even recognised spots before they did them and added a great deal to the match. He also has one of the all time great calls to his name in 'Hulk Hogan, you can go to hell.'

In the end he stayed in the industry for too long, past the point where he was bitter and jaded with the promotion and his place in wrestling. He seems a lot happier calling baseball now. That said his one night run in TNA as a heel was fun.

The best Larry call was following Eddie Guerrero's return from his drunk driving crash which nearly killed him. Larry spent a minute and a half ranting about the evils of the motor industry propagander about wearing safety belts and that Eddie survived his crash by using his wrestling knowledge to frog splash through the window.

The worst of it was that for a lot of the undercard the matches were all they had. There were a lot of wrestlers in WCW that weren't involved in storylines for long stretches and by not paying attention to their matches it only served to underline how unimportant they were. The best of the attitude era was that everyone in the WWF had a storyline regardless of how dumb it was. Russo tried at least to give everyone something to do in WCW during his time, he just had no quality control.

The NWO actually took over the show 4 times in the year running upto the December 22nd show. Each time they got a small ratings boost from it. They had even had NWO Souled out, the PPV equivilent of it, starting with the NWO riding to the stadium on the back of garbage truck. So on paper I can see why it seemed a good idea. The execution just backfired.

Souled out was a terrible show it must be said, but something so different that its worth a watch for the trainwreck.

Never let it be forgotten that the reason for the start of the Raven DDP feud was that the flock crashed a Stuck Mojo video taping. Sure it was later retconned to be about their rivalry over being Jake Roberts favoured student, but to begin with it was because of this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoQB8JACkuI

You have to remember that WCW treated this as being a legit invasion of a music video and not as being part of the 'videos script' which begs the question: what was the video going to be beforehand? 5 minutes of DDP standing half naked in a ring?

The Hogan spin on the Jericho situation was that he liked him alot and felt he should've been better used by WCW, but it was that terrible backstage politician Kevin Nash that held him down. On the otherhand Nash says that he was pushing for him to have a better role, shown by how still didn't bury him on his way out when he had the book and that they shared an agent.

However the best take on the situation was by Scott Steiner, who said in his shoot that they all wanted him in the NWO, 'which was the best sign that they wanted to kill his heat.' I cannot recommend Steiners shoot video enough.

They started the Jericho in the NWO angle by having the giant win him the TV title, and then look out for him in his first few title defences. According to Jericho's book, when Jericho told Bischoff he didn't want to join the group as he didn't want to be one of twenty guys standing around twiddling their thumbs in the background, instead of changing the booking they just kept the angle without ever explaining why the Giant would be looking out for Jericho even in favour of his NWO team mates.

Exactly this. He's entirely respectful and well spoken. He even brings up that if even if he hated Russo's booking, what was he going to do about it: he was getting a legit push out of it which was more than he could say for any other booker.

The Buff thing comes from him being forced to pair up with him, and finding him just plain annoying. Rick Steiner really likes him, but Scott prefered to travel with guys like Lance Storm. Bagwell went into business for himself on a show cutting a promo burying Steiner, so he stiffed him in the ring. But he draws a distinction between him and his brother who would just stiff the poo poo out of the lower card for no reason. Scott always had a reason.

Whipwreck was hired by Eric Bischoff at the same time they hired the Sandman. The entire 'Hardcore Hak/James' run was stupidity of the worst degree, not helped by WCW hiring a porn star to be Hak's valet/Ravens sister and the entire Raven as Ferris Bueller angle.

Both Hak and Whipwreck ended up getting injured in the Junkyard battle royale at Bash at the Beach, which cost $100,000 to put on and was only advertised on the Thunder before hand. It should be noted few people picked up on Hak getting injured in the match because the crack camera crew managed to avoid showing him at all in the match. The only reason anyone knows he was in the drat thing is because he has a scar to show from the match.

Seriously for everything you can say about WCW in the Russo era, that which went just before it was just as bad if not worse in someways.

Stupid as it was, it did get Raven over and hiring a porn star was perfect for those two. Raven has said in shoot interviews that he was amazed at how well fans responded to those stupid vignettes that he thought would sink his career.

This is true. It also led into the Saturn, Raven and Kanyon freebird style tag team that was insanely hot for the short term. Considering the history the three had before that point the crowd loved the idea of those three being tag champs together.

Then being WCW they moved the angle onto the New Jersey Triad. That was a lot less successful as it was just three guys. Or to be fairer to the angle DDP and two guys.

A few highlights of that tournament:

Madusa's first match against Meng was a punishment for her refusal to wrestle in a dressing gown match the week before (itself a shot at the WWE for their use of tits and rear end). She was squashed in under a minute while Tony and Heenan alternate between using Owen voices at her being destroyed, and then finding it hillarious.

Madusa won her second match against Evan Karagias by rubbing her tits in his face in the corner and allowing him to grope her. When he was overcome by this she mounted him and gave him a big french kiss for the 3 count.

Sadly Madusa faced Benoit in the second round and got murdered. Well except she didn't. She went toe to toe with Benoit for a good portion of the match until he took control. Karagias then ran in to protest the man on woman violence to the referee. The referee then beat up Karagias for comming in the ring. While the ref was beating up the wrestler, Jeff Jarrett came in to the ring to attack Benoit for 'commiting violence against a woman like they do up north.' The ref turns round and sees that Benoit is down and DQ's Madusa. Madusa attacks Jarrett and clears him out of the ring, where he picks up the mic to tell her that 'he screwed her out of the WCW title.'

The story behind this angle is quite amusing. This was during the peroid between Eric Bischoff being shitcanned and Vince Russo being hired. During this time the poor guys who were writing the show were being forced to maintain the status quo by the top brass. Everyone knew there would be a new appointment being made as a long term head writer/booker but at this point no one knew Russo was in the frame. There was a booking meeting where the writers were told that they had to maintain the status quo, BUT they also had to deliver surprises.

This angle was their response. A surprise that changed nothing.

I laugh but isn't this the reason he had all the luchador guys in WCW unmask?

Strangely enough Russo was never responsible for a luchador unmasking. Juventud was the first to lose his mask in a mask vs title match against Chris Jericho at Superbrawl 98, which was intended to repackage him as 'never surrender Juventud Guerrera.' The idea behind the new gimmick was that Juventud was so tough that he wouldn't submit to any submission hold ever, instead he would pass out in about the same amount of time that most people quit. This was down to Bischoff.

Rey Mystereo was up next a year later at Superbrawl 99. The match that cost him his mask was a tag match between Konnan and Rey and the Outsiders of Nash and Hall in which Reys mask was put up against Miss Elizabeth's hair. This was Eric's idea, but the credit for the booking goes to Nash who felt that it 'put Rey over on another level being able to hang with main eventers.' After that match Rey had a tour of Mexico planned where he was schedualed to have a mask vs hair match to lose it for the Mexican auidence. Word got out in Mexico about the loss to Nash (due to Nitro airing in Mexico) and he became instantly one of the biggest heels in the country and recieved countless death threats. That match was changed to hair vs hair, despite Rey being pretty much bald.

On the other hand, the last guy to lose his mask in WCW, Psychosis lost his mask four times to Rey Mystereo in a tour of Mexico in September of 99. On September 27's nitro he would put the mask on the line in America against Billy Kidman's hair. Shockingly Kidman won. This was four days before Russo was hired to take over at WCW, so again he can't take the blame for this one.

I would swear blind that in Bischoffs book[...]he takes credit for rey unmasking and maintains that it was a great idea and that he cant understand why anyone would want to see luchadores wearing masks.

Bischoff definately made the call to unmask Rey. He claims now that it was due to him finding the mask unmarketable, but at the time there were a lot of rumours that it was punishment for Rey's behavior on the radio and with live crowds. For what its worth Konnan thinks that Rey was being punished in part for Jericho's impending departure, and it was an attempt to make him less desirable for the WWE at a time when there was a lot of guys looking to leave the company. The details were left to Nash, who instinctively decided the best man to be responsible for Rey losing his mask would be himself.

As a side note Bischoff contradicts the gently caress out of himself in that book. In one of the early chapters he talks about how bringing in the masked wrestlers brought a new distinctive dimension to WCW, by the end of the book he argues that it was a marketing nightmare. This is depite the LWO t-shirts being one of the biggest sellers of 98, even when the angle only lasted for two months.

They felt that it was being used as retaliation by WCW for their complaints over Konnan and Rey's repeated use of the word 'human being' on nitro on the way to the ring. The Hogan/Goldberg match was always intended to be a dark match for the crowd in attendance. Various sources have said that the idea was pitched by Hogan as a means to show him as the top draw of the company at one of their biggest gates and also to get him over as a company man who was willing to put over Goldberg, all be it in a manner not shown on TV.

About a week before the Georgia Dome match Bischoff made the decision to make the match the focus of the show. In his book he says that that nitro was more important than any PPV because of the number of Turner executives that would be in attendence so he wanted it to have the feel of being the biggest card of the year. When Hogan found out he was unhappy, but had already pledged to put Goldberg over in a non title match. So this was one occasion where it looked like someone had out played him at the political game. It's rumoured that he had the final laugh as he managed to get a verbal agreement that when the time came for someone to end the streak it would be him. How true this was is anyones guess as when it came down to it the Streak was ended by Kevin Nash who was the biggest backstage rival of Hogan.

The event drew a big gate. Nitro won the ratings battle. Goldberg went over both Scott Hall and Hogan in the same night giving him the world title. All was well.

However from that point on Goldberg and the world title was booked as an afterthought to the big story of the NWO break up. His title defences rarely went on last and he was actually given a number of PPV's off. The ratings boost of that weeks show faded away by the next week.

More importantly looking back at ticket sales for that show, there was no reason to make the match a world title match. A week before the show even happened it was sold out. Bischoff retcons this as saying that sales had stagnated and that the title match helped put attendance over the edge. Of course ticket sales had stagnated: there were no more tickets to sell. The show drew good ratings but as many commentators have pointed out there was lost revenue from the potential of a PPV match between Goldberg and Hogan. Considering the two never met in any match on PPV it can only be seen as a missed opportunity.
