Here's the thing about that promo: Hulk and Russo agreed to it. It was a total sham. But Russo I guess dug a little too deep, and Hulk got offended, so he left the building with the belt, left WCW for good, and sued Russo.

Jerusalem posted:The worst was when Goldberg walked out in the middle of a match, the commentators explained that this wasn't in their script and that now the two wrestlers left in the ring (Nash and Steiner I think) would have to improvise a finish on the fly to the scripted fake fighting going on in the ring. Goldberg "sandbagged" a Jackknife Powerbomb, which the commentators chastised him for. He leaves the ring and screams gently caress YOU at Russo, who is on the stage. Nash beats Stener with the Jackknife and the commentators laud Steiner for being a team player and going up for the powerbomb.

You're really asking what the difference is between Vince Russo saying "Everything is fake except what is happening right now (but this is also fake)" and a comedy match catered to wrestling nerds

I think all RD did was type it, Alvarez did most of the heavy lifting. I haven't read it in awhile, but I have read it a bunch of times. A great book that you will speed through.

Especially the fact that Savage put him over clean in their feud which is quite extraordinary in itself. Is it? Savage wasn't exactly a selfish guy like Hogan and Nash were. WWF's production values were garbage until 98 or so. It's REALLY apparent in some of their PPVs. Royal Rumble 97 looks awful, from the terrible lighting to the atrocious camera work. They missed more than a few eliminations iirc.

Yeah that angle had Russo's fingerprints all over it. Chiefly, Jeff Jarrett's involvement.

This is the best WCW ripoff theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzfszKuO6vA Another good one used by Hak, which made sense for him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcImqe7apBU What didn't make sense was that it was originally used by Mongo. Also Jimmy Hart wrote a number of the best WWF themes of the 80s and 90s, so he's not just a ripoff artist. Nut Bunnies fucked around with this message at 09:12 on Jan 17, 2012 |

Austin refused to work with Hall because he was extremely concerned about Hall not being able to properly protect his neck. Also HHH and Rock never worked together after the Armageddon 6-man, but I think that was largely due to circumstance and not Rock refusing to work with him anymore. Look at the timelines of what they were doing from 2001-04. They were either busy feuding with other people, filming a movie, injured, or on a different brand.

Hogan/Austin never happened because Austin rightly despises Hogan for pushing him and other young talent off of the card (and out of the company) in WCW in favor of his decrepit, washed-up friends.

The Hogan cheers were from 20 somethings who were nostalgic for Hogan. I don't think it would have been too different with Austin in there even if Rock's support wasn't exactly ironclad for the year prior. I think it was a good demonstration of the potential they blew. Hogan was overexposed, horrible, a piece of poo poo, you name it since for 7 years at that point. And the crowd didn't care because he was still Hulk Hogan and he was facing The Rock. But ohhhh we can't push the WCW guys, they have no credibility and the boys in the back will get upset that

Hirams Bitch posted:I think the difference is that people found the Rock to be really entertaining so they would cheer for him, but they were actually emotionally invested in Austin (Rock was the sizzle, but Austin was the steak). I just can't see a crowd booing Austin, even if they cheered Hogan as well. That's a good point. I think most of the animosity for Rock came from him "abandoning" wrestling to shoot movies, but I think some people were tired of his act by that point. Additionally, I wonder if there was a mentality among some fans that Rock was a mere placeholder for Austin, since Rock didn't take the big leap forward to where he was until Austin was sidelined. I didn't think that, but I could see it. Rusty Shackelford posted:He beat the Undertaker on one PPV and lost to HHH on the next PPV. That was the most Russoriffic summer. HHH wins the title from Jericho after a big return and long (lovely) feud. Oh but Hogan got a big reaction at WM and has a lot of momentum, so let's give him the title. Oh poo poo, Hogan bombed because he's getting cheers for something that's basically a sideshow act, give it to Undertaker. Oh poo poo we need to put the title on Brock but can't have the Undertaker be beaten clean, have Rock pin Kurt Angle to win the title since he's going to film a movie anyway. OK now the title is on Brock but OH poo poo WE NEED TO GIVE HHH A TITLE!!!!!!! Nut Bunnies fucked around with this message at 21:11 on Jan 23, 2012 |

IIRC the American version of Bret's book is edited down from the original Canadian version, so you may want to seek that one out. Not sure if it's anything substantial, though.

triplexpac posted:WWE is just repetitive and boring. Late WCW had World Champion David Arquette, people getting buried in the desert, monster trucks, Vince Russo's popemobile, a dude kissing a donkey's butt, Viagra on a Pole... so much random stuff. 97 WWF had tremendous booking, but the problem with a lot of it (especially early in the year) was that they were booking horrible wrestlers. So you had stuff like that.

The guy got it wrong on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire and I believe the quote was "And as EVERYONE knows, Belize borders MEXICO, not SPAIN."
