Hey I just wanted to pop in and ask a question. I've never used any kind of digital tablet as I could never get the "hand down here, eyes up here" coordination, and later when the Cintiqs came out, the price was astronomical to just blindly buy. Nonetheless, the past month I discovered ProCreate on the iPad, and have been loving delighted, so I was thinking about a Cintiq a bit more seriously. Fortunately it turned out that a friend of mine has one in her studio and so I was able to play around with it. What surprised me was how loving SLOW the action was. I'm talking about *here is the tip of my stylus* X         _____________ *here comes the line that I drew trailing behind*; and using it for painting was even slower. My question is this: does the speed of the Cintiq depend on the computer that it is tethered to? If I put it on a high-end PC would that lag be diminished, or is this an inherent trait of the Cintiq pad in general?

Edit: I also purchased the Hex3 Jaja stylus for use with ProCreate and god drat I'm in love with the combination.

What program did you use it in? The current version of Photoshop is slow as hell, but it works fine in Artrage and Mischief. There's a little lag, but nothing compared to what it was doing in photoshop. I'm cheap, so those are the two programs I've used it in, aside from an obsolete version of photoshop that also doesn't lag. I would love to have procreate for pc, since I loving love it.

I believe it was Sketchbook Pro.

Looks like there is a possibility of me getting a Cintiq 24HD this summer. But this also means I'll have to purchase a new computer to hook it up to (shitcanned my 7 year old imac recently, and my mini is permanently hooked up to my tv). I'm thinking that might be an opportunity to upgrading my 3 year old Macbook Air to a newer Macbook Pro and using that as my primary machine. Does anyone have any experience with the macbook pro/cintiq set up? Can the MBP be in clamshell mode and run the Cintiq?

drat, 27QHD Cintiqs seem to be rare as hen's teeth. By any chance does anyone here know of a place that sells Wacom products here in the San Francisco area?

Hmmm ok it seems like it's not actually out until early May according to online stores. I thought the QHD was already in the wild, but I guess those were just demo units.

It's already out, think there are just supply issues.

Don't have any recommendations for in-person retailers, but I got mine from NY-based B&H Photo who told me they're expecting new units at the end of May. Have been doing a fun song and dance getting my 27 replaced (I've been through two units) because they've shipped with dead pixels and/or a hair/fiber under the glass, which is unacceptable imo for such an expensive unit. Fortunately their customer service and return/replacement policies are pretty good! I'd recommend them over buying from Wacom directly (who has furiously lovely customer service and apparently quality assurance).

Thanks, I'm definitely on the B&H mailing list for when they get back in stock; I've heard nothing but good about them for years and years now. poo poo, sorry to hear about having to replace 2 units now, but I agree that you shouldn't accept such problems with them.

Any recommendations for screen protectors for a Cintiq? I really like using the felt tips on the stylus but I've heard multiple people say it eventually scratches the screen to poo poo

I got the antiglare one from Nushield. Pretty durable and no real problems. The adhesive is only on the outer edge so you dont have to worry about placement fuckups. If you gently caress up though you might get a tiny corner that's permanently dogeared, but otherwise still usable.

Just like that.

Thanks man. :)

Maybe a long shot, but does anyone have access to Wacom repair manuals? I have a Cintiq 22HD and its fine, but one of the ratchets of the stand has gone wonky and I'd like to have some guidance on repairing it instead of sending it to Wacom.

I've also been swapping out a ton of nibs recently just to get a good feel for all of them, so maybe I hosed something up trying to put one in?

I'm not sure if this is the best thread for this but I didn't get an answer in the laptop thread.

I need a mobile device of some type that is comfortable to write on for extended periods of time (I'm writing a book).

I'm also very interested in illustrating again, even in some of the more basic programs.

Are there tablets that are pretty okay to draw on and also have a cover keyboard or something similar that is easy to type on.
It would also need to be able to run the Microsoft Office suite.
OR is there a laptop with a touch screen that is good enough to do sketches with that won't make me cry from lag?

I keep looking at the Surface but it's probably WAY stronger than I need and I don't know how comfortable it is to type on.

Get a current gen iPad that can use the Apple Pencil and a good keyboard case. MS even has office apps for it.

Apparently the default amount of Undos in CSP for iPad is set at 200, so turning that down to a more reasonable number is supposed to free up the amount of memory that it takes and could probably cause slowdown.

I’m also on a first gen iPad Pro, not sure how much the cpu or ram improved in the more recent model

I’m also on the 1st gen Pro and I plan to upgrade next year when they upgrade to (hopefully) a borderless model.

Follow up to my iPad Pro question (thanks for the responses by the way), anyone used Astropad (or something similar), for using it as a tablet on a Mac? How well does it work?

Due to unexpected circumstances, I may be in the market to receive a stupidly expensive laptop, so I'm wondering about getting a MacBook Pro too and using them together like that. I vaguely recall some mixed responses to Astropad in this thread a couple of years back, but I might be misremembering/ hopefully the thing's improved in the interim.

Also, any thoughts on carrying a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro around everywhere at the same time? It looks like it's like 6lb, is this a stupid idea? Will I lose a lot by getting the smaller model of iPad? I should probably go to an Apple store to figure some of this stuff out myself, but if anyone has experience with this I'm really curious.

I did this using Clip Studio, Astropad, my MacBook Pro and my iPad Pro 12". It worked well but the screen is a liiiitle bit cramped. I tried it with Photoshop as well and it works fine, but I was mostly doing it via USB cord as opposed to wirelessly (that really depends on how good your wifi is). Astropad works really well, but it's not perfect. Sometimes you'll have very specific things that just won't really work (CSP has the deal where if you click on then hold shift and then click again with your pen, you get the straight line, which never worked worth a poo poo in Astropad). I even contributed to the Kickstarter on the new Astropad hardware/software thing that's coming soon, but Celsys stole all of it's thunder by just releasing CSP on the iPad.

It works, but it depends on what exactly you are going to be using. And yes, it's clunky to carry around both the iPad and MBP. I personally say still get the larger iPad because more space for drawing is better, at least for me.

Edit:

Anyone have any experience with refurb Wacoms?

I bought a refurbished 27QHD from B&H photo and it worked absolutely fine, until 13 months later when it simply died with zero warning or reason that I could figure. I'm really, really glad I purchased the extended warranty along with it. In the end I loved it and got 13 months of use out of it for the final cost of $250 or something (the cost of the warranty) as the service dept. deemed the unit unrepairable and refunded me the full cost of the unit. Luckily I didn't get rid of my old 22HD which is still chugging along.

Try checking out the Frenden brushes with CSP before you jump ship to Photoshop. Using PS to paint is still an act of tricking a program to do things it wasn't actually built to do.

For tutorials, Reuben Lara has some good ones that are CSP based.

Yeah CSP on the iPad loving owns. I admit though that I prefer to use it on my MBP and old 22" Cintiq because I like to have lots of space, but the 12.9" iPad can be carried anywhere so it wins in the long run for sure.

Also I can't complain about CSP's subscription price really because $25/year is absolutely reasonable for all it does in the big picture.
