Actually in Gagetown all the females are now quartered in the cushy new hotel style shacks. I'm talking 2-person rooms with individual bathrooms, showers and microwaves.

The shackrats in the D-lines were civilian skanks that slept with soldiers in exchange for being allowed to live secretly in the shacks. And now I feel bad for calling them skanks because they were all probably homeless. Still, the homeless shelters in Fredricton cant be that bad right? Right?

I'm nervous to actually start basic but more excited than anything. Just spent the last few days fishing and today and tomorrow I'm gonna have to hustle to get my stuff together.

Some quick tips:

-Shave and brush your teeth before you go to sleep, it will save you a lot of hassle in the morning when you're in a rush to shower after PT and prepare for inspection.

-You only need to undo the top 2 buttons of your tunic to pull it on and off like a shirt, dont be the retard who spends the time to unbutton and button the whole thing back up.

This is more for SQ as opposed to BMQ, but is of critical importance:

-Get gortex socks, they are loving amazing.

-ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keep your sleeping bag in your waterproof bivy bag. Trust me on this, a wet sleeping bag is the worst thing on the planet.

e: Oh, and another thing: Do your safety precautions and function tests diligently, the instructors sometimes like to sneak dummy rounds into your rifles, and you will usually get really beat up weapons, that may not be working properly (I had one with a busted safety)

I don't know the specifics with your buddy, but he either got out completely and then came back in as an officer (in which case you probably would start at basic 2LT-DEO pay), or got majorly hosed over. That is NOT the way its supposed to work. All of the UTPNCM's I went to RMC with were getting payed at their old pay rates (MCpl, MS, Cpl etc), despite being Officer Cadets. It just makes sense, as you cannot support a family on Officer Cadet pay. The same applies if you are going directly to 2LT.

I'm not sure how the reserves handles all this as they tend to do things a little weird, but it should be the same as the reg force.

Could be a reserves thing, could be an army thing, could be she just got hosed over.

I do have another buddy who commissioned from MCpl and got to keep his salary while an OCdt, but he's going through the pharmacy officer program, so I'm not sure the same rules apply, since he was practically getting free blowjob offers from personnel selection to make sure he commits.

You do have to fully clear out though and give back all your kit, which is a pain in the rear end I was hoping to avoid.

If you are really worried about physical load, just be sure to start conditioning your body ahead of time. Running and cardio would be the most important things. For reference, I've already sent an application and been called back asking me to show up at a recruitment center with school grades, references, etc.

Reserves are great while being in school. Reserve regiments usually parade one night a week and have weekend exercises twice a month (although this can vary throughout the year) so lots of chances to make some money. I believe the current requirement is for you to show up to at least one parade night and one exercise a month, but this can vary by regiment (mine was more strict and demanded higher attendance, but its good money so why not). During the summers there are usually lots of training and other postings available for months at a time which is where you can make some serious cash.

Does it depend on the Unit? i.e Princess Patricia's Light Infantry vs some random Logistics Group?

Well, even at my armored regiment 10-15km morning runs were common (around 8 miles give or take a bit), interchanged with ruck-marches of slightly shorter duration and of course interval training.

As for cock (ridiculous punishments) the worst I've see was taking all the furniture out of a barracks room and arranging it the same way outside (back and forth until the instructors got bored). The worst I had to go through myself was taking mod-tents up and down for about 8 hours straight.

Also, when it gets really cold work the action of your weapon at least a few times an hour, it can and will freeze solid otherwise and wont work. I'm a fairly smart, but officially uneducated guy (dropped out around grade 9 due to serious depression issues - a stupid decision and a long story) and one of the big pushes for me to go back to school is to finish my Grade 12 and apply for Navy or Air Force and I was just wondering if life in the Canadian military is as reviled as it is in the US military. Do you guys feel like the amount of effort you put into military life is worth the payoff? How often do Canadian infantrymen get deployed into hostile situations? If I'm more interested in the technical jobs/not getting my balls shot off, should I not even consider regular Army? I'm fairly ignorant about the whole thing, but life for me is not going well and I need some serious structure and rear end-kicking to get myself in gear and the military looks like a good way to do that. I just don't want to end up counting the minutes until my contract is up, so I'd like to hear from some experienced guys about what it's like.

For the record, I'm 21.

Everything acumen posted is very true and applies to every trade I've seen so far, not just infantry.

Also, keep in mind that if you just sign up right after you finish grade 12 you will start as a private with poo poo pay. A better way would be to talk to a recruiting center and find out what technical jobs are in demand, then try to get accepted into a college or university for that type of profession. The army will pay for your tuition and most likely offer you a rank and pay incentive when you finish school and are ready to serve. A friend of mine did that for optics/electronic technician and he got offered an automatic promotion to corporal with specialist II pay, which is pretty good.

Another option would be to get into university and go for the regular officer training plan (ROTP). Which is basically the same thing except you go in as an officer and you can be slotted into a number of different trades.

In either case you would owe the army 2 months of service for every month they sponsor you at university/college, but the pay and rank advantages over just signing up as an untrained private are enormous.

Edit: Oh yeah, and to the end of getting into good university programs put considerable effort into high-school, take useful courses (math, sciences, etc.) and don't slack off.

It's also a question of maintaining capabilities and participating in the communities that operate that equipment.

For example, getting a new submarine class will be exceedingly difficult and expensive without an established expert submarine community. If we scrapped the Victoria class but decided ten years later that we need boats again, we'd basically have to start from scratch developing the infrastructure, training people (it takes a long time to produce a quality submariner, especially at the higher levels) and procuring the equipment, and we'd be reliant on other countries to do so.

Without submarines we'd also be out of the community of submarine-operating countries and would miss out on decisions that may be made that can affect our maritime sovereignty. As mentioned before, that's pretty untenable for a country with the longest coastline in the world.

To elaborate on what Spirit Otter said, it's a terrible idea not just because the army sucks, but also because with Afghanistan winding down/done we just aren't getting the kind of money we were before. So the budget to do cool poo poo is smaller, which means more of the poo poo we do is gay. In addition, they're cutting allowances and that sort of thing all over. Besides that, our most important tasks have become poo poo like sov ops. (Which, if you're not familiar, is to go to the arctic circle and do some stupid army poo poo just to remind Greenland that we own it.)

Will there still be cool poo poo? Yes. I mean, just look a couple posts up at Samu. (Also, Samu, congrats as gently caress, and I'm glad as poo poo that you're enthused.
