So a couple of years ago, not long before the pandemic began, I submitted a request for an NDI 75 and was informed when I applied that the processing time might be long. The pandemic occurred, everyone wound up working from home and the world was turned on its ear so the card never did arrive. No harm, no foul as far as I am concerned because of how chaotic things became at that point. Thanks to Jobbo, I got in touch with the folks that process the requests and within about 36 hours I got an email confirming that my new card had been printed and would be off in the next mail run. I don't think I've ever had faster service from any other government ID request.

E crown 29 is an inspection mark, not a unit mark. What you've identified as a stand number is probably a regimental number. It is common practice for folks who get all freaky at the thought of paperwork like Germans to stamp serial numbers all over every single part of a firearm, but this is the British gun trade of the 1860s we are talking about here. We're lucky if they made the screws to the same standard.

E: Seriously. Standardization of parts for small arms did not reach Britain until something like the third model of P1853 Enfield.

E: It's still what, 20 years after the Americans introduced the concept into their own arsenals?

E2: And it's debatable as to whether or not Lee Enfields are truly parts interchangeable given the variable dimension bolt heads and the magazines hand fitted to individual rifles. (Though as I understand it the bolt head issue was due to a desire to provide as much tolerance as possible for ammo variations as .303 headspaces off the rim and indicates issues with standardization in a whole different section of British war industry)

The Snider Enfield was also finally withdrawn from active service in the Militia in 1905,* demonstrating that if ever there was a real tradition for Canada's military, it is fighting tomorrow's battles with yesterday's kit.

*Fun fact: divesting the various militia units of Sniders took years-- there were still 1853 Enfields on the books in quantity for some of them into the 20th century-- and as a result you will see Snider Enfields used as drill rifles during the Great War.

Which loving sucks, I was briefly in a platoon full of that kind of thinking.

also lol @ not having any idea what Gagetown is or how hard it would be when I signed up, oh how naive I was.

Some of the most important lessons I learned from the CF included the importance of listening carefully to the NCMs when they offered feedback and even if I disagreed to make sure that they knew what they were bringing forward was appreciated and considered carefully. They represent a tremendous knowledge and skill resource for an officer and this is very often missed by very young shitheads halfway through a degree and with dreams of a commission. Some of the best officers I worked with helped teach me these lessons (in addition to some very wise and patient CPOs) and some of them were former NCMs themselves. There is a wider lesson there too that I took away and that is that intelligence manifests in a lot of different ways and knowing that has served me very well.

As for Gagetown... if you are going to be there in the summer, always have potent bug spray close to hand. Much of the base is swampy and the wide grass expanses all around it are breeding grounds for biblical numbers of mosquitoes. Oh and enjoy the frequent summer thunderstorms too.

Social work requires a degree in that field from an accredited university-- generally a BSW or an MSW. The tendency these days is to require an MSW and it's certainly easier to pursue a clinical certification with an MSW. Either degree will require a couple of field placements and these are where the real learning takes place so it pays to put some effort into getting a good one. With a prior 4 year degree, a BSW is two years. With a BSW complete, an MSW is one year or two without it. After you've graduated you've then got to get registered with your provincial college or association. This can take several weeks to three or more months depending on how involved the provincial standard is... in BC we have to sit an exam as a part of the process. Generally, nobody will look at you without a complete and active registration.

You'll find social workers in provincial child protection units, family service units, providing case management for the elderly or for persons with disabilities. We're also the primary providers of therapy and counselling in the US and Canada and you'll find us in victims service units in a lot of police departments... though the nature of those units depends a lot on the parent department. When I worked in Fredericton, it was a volunteer thing but in Vancouver it is far more organized, paid and unionized too (did you know the Teamsters also represent the Helping professions like social workers? Next time some anthropologist tries to help you, ask to see his registration and tell him "No scabs!"). Applying for job with a PD is much like any other, except you can expect a very, very in depth security check with a larger department.

All kidding about anthropology scabs aside, social work is kinda like nursing in that there are a LOT of different things you can do in that field. I've delivered addictions treatment in a frontier setting in Alaska, in person crisis support in Vancouver during a pandemic and toxic drug crisis, worked with at risk kids in a residential setting, done conflict resolution facilitation and now I lead a team of mental health care professionals in a clinical setting. I joke a bit about being the person you never want to see, but if you need me you'll be glad I'm there but it's not really that much of a joke come to think of it. It's also like nursing in that the people that do it are crucial but rarely treated accordingly and the work can be tremendously challenging. But with that said I also suspect that last bit has more than a few people in this thread nodding along even though they put up a more cavalier front.
