I love Baseball Mogul. And probably my favorite: Second best winning percentage all time. Never lost more than 10 games a season. He also is the all-time leader in GB%.

Hi, my name is Harlock and I run the Oakland A's in Toona's OOTP11 league (which you should totally join if you're interested). I operate them with a low payroll in mind (not that I need to) and turn over my bullpen pretty much every year/other year. I have yet to give a player over 10m (per year) in the 7 seasons since I took over. This presents a bit of a problem because my ace SP is hitting Free Agency: http://www.toonathecat.net/scmlb/news/html/players/player_22798.html 2 CY Youngs and a Perfect Game under his belt while playing for my A's in addtion to one elite postseason where we reached Game 6 of he ALCS. He also had a string of 19 starts with either a win or no decision, I think it was 14 wins. I wish this would be the real Matusz because he's brought me so much success. OOTP experts, do I resign him for a 5 year deal at 13m/y at the age of 31? Most players die around 34, and his ratings have been in flux from all 8's to 7's depending on the sims. Oh and here's some pretty crazy splits on players that I drafted: http://www.toonathecat.net/scmlb/news/html/players/player_26394.html (former Montero level catcher - 28% of runners thrown out) http://www.toonathecat.net/scmlb/news/html/players/player_27396.html

Retail Slave posted:I've never once played in any sort of OOTP league. How demanding are they, time-wise? And how difficult are they to maintain and join? Obviously all leagues are different, but I found that was a good pace. You may need to pay more attention during the draft (if your league does a live draft) and during free agency, but it never really is a time sink. Unless you're like me and meticulously scout players, their advanced statistics, and the general makeup of the league. I enjoy pouring over our stat sheets to either find diamond in the rough free agents or to smartly spend my money. I've been in the bottom 10 for payroll my entire career in the above mentioned league, but always one of the better teams. There's a guy who made 1 or 2 updates all season and his team still won 90 some games. It's all a matter of personal preference.

For relief pitchers, I try to focus on K/9, which means how many people they'll strike out per nine innings. Other than that, I suppose it all depends on how my team is set up. I try to get guys with a high groundball percentage if I have good infielders, and guys with low groundball percentage if I have great outfielders. I'm not sure if this stat makes any difference, but I've made that choice in my head. Setup pitchers are usually used in the 7th/8th inning before the closer. Middle relief can pitch sort of anywhere from the 1st to the 9th. They usually pitch 5-7 depending on when your pitcher gets knocked out.

Roster construction will obviously differ depending on what league you're in and how you want to build your team. If you want to platoon players (i.e. only start them against the handedness they're good against), you might need to carry more people at a certain position. Typically, I think a roster of:code:

I'd almost never put him in a vs LHP lineup.

Veterans really get a raw deal in OOTP13. Even if I set the AI to favor veterans, there's always a decent crop of players who are above average or even elite on the free agent market. Short of manually signing them to random teams, it's a bummer to always see good players languish. On the other side of things, I wish I could set an age where people absolutely won't retire before. Cliff Lee was a 9/9/8 pitcher and retired at age 37, of course I didn't really notice until 2-3 years after he retired and felt it would be dumb to take him out of retirement then.

In OOTP11/13 I had a Third Baseman's defensive skills erode so badly he went from an 7 to a 0 in the position after his age 32 season. It was awful. http://www.rujasu.net/scmlb/news/html/players/player_32771.html I really hope OOTP14 fixes draft classes/amateur players. The automatically generated draft classes are so bad. I think there's some stuff in the changes for 14 that should help fix this with feeder leagues/international/etc.

OOTP has some neat new additions. You can now set your bullpen up with roles and when each pitcher should be used. I think the roles are: Middle Relief, Long Relief, Setup, Closer, Specialist. And then you can identify even further with 'Use after 6th/7th/8th inning' or 'Lefty/Righty specialist' On the offense side of things, you can also set priority for pinch hitters/pinch runners. It's worked out so far in the time I've simulated. One thing I'm still unsure about is the new 'talent generation system.' Draft classes still seem to be on the poor side, while the inclusion of International League FAs/IFAs generate really poor talent.

I signed Brian Wilson to a contract to a 2 year deal and it played out just fine in the end of year one. During Spring Training in year 2, I got a "Brian Wilson is in the best shape of his life" news event. The development report that came out showed that he had a stat boost which accompanied it. He basically got bumped another level up in Stuff/Movement/Control and even added some MPH to his fastball. It was really neat/awesome. Another event email I got was that Buck Showalter opened his own brewery called Buck's Beer or something goofy like that. It made me laugh. As an aside, I won the World Series in my second year with the Astros and got the "Moneyball" achievement, which I guess means winning the World Series with the lowest payroll. We rode Lucas Harrell's 3/4/7 (out of 10) stat line to a 5.6 WAR in the regular season, and he threw 3 CG (1 SHO) in the post season. This year is really weird when it comes to ratings. People with 5-6s (out of 10) seem to perform better than they did in the past when you consider that to be league average talent. Bryce Harper also hits 34 home runs before the All Star Break as a 10 power. Harlock fucked around with this message at 20:58 on Apr 23, 2013 |

I think people on the OOTP boards have researched it a bunch, you can read one related thread here. I usually strive to get guys who have a high work ethic/high intelligence. They seem to pan out more as prospects and have room for growth. This may just be a bias though.

To anyone who wants to join an online OOTP 14 league, we got spots! This league has been going on since 2010 and we are currently in our 13th season! It doesn't take much effort on your part, just own OOTP14 and do an export 3 times a week. Usually Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday. Put as much or as little effort in as you like! Inquire within: http://simcentral.net/forums/forumdisplay.php/245-SimCentral-MLB If you have any questions about the league, IcePhoenix, Tadashi, and I are all members in it. There may be more SA regulars, but the names escape me.

How do you guys compensate for seemingly random talent change with the default settings? I turn down batter/pitcher rating decline from 1 to something like .70-.80, which seems to be okay in stabilizing their stats and whatnot. I play with no scout/no coaching so it should be real values all the time. Jose Abreu in his first MLB season hit 38 HR/120 RBI, with a .280/.340/.600 slash line. His ratings pre-2014 (scale 1-10) were like 7/7/9/5/4. At the end of the season, they ended up being 6/6/7/5/3. Shouldn't his good performance have stabilized his ratings or was he hit by the ratings randomness stick? How do you guys feel about stats dictating ratings in the options? (Isn't there an option for that to recalc based off real stats?) How do you get the most accurate ratings based off stats/least amount of randomness. I like random talent changes for prospects, but can be somewhat annoying with ML guys. I've noticed this a lot more since OOTP11. Young players have a hard time remaining stable over 3-5 years. The talent randomness seems to hit younger players first.

I have so many OOTP games, I don't know where to start that question. Usually I play as my favorite team the first time for 5-10 seasons then start a new league. At that time I pick terrible teams and abuse the trade AI to make them better. It mostly works. Only one time have I done the same franchise for 30~ years. I don't know what happened with my OOTP settings, but I (and the league) had great draft classes and rookies who actually developed and got better. This was with OOTP13? I believe. Nowadays, the ratings seem like they fluctuate so much it's hard to actually evaluate players. Guy is a 26 year old 4 star LF who has a .300/.400/.500 season and then somehow the next season he's 2 1/2 stars at age 27 with the same ratings who now hits .240/.330/.375 Probably some settings I have to play with, but have been finding that OOTP feels less geared towards long term plays versus quick 1-5 season bursts.
