Romanians have some great options to kill tanks. Going through the front armour is a bit pointless vs the German big cats.

Have a look at the infantry options. Pioneers at tank assault 4 with panzerfaust command is a great option. Even the basic motorized infantry with a panzerfaust is a great defensive platoon.

You also have access to 100mm and 150mm artillery. They are dirt cheap.

But most of all learn embrace the R2 tank. Because running Panzer 35(t)'s late war is super cool.

They have some separate guns via their online store.

Try emailing: customerservice@battlefront.co.nz
Info they require can be found: http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=384

The Soviet T34 got a huge boost under the new V3 rules. My recommendation is to find out what the people at the local store or gaming venue play as an era.

A 1943 T34 list looks very different to a 1944 T34 list.

For mid war 1942-1943 the book you want a look at is Eastern Front.
For late war 1944-1945 the current book is Red Bear.

Once you have decided on an era that will determine if you can use the T34/85 or run the T34/76. Then pick up some tanks and what ever support unit you like. Start small in points till you work out your play style.

Here is a sample army:

Guards Tank Battallion: PG 66 Red bear
Confident Trained

HQ (1xT34/85) 80
Gvardeyskiy Tankovy Company (5xT34/85) 390
Gvardeyskiy Tankovy Company (5xT34/85) 390
Spetnaz (1 Squad) 100

960

Gives you the core of a T34/85 company. The Spetnaz are recon troops but are also SMG troops and are rated Fearless Veteran. They scout out likely ambush points and can be used to assault AT gun platoons which would chew up your T34/85s in defensive fire.

I would then see how you like the force. Common items to bulk out the list:
More T34/85s. Two Companies of 8 is typical.
Air support (they can pin infantry and gun teams, act as an AA unit and crack high armour tanks with their rockets).
AT units. There are several good high AT units. SU-100s are an option, IS2s are an option if you like big tanks so are sappers if you like some more infantry. It all depends on what models you like and what playstyle suits.

To save on models to buy you can increase your Morale to Fearless. You have the Auto attack rule so you get to learn how to but the pressure on and take objectives to win.

Not entirely true. Jumbos lead the way is a "may allocate" so its entirely optional.

So in that example you would not use it and take the MG hit on the non Jumbo leaving the cannon hit to go on the Jumbo as intended.

You would only get a benefit if some targets were within 16" and other outside of 16". However there are other more easier ways to get around the Jumbo rule like you can only hit targets in your field of fire. So moving a tank to block off the jumbo while you shoot at the non Jumbos is easier.

Both are abusive. Robert T is known in the wargaming community in NZ. He isn't the most pleasant person to play against and isn't typical of people in the hobby.

Sorry to disagree with with you but Tournaments are a great chance to play heaps of games in a short amount of time with like minded individuals. They are a great chance to show off your latest painted model and have a good time playing a game.

Here is a quick review of Battlefronts new line of 15mm buildings. These are from their battlefield in a box range. I have subscribed to their 12 month deal where they send me a different building each month. Battlefront underestimated the demand so I was lucky to get subscribed.

The buildings are very similar, most are modifications on the basic structure so I will just do a general review and you can look at the pictures on the Flames of War website if you want to check out the look of the next 10 buildings.

The buildings are made from a dense resin. Its heavy and solid so it is not as brittle and prone to breaking as the earlier Eastern front buildings set.
Each building comes in 3 parts. The ground floor, 2nd floor and the roof. The details are moulded on but the windows are solid resin. However I wouldn’t recommend drilling them out due density of the material and chance of snapping the resin.

Each floor and roof has a grove so they lock in place. The also provides stability and the roof can go on the ground floor to make a single storey house or a 3rd storey added from another set.
Inside there is enough space for a Battlefront large base which equates to 2 medium bases or 4 small bases.

The paint job is acceptable. These have been mass produced and it shows. The colours used are generic and can easily be touched up. From a distance the basic paint job is fine.

What I really like about this product is its perfect to game with. The buildings are usable straight out of the box. They are heavy enough so they will not get bumped around while you are playing. The buildings come apart allowing your models to occupy positions in the building. The colours are neutral and will fit into most European tables from France to Holland.

Over weekend a bunch of NZ wargamers decided to refight Borodino. Every regiment who took part is represented. With over 4500 infantry, 1000 cav and 160 gun models it was extremely impressive.
We used Blackpowder and everything flowed nicely. We even got a result!
I commanded the centre right an Davout I Corp with 3 infantry divisions, the corp cav and artillery. Most of the photos are from my attacks to take the fleches.
At first my corp took a while to get into place. Then with a corp order of “Storm the Fleches!” and a few good command rolls saw the entire corp get stuck and overran the left gun position.
It was an epic battle as the fleches changed hands 8 times become it became clear the Russian infantry were expended but their Cavalry and guns formed up behind the fleches preventing any further advancement.
I called in support from II Resever Cav corp, with 2 bridges of Cuirassiers and 1 light cav brigade. Napoleon himself released a division of young guard to ensure the Russian centre broke.
We such fine troops I pushed forward breaking several divisions and causing Bagrations 2nd Western army to break. Dispatches from my right confirm that the Poles with aid from Junots corp of 2 divisions secured the road.
News from my left was also good as the forces there claim the great redoubt.
On our far left things were not so well. The Russian cavalry crushed an entire French corp and shattered several neighbouring divisions before Napoleon order the artillery reserve to halt the advance.

All in all a great result. The best thing was combining 20 wargamers from throughout in one huge game.
Sorry for the picture quality I spent most of my time fighting hard the fleches and only briefly had time to take pictures from the left flank.

[Edit] Looks like Chris Packer has taken some video. First part has been uploaded to youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nglNHTaYJU

My GHQ order has arrived. I am reasonably happy with the result. However I should of cleaned up the model a bit better. Most of the tanks have a huge mold line through the side of the tank. To remove it I would have to run a knife down the side almost guaranteeing loss of the rivet details.

My Chieftains are painted in the Berlin Brigade Camo scheme. Its a urban camo based on the old WWI era Dazzle scheme. Its designed to break up the tanks lines so at distance it won't be recognized quickly as a tank.

As normal I only have my cheap point and shoot. Lighting is poor and enlarging 6mm figures isn't the best idea.

I have spent the last 8 days assembling and painting an entire Romanian army for Flames of War. Next weekend is Winterfest a 1750pt LW comp which is themed Axis vs Allies on the Eastern front.

Due to more Axis than Allied I switched sides like a true Romanian and themed my force to when the Romanians had surrendered to the Soviets and were fighting with them against Germany and Hungary.

First up is the HQ elements, 2x Panzerschrecks, 2x 60mm Mortars. Also a Sniper where normally they cannot take but I get free due to the competitions special rules. Note I messed up in identifying what was in the box. The 2IC and CnC are actually Kommissar figures not Romanian officers as I had first thought. Too late to change.

Next up is 1st and 2nd Platoon. These are MG teams with a Panzerfaust SMG team as a command team.

HMGs are next, these will most likely we combat attached to the infantry platoons.

Now on to the awesome Schneider 47mm AT gun.

Now for the big boys. Romanian built 75mm Resita TAC 43 gun. These should scare those big cats!

For artillery support we have the 100mm Skoda guns.

To back them up we have the 150mm Skoda guns.

For Soviet support with have a unit of T34/85.

Last two weeks I have been painting ACW 28mm troops. Next year the guys down in Christchurch are putting on a Gettysburg refight. I decided to field Sickles 3rd Corp.

They are using Fire and Fury as the rule set. Not my favourite rules to use for a large scale engagement but it was their choice as hosts.

They are using the 15mm organisation but with 28mm figures. The flags are just temporary till I get the rest of the units finished and do a proper flag order when I know how much I need.

Fire and Fury make up a Brigade with a certain amount of bases. This I am sure makes sense some where but for a 10 base unit in general would be be made up of 5 regiments. That is a flag every 2nd base which looks odd.

So I have decided to have 1 flag in 3, so every 3 bases = regiment which looks better but means I only have 3 regiments out of 5 represented.

Enough talking here are the pics:

Unintended Consequences of multiple changes in the Soviet national rules, Battlefront not listening to play testers, and V3's assault rules (some of biggest changes from V2 to V3 were in the assault rules) and battlefront publishing lists for operations later in the way than they had previous published.

Infact, when doing direct comparisons to American tanks (Sherman and Stuarts) it was found that Soviet versions cost the same, but didn't get free AA machine guns and stabilizers!!! How did this poo poo get through play-testing???

All the playtesters are under NDA about what goes on during the playtest process, myself included. So it is a bit unfair to blame a group or groups of people who are not allowed to defend themselves.

Any differences in opinion should be directed to the writer or editor as they would have the final say.

Numlock posted:

A smart opponent will keep you at long range (where he only needs a 5+ to hit assuming your tanks are also in concealment) for as long as possible and force you to keep moving, denying you shots or keeping your to hit roll at a 6 (at short range), while he's hitting you on 4's!!!

The sum of this is that what was intended to be a neutral change in the balance for soviets has resulted in their armor taking a heavy nerf. This has moved it well out of the range of what's considered competitive.

True but behind the scenes there are a lot of things factored in the points cost of soviet tanks. The bulk discount is huge and the side armour of the T34 also increases the points with little game difference. The new hen and chicks does not effect the ROF of MGs on that tank.

It is hard to fully judge the cost as the only books after V3 with the US 76mm Shermans only have the stats for the 76mm (late) which is a better gun than the 85mm on the T34.

At the lowest points and therefore no bulk discount 400pts gets you 5xT34/85. 415pts gets you 4xShermans with the 76mm late (if you could have all 4 with the 76mm upgrade). They are a better tank but the T34/85 has numbers.

Numlock posted:

Now Soviets in General are still good, Stelkovy is still nasty (nastier given the boost infantry in general have gotten from V3) Guards tanks (which don't get Hen and Chicks) and most Assault guns are still fine. T-34s do ok when used in non-tank forces since if you are playing defensively they don't have to move that much but they are still over costed.

So If I was starting soviets, I would avoid the Tankovy and look into the very good Mechinized lists the Soviets get, or go straight up Assualt Gun company.

Wait what? Soviets get plenty of HQ/combat attachable capable platoons and when attached they become part of that platoon for all purposes. I just checked the rulebook and I didn't see anything about AT rifle teams not counting as teams during an assault! How would that even work?

Soviet AT rifles increase the platoon size but QoQ is assaulting infantry teams. The soviet AT rifle is a gun team so does not count.

Good sources of cheapish terrain:
Get yourself a door mat without any writing on. Cut into rectangles of various sizes for cornfields.
Roads. I like Battlefront roads but cork tile cut to lengths with spackle filler spread on it makes passable rural roads.
Woodland scenics make a dense bag of green. Torn into sections and glued to strips of cork tile make good hedges.

What makes a good game of FoW is the right mix of open ground, Line of sight blocking terrain and concealing terrain.
